Thanks to the many TNFers who have helped with images to assist my research, I have now almost completed my collection of 1/43 models of cars raced, tested or demonstrated by Niki Lauda. Some are well known models that are widely available; most are adaptations or scratch builds by me. Modelling skills variable! I will post some images in themed sections but this may take some time - there are rather a lot....

I haven't attempted to morel every car from every race; there are just too many, but I have tried to model all the known structural variants and cars where liveries are significantly different enough to be interesting.

Hope you enjoy.

Starting with the first race, of course - Mini Cooper 1300S Bad Mullacken Hillclimb 15/4/1968

Hi Edward

Thanks for your kind comments.

The March 712Ms were indeed scratch built, using a Lotus 69 as a base (either Axel-R kit or Spark).

The Kaimann Mk3 FVee was built on a Matra F3 base I think, and the Mark 4 on an Alpine F Junior.

Kind regards.

Jon

That's the collection to date (having sorted out some of the previous fuzzy photos - sorry). There are a few work-in-progress items awaiting parts to finish, these being the BMW 2800 from the 1971 Spa 24 Hours; March 722 F2 from Pau, 1972; BMW 3.0 CSL practiced at the 1973 Nurburgring 1000 km; Brabham BT45C Le Castellet Test January 1978 and Brabham BT46/1 Kyalami Test February 1978. I will post these in the appropriate places when completed.

There are still a couple of omissions for which I am still unable to find any images that are stymying my "completist" tendencies, so if anyone can help with the following I would be very grateful indeed:

  • Porsche 902/2-008 Preis Der Martha 25/10/1970
  • BMW 2002 Innsbruck Group 1 30/9/1973

If anyone has some more robust source material for the Lauda/Hofer Mini from the 1968 Nurburgring 6 Hours or the Ford Capri RS2600 from 1973's Osterreichring End Of Season Trophy that would validate the completed models, I would love to hear from them.

Thanks for indulging me.

Excellent stuff. Very interesting to see all those 312B3/T/T2 test versions, many of which I was not aware of previously! Well done.

Very nice collection. Congratulations!

BMW M5 Nurburgring Renntaxi, July 1979 demonstration

I think you know your E28 M5 model is a E30 series 3. The year 1979 is definitely wrong. The first M5 was introduced in 1985. Niki started to work with BMW in 1986. So should be dated to that year.

Even the Camaro from the IROC Riverside race in 1978.

Fantastic work.

Didn't he miss a race ortwo following an accident on a ride-on lawnmower?  Should it be included?

It was a tractor wasn't it? Or was that a separate incident?

I'm probably not quite anal enough to have a go at the infamous tractor, though I am quite tempted to do the go kart he demonstrated somewhere in Eastern Europe a few years back. And I quite like the look of the fully-liveried Chevrolet Blazer he drove in the driver's parade at the Osterreichring in 1975  :stoned:

I have now built up the other variant of the Brabham BT48 that was used in first practice for the Spanish GP in 1979; I'll get round to photographing that shortly. Still waiting on the arrival of base models to have a go at the BMW 2800CS from Spa 24 hours 1971, the BMW 3.0 CSL practiced for the 1973 Nurburgring 1000 km and another F3 McNamara to be completed in the correct green livery for Brno in 1970. And maybe I might then look at the test livery versions of the Brabham BT45C and Brabham BT46 from 1978.....and there's still a couple of others I can't find pictures of anywhere!

The trouble with being a completist is you keep finding stuff that you hadn't thought about .....

Thanks for the words of encouragement guys.

I was joking about his lawnmower/tractor incident.  But on the question of tractors, did he take part in any of the celebrity tractor races between GP drivers at Brands Hatch?  If so that would be a valid subject for a model.
I don't think the tractor and trailer they paraded the Silverstone winner on counts, as he didn't drive it.

That's an interesting point about the Brands Hatch tractor races - I had forgotten about them. In fact, the only one I can recall seeing a photo of was from the 1972 event which was run before the Rothmans 50,000 Formula Libre race (there's a colour pic in "From Brands Hatch To Indianapolis"). Perhaps some of the TNFers may know how many such races there were, and who took part? Maybe I should post that question on the main forum.  :)

Great collection. Maybe some future additions: the Rolls Royce he owned in the 70s, the Ferrari 288 GTO gift, the Alfa Spyder Veloce (limited edition with Niki Lauda F1 decalling on the nose) and the Moon Car  from the movie "Die zukunft hat Geburtstag".

