Here is a yarn:

Peter used to try out his

father's racing car at a disused

aerodrome near his home at Shat-

terford Grange, Arley, "just to find

out how it felt."

Birmingham Gazette, Monday 3 Oct 1949, Page 3

Where could this have been?

What was "his father's racing car"?

"Perton near Wolverhampton"

Perton was a Flight Training airfield under 21 Group. It was opened in 1941 and was shut down in 1945.

As post 101 has not been answered in full. this was the Cooper 500, which according to Ed McDonough's book was tested at Perton (he spells it incorrectly as Purton) by both his father and mother too. The money must have been his father's but most references imply joint ownership.

In a military context, Purton was a WW2 (and for long after) fuel depot well south.  .
