Paul,

It's the original longer version of Solitude used from 1925 - 8. The bottom half with a link road featuring the famous never ending ess bends ( that Phil hill said were harder to learn than the whole of the Nordschleife ) was used for the later version until 1965.

front: Mike Spence, John Frankenheimer, Brian Bedford; then Bob Bondurant, Jo Bonnier, Jo Siffert; Phil Hill, Antonio Sabato, Yves Montand; James Garner, Chris Amon, Graham Hill.

........but oddly Ritchie Ginther is missing; he did a lot of filming, standing in for Bedford, but perhaps at the time the photo was taken he had gone to Japan to start testing the Honda.

no Chris Amon, but Jonatham Williams

Definitely Chris Amon:

Jonathan Williams wouldn't even have come up to Garner's shoulder........

Useless trivia Part 93..........Enzo Fiermonte who played the Ferrari team manager was married to a Titanic survivor and had tried to be a racing-driver himself:

There was a showing of the film in 70mm in Hollywood recently where Bob Bondurant, camera supremo John Stevens, Eva Marie Saint and Evans Evans (the real Mrs Frankenheimer - she played Mrs Randolph) attended:

I have read that James Garner is in extremely bad health, that Scooter Patrick and Davey Jordan visited him recently and came away in tears..

I don't think he can be too bad - apparently he watched the Olympics with his daughter, and his biographer visits him for lunch weekly. He doesn't get out much, presumably because of his severe arthritis.

Is it a case of "Doesn't time fly when you're enjoying yourself!" :) or is it: "Where have the last ten years gone?"

I forwarded that group photo to Chris a few hours ago and he phoned me instantly - delighted to have seen "for the first time".

Ireally must capture some his recollections about the making of the movie - there was one particular actor who no one liked and Frankenheimer encouraged Chris and co to always go a bit faster when towing that guy behind the GT40.

Michael and co, that actor would be Antonio Sabato, who according to Frakenheimer, was a bit of a peacock.

The Cobra 427 used for planning in-car filming, glimpsed in the helicopter shots on the viaduct at Monaco and seen in post #1285, was up for auction last Friday:

Talk of Monza layouts and the GP this w/e are as good a reason as any for a new picture of a Lotus 33 'Yamura'.......and no reason at all is needed to see Francoise Hardy again.

"Buzz" Buzzaglo posted this picture on Facebook recently and identifies the short bloke on the left with the grey helmet as Ken Costello....or do you mean the man in the white shirt with the red jacket over his shoulder?

(another shot I hadn't seen before, circuit unknown - maybe Spa if that is #24 on the body)

While watching the 1968 film 'The Love Bug' today (what else is there to do on a wet afternoon?) I noticed during the last racing scenes a little bit of the tune from GP was used within the music.

Another link is that the stunt driving co-ordinator on TLB was Corey Loftin who did the same job on GP (including spinning Stoddard's BRM at Monaco before 'Big Blow' took over), and among the drivers was Tom Bamford who was Garner's stand-in on GP.

Guess who's celebrating her 69th birthday tomorrow, 17th January.

It's my privilege to be broadcasting her wistful tones all over the planet this evening on Rob's Retro Show.

I might even slide in part of a well known theme tune as background music...

Rob
PS Tune in here...Rob's Retro Show 6pm until 8pm. I'll probably feature her shortly after 7.00pm.
