Hi Dennis,

Could you please help me!

I have a grammophone dated "grand prix milan 1906."

Could you tell me if there was such an event and give me details on this matter.

What makes you think this gramophone has any connection to motor racing?

1906 in Milan only two auto sport events were staged, both touring car affaires:
* Milano - Sanremo on April, 4-5, 1906. A contest held in two stages over 317 km.
* Coppa d'Oro del Turismo, Milano on May 14-24, 1906.

I can find other races in Italy in 1906, but none near Milan. Is settant'anni di gare your source Hans?

there MIGHT be a connection to the phonograph, but I dout that it would have been a prize of some sort... :

There must be someone on the internet that knows about old phonographs and is as obsessed about them as we all are about cars...

I would say that the gramophone in question could have been presented as a prize in one of many singing contest held in Italy at that time when Enrico Caruso was considered to be the greatest operatic tenor and in Italy thousands of men participated in various singing contests to emulate the great master.

I think you might indeed find that the 'Grand Prix Milan' was a trade show award of some kind, for the excellence of the gramophone's design or sound reproduction - as in dairy products winning the 'East Midlands Gold Cup' at an agricultural show, or a beaten copper truss earning the 'Grand Prize of the Crystal Palace Exposition'?

Ah, I'd always thought that Pietro Bordino was riding mechanic for Vincenzo Lancia! Maybe he was employed by both FIAT men? (Btw, it was "Fiat" only from 1907 onwards...;))

And didn't you lot know that the Grand Prix Milan was the famous forerunner of that wonderful European singing contest, the Grand Prix d'Eurovision?

Il concorso di vetturette, indetto della Gazzetta dello Sport, in primo vero, da Milano a San Remo, in due tappe, aveva richiamato l'attenzione sui minimi o minori veicoli, reclamati dal gran pubblico e forzatamente reietti ed esulanti da maggiori prove. Ed anche qui il pallio della prova, la Coppa del "vecchio chauffeur" donata dall'on. Biscaretti di Ruffia , ricompensava i modesti ma intelligenti sforzi di una casa italiana che aveva presentato una coppia di vetture leggere, la "Taurinia" mentre il Maffeis di Milano mancava il gran premio, dopo una regolare ed intelligente dimostrazione fornita nel percorso, per una inesatta dichiarazione al momento dell'inscrizione. E le Marchand, le Otav, le De Vecchi-Strada, erano tutte ottimamente al traguardo, coi loro premi per categoria e colla soddisfazione dell'eccellente conclusione ottenuta, nonostante il tempo e le strade pessime.

And another problem with Milan-Sanremo run - the dates

Diatto's site (http://www.diatto.co...ne/racing1.html) shows 4-5 April, but Milano-Sanremo site - 2-3 April

But the programme (?) of the event provides 2-8 April!



And in the Delsaux's book it is stated as 2-18 April!
