Just spent a couple of entertaining hours ploughing through this thread :up:

Since the free lunch with Image Shack is over I apologise in advance if the answer to my question was once obvious to see here, but can any one advise me as to which "Alta GP chassis" the body of Charles Fripp's Gomm Special, seen above, might once have resided on as  hinted at half way down this FISCAR blurb ?

Been a bit lazy recently especially as all I see where the photos used to be is some ImageShack advert.

Could the chassis for the Gomm Special have been F2/1 the ex Tony Gaze car. The engine went into a HWM and the rest of the car used for a Jaguar engined special.

Frank was born in 1898 so he's not with us anymore not sure when he died but I could ask my mom tomorrow

58 is Frank O'Boyle he sold it to the Bellevue Garage in 1946

#58s was purchased by the Norris brothers early post WW2 and subsequently became the Norris Special utilising an Alta twin tube chassis and Lancia front suspension.

My father is the new proud owner of the HW Alta-Jaguar RPG 418 and HW Alta NPA5.

It would be great if anyone has more old pictures/info/stories of them.

I remember seeing the car as a schoolboy when it was raced in Kenya at Nakuru by, amongst others, Peter Shepherd, Peter Sargeantson and Beau Younghusband.  I have no photos unfortunately.  All I can remember with any accuracy is that it was painted red.   I'll dredge through the memory bank and post anything else I can remember on here.

Only just picked up this thread again.  I was told that the Peter Sargeantson car in Kenya in the late 1960s was the ex Scragg HWM (? SPC registered) not the Alta (Alta GP1 registered RPG 418).   Is this correct ??

The car that Sargeantson drove had the registration KHJ 144 so this may just be another red herring - dont know if KHJ 144 was an UK reg.   It didnt seem to have Alta type rubber block front suspension like RPG 418.

Any ideas anyone ?

According to Doug Nye's Powered by Jaguar, Phil Scragg had two HW-Alta-Jaguars.  The first was RPG 418 which was originally Alta chassis GP No 1, or GP101.  After Spragg sold it, it raced for some years in Britain before being exported in 1959 to Uganda and Kenya with Frank Brown and was later owned by Peter Sargeantson.  He goes on to say:  "The original Alta rubber-block rear suspension was replaced by a transverse-leaf spring system, presumably to provide greater travel on poor surfaces."

KHJ 144 is a Nairobi registration number dating from about 1962.  As the Alta went to East Africa in 1959 it was presumably originally registered in Uganda when Frank Brown was living in Uganda.

The second car that HW Motors built up for Phil Scragg was SPC 982.  This car spent its whole racing career in Britain.

Thanks for that.  It is still a bit mysterious to me as in a photo that someone showed me of Peter Sargeatson racing what is described as "an ex Scragg Alta" there is no sign of the front rubber block suspension (assuming only the rear was replaced on GP1 and not the front as well).  

I was told that this car registered KHJ144 was an HWM Jaguar - although incorrectly described at the time as an Alta Jaguar.

To add to the confusion I understand that HWM constructed a second Alta Jaguar for Scragg in about 1956 using the ex Tony Gaze F2 chassis and this initially used the registration number SPC 982 for a short period.  In about 1957 HWM then built a pure HWM Jaguar for Scragg which then took on the SPC 982 registration (and also used some of the parts from the second Alta Jaguar which had the ex Tony Gaze F2 chassis).

However this still makes me wonder what the Sargeantson car was as it didnt seem to have the front rubber block suspension ??
