Don Philp - one of the last 'links' of South African racing from the 1950s and early 1960s passed away a day or so ago. He was 92.
After being demobbed Don started racing in 1949 with a Singer Special.
He became one of South Africa's top drivers with his "Mighty Atom' - a red MG Special with bodywork resembling a Maserati 4CLT.
In late 1959 he graduated to a Cooper (T43) Climax and became a force to reckoned with in national championship events.
In South Africa's first post-war Grand Prix at East London in 1960 he finished an impressive 5th behind Paul Frere, Stirling Moss, Syd van der Vyver and Lucien Bianchi.
Don also raced sports cars and saloons with impressive results.
A 'gentleman' on and off the track after retiring from race driving he retained a keen interest in motor sport.
