Me and a couple of friends of mine will be in Monaco on Saturday 14.

I'm going to book the tickets for the "K" grandstand, I've seen that there are different parts of the K grandstand (numeral parts from K1 to K9).

I would like to know how these parts are located on the grandstand, because I can't find a map anywhere.

The best solution for me would be a seat where I can take professional photos (telephoto) without any obstacles in my view (doesn't matter the distance).

I really thank you in advance for your tips.

VALE.

I think that K1 is at the Tabac Corner end and K9 nearer to the swimming pool.

That's right. When I spectated at Monaco for Grand Prix, 81-83, I always sat in K2. If you want to take photos choose the higher rows to avoid looking through debris fencing.

Correct, Barry.

I think K1 fills (sells?) out quickly as you have a good view to the Chicane, Tabac in front, along to the Swimming Pool and St Devote behind you. I was able to move about K2 to K9 to take in different views and to sit at the top of the stand to watch the Start/Finish Straight

Enjoy!

Many thanks!

Hope to see the cars closely too at the paddok / boxes like in Monza.

Ciao.

For those of us not fortunte enough to be going to Monaco Historique in person, there will be extensive live coverage of both racing and qualifying on Motors TV. Last time, the UK commentary team (operating out of a bedroom in Northampton) did an excellent job, despite a delay of several seconds between the pictures and sound. I assume the races not being shown live will be broadcast later in the week.

There will also be highlights shown on Motors TV on Tuesday evening into the night., which is what I shall watch........as I am going there tomorrow.

I hope to see many TNFers there; I will be wearing a TNF badge somewhere, and I will be in the Casino Square stand B on Saturday and K7 on Sunday, and in the paddock Friday and Saturday evenings.

For Friday practise is it possible to walk around to different vantage points or stands?

To get around the circuit, Paul, you will need to go out of the immediate confines of the circuit, then you can work your way up to the top end but vantage points are limited and I'm not sure how many stands will be open although those that are are free. Be prepared for rain on Sunday. The weather is lovely here today and is supposed to be okay up to Saturday but I can't find any forecast that is not showing rain on Sunday.

I'm assuming from the comments above that coverage is not available online... (?)

I don't have a television.

It's claimed that live timing will be here https://acm.mc/en/gr...ue/live-timing/ although it doesn't seem to be working yet.

Results are slowly appearing here https://acm.mc/en/gr...resultats-2016/

But the results don't tell the whole story, do they?

The Scarab was going very hard, I felt. It really did look good. And there was a Team Lotus-coloured Lotus with a 4-cylinder engine which was being driven aggressively despite a terrible misfire.

And the 12-cylinder Ferrari 1500 (512?) looked and sounded really good.

I think John Ure's Cooper-Bristol is near the top of the sheet in the sports car session, but it'll be a while before it runs again after a big shunt before the chicane.

Also the pessimists were right.....I couldn't get into any of the paddocks.

Paul, I was able to get into the Paddocks each day after competitive action was over in previous years

I've told you before go down the stairs to the paddock restaurant, then just wander along the "cloister" as though you own the place and you are in the paddock

Paddock entrance was totally unrestricted up to 11.30. Then they cleared out the nobodies because cars would be moving around from shortly after that time.

I wasn't there early enough to get in before practise, and afterwards there were guards at every entrance and no clear way in from any steps, despite there being no cars moving. It definitely seems to be different this year.

Anyway I wandered around all day wearing my TNF badge and didn't see anyone. Does anyone want to set a rendezvous for today?

I saw a very slow Surtees blocking a bunch of cars and immediately thought Judy Lyons, but I dismissed it straight away thinking it is just someone in trouble and a lot of traffic, then I saw the result sheet.

Yes I was surprised to see she was allowed to be 'competing' at Monaco - though the commentator did say she was looking very hard at her rear view mirrors  :D

It's been great to watch this unfold on MotorsTV. Such a variety of classic cars; and the drivers aren't shy about driving them through the twisty streets of Monaco!

I have to say that it depends entirely upon which security person you happen upon, as they all interpret their instructions according to how they feel or how much they dislike you. Even with a media pass one is often prevented from taking the simple route to access an area and it may involve making a detour to find a more sympathetic gate guardian. Some of our party (without media passes) were prevented from taking a 30 metre path which was an access to a public area, but managed to skirt round the obstruction by approaching down some steps behind the offending official. Some are splendid and as friendly as one could ask, but, sadly, they are not universal

I'm back from Monaco,

is not a good place to take pictures of car on track.

But I've a shot with Sir Stirling Moss, a dream come true, I'm still crying of happiness.

(Don't know if possible to post the shot).

I was on k4 grandstand so I've seen Kubota destroy the front of the Lotus 72 at the Tabac corner.

Ciao.

Vale.

Have managed to see some good coverage today and yesterday.

So, whilst I've missed out on the paddock and the atmosphere, I've been able to follow some of the races quite well and the camera work has been fine - close-ups on the grid and suchlike, varied camera angles and wide shots.

