Oh no, what a bad day this is turning out to be. Timo and John Whitmore were two of my favourites back in the '60s.

RIP Timo, and thanks for the memories.

Oh no. From Big Healeys to Escorts to much more besides - a true legend. To me, the very name = rallying.

God speed.

A legend of rallying. Victories included a hat trick on the RAC 1973-75.....he'd often led earlier RACs but various issues forced him out or stopped him winning....remember Timo in a Healey trying to climb a snowy hill whilst team mate & rival Rauno Aaltonen slithered past on his way to victory in a Cooper S on the '65 RAC.

Probably his greatest victory would be the 65 Monte, which he dominated with Paul Easter in a works Cooper S.

Sincere condolences to his family and friends

RIP Timo

A great, good spirited tribute by Markku Alen from a couple of years ago, honouring Timo's '67 Ouninpohja bonnet incident in particular.

I remember a quote from Timo, after he'd won an RAC rally sponsored by the Milk Marketing Board. He said he'd drunk milk, it slowed his reactions so he braked later. Nice sense of humour.
His driving of the Big Healey was splendid to watch, even if it was the wrong car by then.
RIP

This is very sad news indeed.

Didn't he race a saloon at Brands a few times? I seem to remember being there for one of those times and seeing this thing going more sideways than any other!

You did indeed, '64 Motor 6 hour ETC race won by Sir John Whitmore and Peter Proctor. Timo was driving a Mini 1300 "s". He drove the Don Moore Mini in other meetings that I attended also, a gifted driver.

Although Fred Gallagher referred to it in this earlier thread I hadn't really twigged that Timo once took part in an F2 race, the Finnish GP at Keimola on 24th August 1966. He drove a works Lotus 44 against the likes of Brabham and Hulme in the dominant Brabham-Hondas, Clark, Rindt, Bonnier and even Frank Williams, but unfortunately retired after one lap of the first heat with valve trouble.

1987 1000 Lakes. Timo on course car duty in a Volvo 240 Turbo Gp.A, with Atso Aho co-driving.

Obviously taken before his quick roll of the car.
