Oh well. You're a nicer bloke than your dad, but not good enough for current F1.

Wow...Carlos moving early, and Kvyat back in at STR?

Said it right after he won the GP2 championship. I have watched him many years in GP2 and he was never impressive. Just not good enough.

That means he know other seats are closed, took the money and plans to walk it off in a private island for a month or two...

Bizarre

Not really, no chance of seat at Williams, so he took nice money that may give him continuation of career in something like indycar

Wasn't Gasly supposed to go back to Formula Nippon to try to win a championship there with Kvyat coming back anyway?

Or is that plan scrapped?

If not, who will drive the second Toro Rosso in place of Sainz?

Aw. Classy way to go out. Hopefully that attitude and determination will grace another racing series in the near future.

And even starting near the back, driving an F1 car at Suzuka is what it's all about, isn't it?

Best of luck to Jolyon, if he's reading this.

I just mean bizarre in the way it has been announced. It seemed like he was going to see out the season. It's almost like he's had enough fighting for the right to race in only 5 more Grand Prix.

I too watched him for many years in GP2 and I found his championship-winning year very impressive. Palmer deserved his chance in F1. He also just about earned a second chance against an established driver. But he failed badly and was promptly replaced. If he can re-capture his GP2 form, he would be a deserving driver in another series.

It’s set up for Sainz to make the switch this season going by autosport’s report. I’d have liked him to see out the season, but he has generally been disappointing in his time in F1. I’m sure he’ll do well elsewhere though.

That was the general expectation after Gasly was only confirmed for Malaysia and Japan so far, but nothing official. Possibly the team didn't even make that decision back then, but with the new circumstances they don't really have a choice, and with Gasly himself saying he'd prefer to continue in F1 rather than fight for the SF title there's no problem.

That's the spirit. Gasly being able to gain experience in F1 seems to be of higher value to him, than a lower series title.

Rightly so. If you’ve got your foot in the door of F1, why step out again? The goal is driving in F1, and SF would be a means to that end. If you reached your goal early, you wouldn’t pass on the opportunity.

As to Palmer. May he find a series that suit him. F1 was above his skill set. Without his connections, he probably never would have made it into F1.

Well that was it for Jolyon, wish him all the best and a good seat in another series, F1 was just a notch above his level.

Very interesting. So who's next on the Red Bull conveyer belt to step in athe Toro Rosso?

Edit: Ah, I see. You have to wonder how Kvyat feels about all this. I bet he's seething.

If you were Sainz would you prefer to go up against the Hulk in a car he's been driving all season or want until next year?

It's like with Gasly. You take your time to settle in, so you can have a proper go next year as a better prepared driver.

It would be different if his future wasn't certain, but since he's already confirmed for the next year he doesn't have much to lose by moving right now.

Feel pretty indifferent about this, I don't think he was ever strong enough for the sport so unexpected. There aren't enough seats for drivers like Palmer, Massa, Raikkonen etc to still be around

There's nothing unusual about that. It's only an issue because he's not good enough. It doesn't matter for instance that Max Verstappen had the good fortune of being the son of an F1 driver.

STR: Kvyat and Gasly, can't say that's very exciting. Gasly was easily passed by Verstappen and Kvyat we know how it went. The RBR programm has seen better days and you can argue VES wasn't a real RB junior, he just accepted their offer to be in F1.

Nothing against him, I just don’t think he quite had the raw pace to make it in F1. I wish him all the best and I think he has enough talent to get a seat in another series with a decent team.

The BBC's article on qualifying today describes Palmer's performance thus; "two places and 0.143secs off team-mate Nico Hulkenberg, one of the Englishman's best performances of the season."

In those circumstances one cannot blame Renault for giving him an early bath.

I find your attitude towards Palmer immature and childish. Celebrating this sort of thing is a bit pathetic in my opinion.

Joke aside; I wish him well in the future and I'll be following him in whatever series he decides to be a part of.

A GP2 champion means a lot in my book.

It gives Red Bull another chance to ditch Kvyat so Verstappen can win another race.

It's a bit sad to be replaced mid season but it was expected. Palmer seems to be a good guy and I'm sure he'll do well in less demanding series in the world (but I don't think IndyCar is the right formula for him, maybe GTs?)

It's downright anti exciting. Not enough to be bumped, Honda that is, from McLaren to Toro Rosso, but you end up with a unexperienced and an never have been driver.

Indeed, even Leimer and Valsecchi have better racing CV's than Palmer and they never made it after becoming GP2 champ.

Palmer's racing career is laughable, but daddy made sure he got in touch with the right people.

I stand by that statement. There are several drivers I don't think are up to the standard taking up F1 seats, nothing to do with ricciardo or verstappen.

Or an IndyCar drive. 3-4 million USD would go quite a long way towards a good drive there (Ganassi, SPM).

You putting Palmer in the same category as Massa and Raikkonen is a valid statement? :p
