Now that all of the excitement around this season has already faded away, we have time for F1 related "dont take these too seroiusly" sidelines...

To celebrate 70 years of Ferrari, F1 Racing asked its readers and the online forum of FerrariChat to vote for the greatest Ferrari driver in history.

Michael was well earned winner of this poll with 50% of votes.

Kimi was clearly second with 12,4% of votes

Gilles with 10,3% of votes was the third best Ferrari driver ever.

Rest of the nominees led by Fangio did not get close to TOP three.

From current drivers Alonso and Vettel were 6th and 10th.

For me Michael was obvious winner for this type of "best Ferrari driver of all times" type of poll.

Kimi's success in this scale was some what unpredictable at least for me it was. But it shows that he has clearly melted the hearts of Ferrari fans.

Gilles is a true Ferrari legend and no surprise in Top3.

From active F1 drivers Alonso and Sebastian are way back behind Kimi...

I'm amazed that Jean Alesi didn't even make the top 10. He was wildly popular at the time. When it was announced that Schumacher was replacing him, there was a banner at Monza that said "1 Alesi today = 100 Schumachers tomorrow".

I can at least see an argument that Fangio was better than Ferrari so not really the greatest "Ferrari" driver ever, as opposed to the greatest driver who ever drove for Ferrari.  But Raikkonen over Ascari, Lauda, Surtees....Christ alive, this is one of those Apu banana bread moments.  I literally cannot find words adequate enough to express my contempt and derision for the open-mouth-breathing humanoids who came up with such monumentally galaxy-worth-of-****-compressed-into-a-housebrick-dense arsetwattery.

Someone put up a bootleg version of SkyF1's midweek show on youtube. Pinkham was the host with guests being Sir Partick Head and one of the regular guys featured by Sky - I cant remember his name now... He just put out a book about his time as pit mechanic for Macca.

Anyway the top comment was something like "why is the guy in the middle [mean Head] there? He's kinda boring."   ..... I was pretty confident that that would be the most clueless F1 related thing I would see this week. [We need a "shakes head" emoji]

I think he lucked in to a politically influenced WDC - and has been dogturd ever since.

Kimi the 2nd greatest Ferrari driver of all time... good grief. Despite him winning his WDC with Ferrari I'll always think he did his best work with McLaren.

Back in 1999 the Great British public voted Robbie Williams one of the 100 Greatest Britains of the millennium. Its best not to take these polls too seriously, they say more about the people who vote in them than anything.

Räikkönen obviously got a boost on account of being a current driver, as well as Ferrari's last/latest champion. Not to mention being one of F1's fan-favourites.

Fangio in relation to Ferrari might not be all that, but he's a big name as well. The others in the top five are pretty solid picks. Lauda and Villeneuve; hard to argue against these.

Isn't that the list that had Bono and Bob Geldof on it? Neither are British.

The public aren't the smartest bunch.

A shame that Ascari is so far down, but he is so far back in history that he doesn't resonate with people any more and unlike Fangio he is not quite a household legend name.

Who did this poll,  Ten year olds?

If anyone tries to do such a poll, then it should be done something like this:

(pre poll)

Experts pick a list of possible candidates

Q1. Which of these drivers have you heard of?

(from those selected in Q1)

Q2. Which do you think you know enough about to assess

(from those selected in Q2)

Q3. Please rank in order from best to worst

Then, by weighting according to how many people actually know enough about each driver to rate them, you can get a better understanding of their relative rankings. I have a feeling that this is not the kind of process that was adopted here, though.

Kimi fans giving Arsenal fans a run for their money when it comes to polls

Schumacher
Lauda
Ascari
Villeneuve

Are top 4 in whatever order. Anything else and I don't really agree.

I think Surtees would round out my top 5.

Next year I will write down a scientific papper on the absurd Kimi's popularity. I'm a communication teacher [and a massive kimi fan, of course] and that is a subject realy interesting.

Of course he's not the second best Ferrari driver but neither is Gilles the third.  Ferrari had the best names of the sport driving for them with little exeptions of Senna, Piquet, Clark, Hakkinen and Hamilton [yet]. So the thing is, are we evaluting the driver's Ferrari career or his overall career?

If it is the former, Schumacher, Lauda, Fangio, Ascari are the biggest achievers. . And then, drivers who did not win the championship but are clearly in the top class above some of the champions. like Prost, Mansell, Alonso, Vettel. Then you have drivers who won the championship like Scheckter and Kimi who deserve praise. Then Drivers with many podiuns wins and good perfomances like Barrichello, Massa, Alboreto, Berger, Alesi, Villeneuve, Irvine.

Kimi's and Gilles results, just show they are legendary. But it's more than driving skills: it's pure emotion.

I guess one would need to know the average age of the peeple who voted to make more sence of it.

I think when it comes to Kimi's placement in this pole he can only be compared against Alonso and Vettel. Personally I think with these three its about right Kimi is above both because when it comes to Ferrari, its more than just driving.

The less said about #2 (and perhaps even #3) on the list the better.

You have the recentness argument, but even accounting that Fangio at 5.4 and Ascari at 1.2 still confuses. Fangio may have been the slightly greater driver of the two overall - but JMF only did a year at Ferrari, Alberto took them from zero to world domination.

Phil Hill hasn't even gotten a shout on the thread yet which is absolutely criminal. WDC + three Le Mans wins for the Scuderia, on an era when it mattered a lot.

So does this proof that the average Ferrari fan doesn't know race history? Or was the poll related to F1 drivers only?

Do wonder how many of these voters do even know who Tazio Nuvolari was? :(

Well if we know so much better, then why don't we give our top 10s?

Now considering everyone before Schumacher, Massa and Barrichello I have not seen live it will go like this:

1. Schumacher
2. Lauda
3. Ascari
4. Villeneuve
5. Hawthorne
6. Hill
7. Surtees
8. Fangio
9. Alonso
10. Sheckter

Honourable mentions to Ickx, Alesi and Raikkonen.

This is purely subjective, based on what I've read about the drivers and docs I've watched. Remember more than anything it is what the driver makes a fan FEEL more than any titles.

Ferrari fans themselves know exactly why Gilles is held in such high esteem. I have him lower than most in fact.

The most important Ferrari drivers are imo:

Schumacher

Ascari

Lauda

Then Gilles, because Gilles has given so much to the continuing auroa of both Ferrari and Formula One.

Fangio at Ferrari wasn't that great, and it was certainly his luckiest title imo.

Kimi. :rotfl:

There's not really any other candidate to top the list, for me. Not only did Schumacher win five titles, but they were Ferrari's first for two decades. He probably took more outstanding, remarkable victories for Ferrari than any other drive took routine victories.

It's interesting isn't it when you compare it to the fan poll earlier in the year where almost a third of respondents said Ferrari was their favourite team.

Maybe Ferrari is just the only team they have heard of and they know nothing about motor racing and F1's history.

Joe Public unfortunately control the majority opinion but also coincidentally know nothing collectively. only 10% of the population know what they're talking about.
