Yes, I had the Motor or Autocar report on that event once and remember from reading it that LNER laid on extra trains from Hatfield for the spectators, and it was noted that quite a few doctors (who did have some petrol) had called by when on their rounds. Hire car operators had some fuel too, and there seemed to be more of those than normal (they'd have been hired with driver so people clubbed together to hire one to go to Luton Hoo). There were also rather more policement than normal which was rather sad.Interesting piece in latest Bugantics Spring 2012 about the problems of the March 1948 speed event at Luton Hoo after the post war basic petrol ration (c 90 miles per month) had been terminated (ie so there was no private fuel) in late 1947
