Which reminds me - some poor person wrote in to Autosport in (I think) the early '80s, triumphantly announcing to the world that he had at last found out what the theme music for the BBC F1 coverage was. He got a very withering put-down from the editor saying that as 'Rumours' was one of the best-selling albums of all time, 'The Chain' might just be known by more than a few people.

Not a patch on David Lawson's excellent Wimille Alfa but... I've got four!

Barry - As you mentioned my 158 above I thought I would impose once again by showing a picture of it.

This slot car which I've built for next February's "Earlybirds" race meeting at Wolverhampton is meant to represent Jean-Pierre Wimille's 1948 Reims winner. I take no credit for the beautifully mastered fibreglass bodyshell which is by Dave Jones.

David, is the reason for his expression that he dreads his upcoming trip to South America?

Or perhaps he's been debating whether or not he should buy a return ticket?

Ray

I use Airfix soldier figures as the base for my drivers and as Wimille was middle-aged by 1948 I selected a head that was carrying a little weight but I agree he does look a bit grumpy.

I doubt he was concerned about his South American trip as he enjoyed racing for his friend, Gordini.

I tried the Airfix soldier route for the drivers in the Alfas pictured above. A dismal failure I'm afraid! A couldn't see how to get them looking like racing drivers.

Anyone want to buy a set of unused multipose soldier figures, 32nd scale? :)

For those who never venture into the Racing Collectables section of TNF - be grateful... be very grateful!

Anyway, the latest rubbish from Anglesey is this pair:

Finally painted in Ford Forest Green and PLEASE don't tell me about all the other, closer, colours that I could/should have used.

Rumour has it that the next new Cartrix models will be the 1959/60 Aston Martin Grand Prix and 1961 Scarab Formule 1, both may come out this year.
And they will also make the Ferguson 4 wheel drive 1961, however I am not sure as a 4 wheel driven device..
I think they are only rear wheel driven, a pity...

Wasn't there a 4-w-d Ferguson model slot-car at one stage?

I know nothing at all about slot cars (or much else) but when I was at skule in the 60s one of my friends had a chassis which not only had 4 wheel drive but "steering" too i.e. the front wheels were attached to the "thingy" which goes into the slot in such a manner that the wheels always aligned with the slot, even if the car was sideways. Needless to say this contraption just ran rings around everything else. I'm not sure if it had been bought, or if his Dad made it. It carried a variety of sports-racing car bodies from the period. I remember we bought some special tyres for it from the Model Shop on Bootle St/Deansgate in Manchester; they were quite soft and had a diamond tread pattern.

Wasn't there an MRRC Mercedes W125r with (non-prototypical) 4wd - came as a kit with an awful lot of tiny ball-bearings?

Ah, Pete, sounds like one of the MRRC 4-wheel drives. They did a Mercedes and an Indy Novi. Beautifully designed and a joy to behold, when completed. http://www.mrrc.com/history.html

Tony, Alan,
That could well be the fellow! Looking at the e-Bay photo of the chassis it fits the bill, however, the sort of bodies which my mate fitted were Porsche 904, Ferrari 250LM, etc. Protesting to the skule scrutineer (woodwork teacher) about the 4wd did me no good as he said the real cars were running under prototype rules and that my puny Scalextric Lotus 25 ought to be running rings around the rest of the field, rather than the other way round.

Speaking of which... when will the Kilton Spring Cup be held?

Yes there were MRRC 4 wheel drive models..
These were real gems:
I really like to see the Instruction sheet of them.
Back in the early 80's I was able to buy them for only 6.99 pounds!!
from MRRC
BIG Mistake: I NEVER did..

What possible reason could I have for rioting? My MP is George Gideon Oliver Osbourn (heir to two Irish Baronetcies) and my MEP is Nick Griffin.

A little bump for the "old rubbish" thread.

I had the pleasure today to drive a few of Barry's grand prix cars round his very accurate Monaco slot racing circuit, after struggling initially I eventually managed to set a time that would have seen me scrape onto the grid for the race he has just run in his 1957 season.

Thank you for the opportunity Barry and I wouldn't mind another go some time.

I’ve had the pleasure of driving Barry’s cars too David. They’re great to look at and tricky to handle compared to today’s million miles an hour specimens with magnetic downforce.

I’m not being in any way personal but are you a thumb or finger man?

I don't do slot cars with magnets - they are for wimps.... :)  I like Barry's cars they are actually fairly predictable once you've found a rhythm but you do have to be precise and then they do a really good turn of speed.

I used to be a thumb man but now it's the finger.

David does himself an injustice.  His best time with Peter Collins' Ferrari would have put him 7th on the grid.

Barry raced at the weekend in a little sports car event in Southend. He also brought along four, two-car teams of his lovely 1950s grand prix slot cars that we could race at the meeting.

Barry is warming up the Johnson motor in Fangio's Maserati 250F (some of these old motors don't perform until they get fairly hot)