Thanks Arjan. I didn't know about the Lunar Rover demonstrated in the film - that looks pretty interesting!

I have a few of the "road cars" sorted already (and just for the sake of completeness, I'll post some photos of these separately). The 288 GTO is actually en route (and has been for a while, now!) but so far I have completed:

  • Fiat X1/9 Lusso Sportivo, 1976 (Lauda was persuaded to appear in the advertisments used to promote this whilst he was at Ferrari)
  • Alfa Romeo 1600 Giuletta 1978 (he appeared in a TV commercial alongside a small boy dreaming of owning one)
  • Alfa Romeo Spyder Veloce (as you describe)
  • Ferrari 458 Niki Lauda Edition (indirectly endorsed special edition)

I've thought about doing the Rolls Royce (pictured in "For the Record"), but the guy has had so many personal cars it starts to become a case of "where does it end?". I may, however, go with ones where there is a particular significance or where he has had some media or promotional involvement, such as:

  • Volkswagen Beetle drophead (the first car, the one he learned to drive in on the family estate)
  • Bentley S3 1966 (own car)
  • Ferrari 308 GTB 1976 (developed with his input and used in publicity shots at Fiorano)
  • Porsche 911/930 (own car 1978)
  • BMW M3 (road tested 1978)
  • Audi Quattro (publicity shots)
  • Mercedes-Benz S-class (tested at the Nurburgring on video)
  • Smart 2 Brabus (endorsed)
  • Smart city car 2003 (for his Vienna "Laudamotion" project)

There's also the Ski/Sled "Car" he demonstrated in tandem with Bernie Ecclestone at the Hannenkham in 2013.

As far as track vehicles go, I'm still trying to find out if he actually drove the following:

  • Lola T212 which he was down to drive in the 1972 Buenos Aires 1000 km for Ecurie Bonnier. He didn't race it but I wonder if he tried it out before?
  • Ferrari 312B3 with the full width nose, as tested by Regazzoni at Vallelunga in 1974?
  • Red Bull RB2 2006 - photos show him sitting helmet-less in the cockpit, with his name on the side, but did he ever drive it?

And then of course my remaining long standing quest to find a picture of the BMW 2002 he raced in the Prix von Tirol, Innsbruck in September 1973.

If anyone knows of others, I'd be delighted to hear about them or see images!

Are you going to move on to his aircraft?  Maybe the lightplanes pre-Lauda Air.

I'm too dizzy to care. For those of us with slow internet service all those photos means trying to open the thread or scroll to the end has the screen jumping all over the place for 2 or 3 minutes.

Sorry if the plethora of photos is causing you issues RS2000. I've tried to use the recommended route for posting.

As for whether the good Mr Lauda ia aware of my project, I couldn't say. In the past, he has been famously disinterested in memorabilia (witness his giving away of his trophies to a local garage in return for free car washes), though he has of late given a few more retrospective interviews and was of course a supporter of the "Rush" movie. If these models are of interest, you never know....

I hadn't given any thought to the aircraft, but the answer is probably not; tracking down enough source images would most likely preclude it.

I just wondered whether he would be able to help as well.  I know of one or two people who have made comebacks so that their kids can see them in action, perhaps Niki would want to show his grandkids that he was a Big Wheel...

What an amazing labour of love! Well done you.

The Ralt RT4 - is there a kit for that or did you scratch-build it too?

Maybe you should include the FIAT from 'Rush' - the on that picked up he and Marlene?

Thanks Bruce.

For the Formula Pacific Ralt, I used an F3 Ralt as the base, modified the bodywork and engine bay and added F2 wheels before the usual paint & decalling. Not so much conversion work needed on that one as with some others!

I've also added the Ferrari 305 GT4 BB (4.4-litre version) that he was doing bespoke tyre tests with at Fiorano in early 1976, with DSJ as his passenger among other journalists. Will photograph that one in due course.

Regards,

Jon
