I got this request from a lad in Brazil, I am unable to confirm the true colours of the Frank Williams Politoys sponsored car, I have always thought they were black, but could they have been a very dark shade of blue?

Rainer,

I'm not sure, but of the top of my head, I would say it was a very dark shade of blue.

My memory said dark blue as well, but checking the colour pages in Motor Sport, it looks black!

I knew Brazil has a history of providing refuge for political asylum seekers... but surely not that far back?

THe Motor Sport report of the Spanish Grand Prix said that it was dark blue.

Saw Frank's 721 at the International Trophy in 1972, and it was definitely very dark blue, not black.

Cheers

One small point - Rainer's correspondent does specify the March 711, not the 721. That figures, as that was Pace's car. Both wings (or the wing and the tea tray!) were white.

Here is Henri Pescarolo in the Williams March at Kyalami, South Africa in 1972...

Carlos Pace in a Williams March at Jamara, Spain in 1972...

Pace again in a Williams March at Nivelles, Belgium in 1972...

They all appear to be either black or a dark blue.

Also try the following site for individual races during the 1972 season...

Rainer

I got the same mail from Julio Cesar. I have sent him some pics from 1972 that show it was definitely dark blue... "I know 'cos I was there!".

In fact it was a similar dark blue to Rob Walker's colours IIRC. Siffert's & Hill's Lotus both looked black in some photographs.

Exactly - Frank's preferred colours were dark blue - definitely, definitely NOT black.

Frank used many colours. F3 cars in 1967 were a two-tone green. F2 in 68 & F1 69 a very dark blue much darker than Rob Walker's. 1970 DeTomaso red. 71 dark Blue again then various sponsors colours.

Have a look at Carlos Pace's and Henri Pescarolo's cars at the NĆ¼rburgring in 1972 here:

The Piers Courage Tasman car... green and gold? Green with some stripe, I'm sure.

I've revived this old thread - to ask a question of course
It concerns the livery at the beginning of the 1971 season.
I have several colour pictures of the 711/3 driven by Pescarolo and the car is always red there. Either the 701/6 is always red, Ray Allen drove the red March in the Race of Champions, but the 711/3 driven by Peterson was dark blue (or grey) :

The question is: was it this dark blue they applied in 1969/1972 or simply they didn't manage to paint it red? Did they use this blue/grey livery in other races this season?

Trust me - nothing grey about Frank's cars - very dark blue, as in BLUE.

Doug, I really trust you. But what about other very dark blue entries in 1971, if there were any?

Probably of little or no help, but this is the only useable pic I ever took of a blue Frank Williams-entered car; the Politoys upon its debut at Brands in 1972.

Merely to confirm what Doug said - dark blue, always dark blue.

In fact I think the colour on the cars up to the much-loved (well by me anyway!) Politoys, was exactly the same as Piers Courage's Brabham in 1969.

My photograph of Pescarolo's 711 at Silverstone shows the Williams Transit van in the usual dark blue.

The 1969 Williams' Brabham was black with white stripes.

The red March was red because of the sponsor Motul.

Then the cars went a very dark shade of blue.

Sorry Luis, but I with MCS & Vicuna (plus all of images ;) ).. the 1969 Williams Brabham was dark/midnight blue with a central white stripe.

... small white stripe on the nose and big yellow ones on each side and yellow aerofoils.

Thak you, gentlemen. Now we have two nice pictures there to compare, with the Williams transporter and the Politoys. The shade of blue looks pretty similar on both photos.
Nobody remember any other races in blue in 1971, so there was only this one probably.

Interesting that early in 1972 Pace's 711 had the 721 airbox and Pesca's 721 had the 711 "tea tray"... Hard to tell one from another.

BTW I have a polite request to make my Williams files more complete - is there a picture of Cyd Williams driving the 701 or sitting in available, please?
