Not the first ever race by a woman, Rob, but maybe the first lady in a race, driving a car:
1998-03-06 Mme. Laumaille finished 7th in cycle-class
1899-07-01 Mme. Labrousse took part in the Paris-Spa race. She finished 5th in the cycle-class.
Next Lady in a racing car - after the Ranelagh Club race, where four Ladies took part - was:
1901-06-27 Paris - Bordeaux Mme. Camille du Gast / Panhard&levassor, finished 33th over all

My problem is that my Betts and other similar material are all on microfilm and not readily accessible without having to take a trip to the local library and then hoping that at least one of the microfilm readers is still working....

I have these results indeed from Phil Harms.
The source were AAA records and the NY Times.
The date was indeed 14t April.
A few additioms
W.H. Hall (Locomobile Steamer 5hp) out after 42 miles
Dave Morris (Steamer 5hp) out after 38 miles.
Phil Harms provided me with a lot of results from the period 1900-1908 on PDF format. Those who are interested may send me their email addres.

The Ranelagh Club was situated at Barn Elms, Barnes. Primarily a polo club, it also catered for golf, tennis, croquet etc. In the 1890s it ran Ladies carriage driving competions, so I suppose it was a small step to organizing a Ladies horseless carriage event of some sort. What puzzles me is the name of the winner Miss Wemblyn. As far as I can see no such surname exists amongst the millions of names on the various genealogical databases. It would be a pity if the winner of the first "Ladies Race" is condemned to obscurity because of a spelling mistake. Any ideas?

I've been doing some digging around this subject recently. "Miss Wemblyn" was actually "Miss Weblyn". She is likely to have been one of the daughters of Clifford Weblyn (Webling), either Katherine or Theodora Jessie. I suspect Katherine; the fact that Miss Weblyn seems to have played no more part in the Edwardian "motoriste" scene tallies with her early death in 1901.
There were more ladies' races held at the Ranelagh Club, later under the tutelage of the Ladies' Automobile Club.

Katherine Elizabeth Weblyn (1871 - 1901) married as early as 1891. So in 1900 she already was Mrs. Addenbrooke.
Theodora Jessie Weblyn (b. circa 1877) married Rupert Tattersall in 1902. So in 1900 she was still Miss Weblyn.

My great grandfather (Urgroßvater), Wilhelm Schmitt, won 1st Place: Fernfahrt Nürnberg-Bamberg-Nürnberg 17/06/1900, 16-PS Benz-Rennwagen. He left Germany in the early 1900's. The family now live in Cape Town, South Africa. If anyone has information/pictures of the 1900 race, please post. Thank you
