1963 RAC was the 1st rally I saw.*....Dad was #79. the Start was in Blackpool, Stage 1 Grizedale then a road section through Ambleside, up The Struggle to a PC at top of Kirkstone....then down past Brotherswater [where we lived] and onto Greystoke for Stage 2. I stood in our car park watching the cars going past [can still picture them now] before #79 stopped.

* Though I'd seen lots of other types of motorsport before then, I hadn't seen any rallies presumably as most were at night and Dad was likely to be competing, he wouldn't have taken me along.

Chris, do you have the other crew member for #47 Austin Healey Sprite, registration YGN 177, driver from the USA, H. C. Folts? Bishop?

Unsurprisingly winner of the "U.S.A. Trophy" on the 11th London Rally, 22-23 September 1961, in the Sprite with W. Metcalf. He was Hal Folts, seen 1961-1963, in Sprite and Mini-Cooper etc.

#155 Austin Mini, 881 DGK, on the R.A.C. Rally in 1962 with Bishop (white roof).

Harold C. Folts, born 29 October 1935, Lakewood, Ohio? Was he in the U.S. Navy?

A Hal Folts turns up at Crystal Palace, Saturday 3 August 1968:

#51 Nike FF, for Forth Broadloom Carpets Racing Team

Hal Folts obituary

Hal served two years in the US Navy [...]

Hal's early positions sent him to England where he took up motor sports; rally, Formula Ford, & mechanic. His chassis builder's wife had a sister, Jennifer Mary Stitson, with whom he fell in love and married. Hal's US Government job took them to Germany, France and back to England. During this time his three children were born; Karen, Michelle, and Bryan. In the Summer of 1970 the family moved to Vienna, Virginia, USA. Back in the States, Hal traded auto racing for boating and fishing.

13-18 November 1961:

Other changes

to the programme are that Sir Charles

Kimber's Volvo has been moved up to

Class Four because it has a 1,780 c.c.

engine, while Ivis' Austin Seven is trans-

ferred from Class One to Class Four. A

notable non-starter is Eger's Mercedes-

Benz, which is reported to have been

involved in an accident in France. Among

the British contingent, John Whitmore

replaced Bill Bennett in Galliford's Mini-

Minor, while Michalkiewicz, Huntridge,

Fitzgerald, I. G. Smith, Makein and

Woodcock, Bullough and Dacre-Lacey are

non-starters.
