Hi Dennis,

Could you please help me!

I have a grammophone dated "grand prix milan 1906."

Could you tell me if there was such an event and give me details on this matter.

With many thanks

What makes you think this gramophone has any connection to motor racing?

1906 in Milan only two auto sport events were staged, both touring car affaires:
* Milano - Sanremo on April, 4-5, 1906. A contest held in two stages over 317 km.
* Coppa d'Oro del Turismo, Milano on May 14-24, 1906.

I can find other races in Italy in 1906, but none near Milan. Is settant'anni di gare your source Hans?

there MIGHT be a connection to the phonograph, but I dout that it would have been a prize of some sort... :

There must be someone on the internet that knows about old phonographs and is as obsessed about them as we all are about cars... :rotfl:

Thanks,
Stu

I would say that the gramophone in question could have been presented as a prize in one of many singing contest held in Italy at that time when Enrico Caruso was considered to be the greatest operatic tenor and in Italy thousands of men participated in various singing contests to emulate the great master.

Stu - right, Emanuele Alberto Carli.

I think you might indeed find that the 'Grand Prix Milan' was a trade show award of some kind, for the excellence of the gramophone's design or sound reproduction - as in dairy products winning the 'East Midlands Gold Cup' at an agricultural show, or a beaten copper truss earning the 'Grand Prize of the Crystal Palace Exposition'?

Milano - Sanremo on April, 4-5, 1906, 317 km.
Cars costing L. 4000 to L. 8000
1 –Giovanni Gagliardi (Diatto Clément 10/12 hp) in 9h17m03.0s

Cars costing below L.4000
1 – Carlo Maffeis (De Dion B. Mp 8) in 10h32m27.6s
These are only the top results. Sorry, but I am not into touring cars as should be well known by now.

Coppa d'Oro del Turismo, Milano on May 14-24, 1906.
1 – Vincenzo Lancia (Fiat 24 hp)
2 – Enrico Maggioni (Brixia Zust 28 hp)
3 – Alesssandro Cagno (Itala 24 hp)
4 – Felice Nazzaro with Bordino as mechanic (Fiat 24 hp)
I think this should suffice for touring cars.

Ah, I'd always thought that Pietro Bordino was riding mechanic for Vincenzo Lancia! Maybe he was employed by both FIAT men? (Btw, it was "Fiat" only from 1907 onwards...;))

And didn't you lot know that the Grand Prix Milan was the famous forerunner of that wonderful European singing contest, the Grand Prix d'Eurovision?

I am not sure if this was a race or rally or something like that.

I have a slightly different results:

Source - http://archivio.mila...toria/1906.html

I vincitori della "Marcia Milano-Sanremo" furono i seguenti concorrenti:

- Categoria I:
1° Tamagni su Marchand in ore 9.12'14''
2° Gagliardi su Diatto-Clément in ore 9.17'13''

- Categoria II:
1°Maffeis su De Dion in ore 10.32'27''
2° Sormani su Otav in ore 11.39'54''

Nella "Gara per il Record del chilometro" i vincitori furono i seguenti partecipanti:

- Gruppo I:
1° Tamagni su Marchand in 1'3''3/5
2° Ferrari su Ford in 3'17''

- Gruppo II:
1° Maffeis su De Dion in 1'48''
2° Sormani su Otav in 4'22''

-Gruppo III:
1° Vanetti su Mercedes in 50''2/5.

And also there is a small text about this competition in Italian 'Annuario Sportivo 1906-1907"

The Google gives the next translation:
The competition of small cars, organized by the Gazzetta dello Sport, for the first time, from Milan to San Remo, in two stages, drew attention to the minimum or less vehicles, claimed by the general public and in exile forcibly rejected by more evidence. And here the pallium of the test, the Cup of "old chauffeur" given by Mr. Biscaretti of Ruffia, rewarded the modest but intelligent efforts of an Italian company that had made a couple of cars read, "Taurinia" while the Maffeis Milan missed the grand prize, after a smooth and intelligent demonstration provided in the path, for an incorrect declaration at the time of the inscription. And Marchand, the Otav, the De-Old Road, were all well at the finish line, with their awards by category and with satisfaction the excellent conclusion obtained, despite the weather and bad roads.

Is this translation correct?

And another problem with Milan-Sanremo run - the dates

Diatto's site (http://www.diatto.co...ne/racing1.html) shows 4-5 April, but Milano-Sanremo site - 2-3 April

But the programme (?) of the event provides 2-8 April!

Posted Image

And in the Delsaux's book it is stated as 2-18 April!
