Doug asked once in some thread information about Lotario Rangoni's death. This is what I was able to find out.
b. 1913
d. 2/10/1942 while testing a new plane in Pistoia (between Florence and Lucca, more or less).
Doug asked also for the make of the plane. It was probably made by Officine Meccaniche Pistoiesi, an old local firm, on licence. My surmise is that it was a Breda airplane, but I have no proof.

Alessandro - now we're getting somewhere. Thank you so much for taking this trouble.

Did you ever get to "somewhere", Doug? There seems to be nothing anywhere on the net about this plane, although I did find this page in Italian which has an eyewitness report of the crash and pictures of a memorial to Rangoni:

No - didn't get any further - but thanks for this input. Other matters gained precedence.

More than twelve years later ...

Found this today. The suggestion that Rangoni was a test pilot appears to be wrong - it seems he was the junior of two pilots in a Nardi FN.315 trainer. However, I'm open to correction on that, since my English translation of this article was courtesy of Mr Google!

Don't know if it answers Doug's question, but in 2013 a little book was published on 'il drake e Lotario Rangoni Machiavelli:

Here you can see content and chapters ('look inside'-function) i.e.'' Pistoia 2 ottobre 1942'' , as Vitesse said Nardi  FN315 plane...