Quite a lot of bent machinery though (but I guess that's inevitable - many cars of those eras would have been racing amidst such incidents in their heyday).

Ian Titchmarsh seems to have taken this afternoon off from the multi-lingual commentary though, which has tested my French beyond breaking point...

Hope those of you who are there are enjoying yourselves and have had at least as good a view of the races as I have! Some of the driving has been impressive and entertaining (with just a few wince-inducing near-misses). And of course, there are all those machines that we saw racing when they were new. Glorious.

Ouch. I saw an M23 had spun (and presumably hit, or been hit by, something) but didn't realise its dignity had been further sullied. That's rather sad; they don't crane them with a driver still aboard do they?

I was too busy dealing with the pain of my jaw hitting the ground to look closely enough! I'm wondering if something broke or became detached around the rollbar. We get used to seeing racing cars bouncing off barriers in accidents but this was quite different, in that the whole car landed on the ground and just sort of sagged - you'd have to see the incident to see what I mean...

There were no replays on the Monaco Channel live feed so I only saw it the once - I happened to glance at the screen just as car and crane parted company. In several other incidents over the weekend  I gritted my teeth as marshals seemed to be standing right underneath a car that was being craned away. I think there need to be some sensible H&S guidelines in this sort of incident.

A couple of points....

Who in their right mind thought that allowing 41, yes, 41 3 litre F.1 cars on the track at the same time, many driven by relative amateurs, was a smart idea?

Why was the pace car still on the track when the race had been green flagged?

And wasn't it wonderful to see Alex Caffi driving so beautifully and an ENSIGN winning at Monaco.

Pinch yourself..... the Maki started and ran very nicely, right to the finish.

Best of all, the rain stayed away.

Caffi's drive looked very 'polished' didn't it?

Is he Monagasque now? (re. flag at the presentation; avoiding the other 'p'word there - discussed elsewhere!). Or was that the entrant?

Interesting how less-promising cars come on when they've had time for measured sorting and development that perhaps wasn't possible when they were current .

Great weekend.  Highlights for me were Martin Stretton throwing the Scirocco-BRM around in practice and Tony Wood in the Lister-Bristol overtaking round the outside at La Rascasse - not that it's possible to overtake at Monaco of course.....

The event was covered live on France 3 this afternoon, with commentary by some ignorant Frenchwoman and Mauro Bianchi, who is approaching 80. I think he did not much appreciate her repeated references to the unfortunate Jules.

I agree entirely about Caffi's excellent drive and one or two others seemed to have the required (ie rather high) level of competence. But most of them were hopelessly out of their depth. Pirro was evidently under instructions to drive very gently indeed, yet he still finished fourth in the Ferrari F312.

I saw the crane incident 'live' and then a repeat, but it was not possible to determine clearly what happened - either something on the car broke or there was a failure of the crane equipment.

I have just watched France 3's regional evening news. It was announced that the race was won by "Max Caffi".

Maybe they thought two motorsports stories would be excessive for one edition.

Ian Titchmarsh seems to have taken this afternoon off from the multi-lingual

Ian was very much present in the commentary box at the circuit, as he has been for every day of the event since 1997. I don't imagine they use the circuit commentary on the TV feed, do they?

Ian was very much a part of one coverage source I saw on Saturday and Sunday - alternating with the other languages. I had assumed that he was present for the live comms and although not certain the nature of the sound suggested that the mic was picking up a slight ghosting of his voice from the pa (that was on the Monaco Channel online coverage). But Sunday afternoon he seemed absent from the feed and I didn't hear him in the background on the pa.

On an unrelated note, once their coverage came to an end, they reverted (just like most UK channels seem to do) to the new tv default of a cooking competition.

He is resident in Monaco and therefore has a Monaco competition licence (like I do). In all competition (apart from F1) it's the licence country that counts, not the nationality of the driver, which in Caffi's case is Italian. Anyhow it was a good excuse to play the Monaco national anthem (and probably the only time they did not play God Save the Queen!).

I agree with various comments about the driving standards in the last race - pretty appalling in general! It seems a lot of them only do one race a year, and perhaps doing it in Monaco is not the best place! And what happened to Caffi himself at the first rolling start? He muffed it completely and created a traffic jam going up the hill with a Tyrrell running into the back of the Amon and a red flag as a result!

Thanks for that. I undrstood the position re. licences but didn't know that Caffi was a Monaco resident.

I saw that incident on the warm-up lap but it wasn't evident on-screen what had precipitated it.

Yes, an unforgiving place for the occasional racer, especially with such a large field. Though if one had the wherewithal, the car and the opportunity, it must be a tough gig to turn down!

Caffi at the first rolling start had spotted the red flag before the others and was waving his arm coming out of Ste Devote where I was sitting to warn the others he was backing off. I can only guess the others behind him were unsighted to the marshalls post up the hill.
