Jean-Pierre Jabouille was Renault's first and only driver from the '77 British to the end of the 1978 season. René Arnoux ended with that 2nd drive from 1979 onwards.

Does anyone know if other drivers were also in the running for that second seat and, if so, what led to this choice ?

:)

Didier Pironi was first choice, but he wasn't released from his Tyrrell contract.

That seems logical.
I'm just wondering though - why couldn't ELF ( who had ties with both teams ) do anything about it then ?

Didn't Elf discontinue their association with Tyrrell at the end of 1978?
