In 1939 there was a race from Tobruk to Tripoli, which was won by Alfa Romeo with their
6C-2500SS in ranks 1, 3 and four. Now I found in an Italian book written by Curami the information on a race from Bengasi to Tripoli on March 3rd 1939, won by Ercole Boratta in an Alfa Romeo.
This was a round of the Campionato Italiano Sport. Now I wonder if these could be one and the same race? Has anybody any information on this race (races?), especially the ID of the Alfa Romeo drivers. Maybe someone has complete results?

The Littorania Libica between Tobruk and Tripoli on 26/3/39 was indeed won by Mussolini’s chauffeur Ercole Borrato, though apparently his co-driver, factory mechanic Consalvo Sanesi, did most - if not all - the actual driving. The BMW factory entered a team of 328s but the entry was otherwise pretty much all Italian.

First, I apologize for bumping such an old thread, but I've waded into a mess on another forum and a small part of it could be cleaned up by a question relating to this subject.

Does anyone know if there was ever a 1940 Tobruk - Tripoli race scheduled or held? If yes, does anyone know where results could be found?

Was the race held regularly, or sporadically (as the posted results indicate?)

Thanks in advance.

P.S. I will note that our own Michael Müller has already chimed in on said-post with his opinion that the 1940 race never happened. I have no reason to doubt him, merely to corroborate his statement.

Thanks.

Slightly OT, but the name Consalvo Sanesi rings a faint bell: Sebring 65, IIRC. Near the end of the race, exiting the pits, wasn't he in a slow-moving poorly-lit car (Alfa?) which was punted in the tail by a Cobra with ensuing fire? And didn't Jocko Maggiacomo figure largely in the heroic rescue?

All this is strictly from memory, so I won't swear to 100% accuracy, but I was there and seem to recall these were the principals involved.

Hahahahah. Thanks. I did a search and that thread didn't come up. Dr. Stu is actually asking for the same reasons I did.

You are right. Sanesi was trying to drive the car down to the chequered flag while the car had some mechanical trouble (transmission shaft, or clutch - explaining why the car was started carefully along the pitlane). I seem to remember he was actually not a regular driver of that car in that event, or maybe it was just not his scheduled stint, and he decided that he could be able to finish the race despite the failure. The Alfa was indeed a Giulia TZ, and that was the last race of Sanesi's career as he suffered serious burns, recovered slowly and later worked only as test driver. Maggiacomo did indeed extract him from the burning car.

Now about the reason for reviving the thread: Michael responded efficiently on the other forum: how one can positively prove that something DIDN'T happen defies anyone's logic. Otherwise, as Michael stated there, the non-existence of the 1940 Tobrouk-Tripoli is common knowledge... at least among kowledgeable people.

I have another Italian source for a 1940 scheduled calendar of races, no need to post one more: it says the same!

I know this is OT, but I'm puzzled: was the Jocko who saved Sanesi's life in '65 the same individual who T-boned NASCAR's Bobby Allison at Pocono in '88? The Pocono Jocko was born in Nov '47, so would've been just 17 in '65, which seems awfully young to be diving into a flaming Alfa.

30 minutes of googling hasn't cleared the issue up, but I'm convinced there were two Jockos, roughly a generation apart. Were they father and son?

@Lotus23: No need for googling. Just use the "Search BB" button on this forum. It would have led you to my  lists on the "Happy Birthday" thread.
Jocko Maggiacomo Sr. was born on 21 January 1914 and died on 24 February 1997 (something about him here),
Jocko Maggiacomo Jr. was born on 30 November 1947.

Jean-Maurice, back on my feet - ahm at least on one foot again - just one tiny correction. It is Holzschuh not Holzschuss.

And is it Bavarelli or Baravelli, or are these two different persons?

Actually they are Boratto (not Borrao), Baravelli (not Bavarelli), Leonardi (not Leornadi) and Bellucci (not Belluci)

Hi to all,
I'm looking for some picture about Maria Antonietta Avanzo with her Fiat 1100 Tassi & Rivola #18 at TOBRUCK-TRIPOLI IN 1939.
Beside her there was Federico Fiorelli.
Let me know where I can find some picture of her car (book, reviews, etc).
Many thanks to all!!!!!

You'll be lucky! UDO hasn't posted here since November 2010!
