Only coment here is lack of money is the almost universal reason for cancellations.
1980 Spanish was not cancelled ,but took place, only points were removed after the event for political resons.
1980 Italian GP was held at Imola.
1983 Swiss GP scheduled for Dijon was cancelled due to lack of TV coverage. French RTF refused to cover more than one motor race a year!

I didn't know that there were plans for a US GP West in 1972. Can anyone add any details?

It was held in 1971 as the non-championship Questor GP at Onterio Motor Speedway (California not Canada!)a combined F1/F5000 race.It was on the FIA calendar as as WC USWGP for'72..

I think the source you are working from is not too well informed.

1958 German GP was not cancelled - it was won by Tony Brooks in a Vanwall

1960 German GP was not cancelled or boycotted - The ADAC made the deliberate decision to run it as a Formula 2 race. The most likely reason for the decision was the lack of interest in a Nurburgring race without German competitors. (This was the main reason the 1959 race was run at Avus, although politics came into it). And in 1960 the F2 Porsche was on the pace.

No race has ever been cancelled as a result of a safety boycott. The closest is the 1960 Italian GP which was boycotted by the British teams because of safety fears if the bumpy banking was used. There have possibly been occasions where the authorities have refused a licence to a circuit on the grounds of failing to meet safety standards, but that is a different issue from a boycott by the teams.

As Rob29 has said, the main reason for cancellation is financial.

1977 German GP took place at Hockenheim- won by Niki Lauda in a ferrari

I'm not sure about the 1981 and 1986 South African GP's. It was as more a question of South Africa's foreign exchange problems because of sanctions than of sporting sanctions.

There was most definitely a 1981 South African GP. just as there was most certainly a 1980 Spanish GP. There was the "Grande Premio do Rio-de-Janeiro" on the 1952 CSI schedule for 14 December at Gavea that isn't listed.

Naturally, it appears that this list completely ignores any non-WDC rounds or pre-War(s) events that were cancelled for various and sundry reasons.

Plus, there are no end of what might be charitably referred to as "Imaginary GP's" which popped up from time to time and which some took seriously despite there being little more than high hopes to base the event upon.

Just because it wasn't a CSI/FISA/FIA WDC round doesn't mean it didn't "count" or didn't matter or that it didn't happen.

Interesting thread; I was going to open one similar as somewhere I have some info (but not available now).

It was Ontario Motor Speed. For more info about this track, you can give a look on GEL Motorsport Tracks Around The World or Racingcircuits.net

Of course the same happened to 1970 German GP: it took place at Hockenheim as well, and it was won by Jochen Rindt (Lotus).

To be fair, it looks as if the list is not so much of cancelled races but WC races that did not take place for some reason, the final column being the position in the WC season of the purported race (e.g. 1981 SAGP being the season opener - it took place but not as the 1st round of the WC). Boniver is not a native English speaker, so the word 'cancelled' may not be 100% accurate. Damned if I can find a word for it tho'!

And if you look at some of the non-cancelled races, the table makes things clearer - e.g. a 1960 German GP at AVUS or the 77 race at the Ring certainly did not happen. They took place somewhere else.

Your list inspires me to the question: what was the best Grand Prix that never took place?

Europe GP, Rome EUR, October 13th 1985
(It's not in the list, as some more, I will add on next days when I will have time to collect the whole list).
Well, to be honest I don't think it would have been the best, but you know, I'm Italian, so... :)

On my website You can find track map (both 1984 and 1985 proposed layout) and some low quality photos.

This GP was canceled, IIRC, in March 1985 and it was replaced by another European GP, held at Brands Hatch the previous Sunday, October 6th 1985. By the way, it was first GP won by Nigel Mansell and Alain Prost won here hir first world championship.

I reckon the New York (Flushing Meadow) would have made a good circuit.
Also Palermo Park (Buenos Aires) & a Fuengerola street circuit which Tiff Needell tested a F.Renault on c.1984,and reported to me that they had a lot of work to do!

I'd vote for the 1957 Grand Prix of Los Angeles as reported in Road and Track magazine.

1956 Calendar-missing is the Swiss GP -Berne which was on the full FIA calendar printed in Nov 1955 Autosport & its cancellation was reported early '56. Later that year Swiss banned all racing.

Not the best, but certainly very intriguing.

More on EUR as a GP location here - don't forget Tre Fontane...

1985 Belgian GP was not cancelled but postponed. If memory serves me correctly, the newly laid track surface broke up during Friday practice ( They still ran the F3000 race on Saturday though ! ) and the GP was run in September.

1985
According Autosprint # 52/1984 (page 15), updated to December 1984:
  • 1. Brazil GP (Jacarepaguá) - April 7
  • 2. Portugal GP (Estoril) - April 21
  • 3. San Marino GP (Imola) - May 5
  • 4. Belgium GP (Spa) - June 2
  • 5. Canada GP (Montreal) - June 16
  • 6. Detroit GP (Detroit) - June 23
  • 7. France GP (Paul Ricard) - July 7
  • 8. Great Britain GP (Silverstone) - July 20
  • 9. Germany GP (Nürburgring or Hockenheim) - August 4
  • 10. Austria GP (Österreichring) - August 18
  • 11. Netherlands GP (Zandvoort) - August 25
  • 12. Italy GP (Monza) - September 9
  • 13. New York GP (Flushing Meadows) - September 23
  • 14. Rome GP (Rome EUR) - October 13
  • 15. Australia GP (Adelaide) - November 3
  • 16. South Africa (Kyalami) - November 17
As you can see, there is no Monaco GP (May 19) because it has a great conflict with FISA in winter 1984-1985 and it was quite sure it would have been canceled. Later all problems were solved and Monaco GP was held as usual.
Belgium GP was posponed to September 15, as LittleChris has just explained.
Germany still had to choose its circuit.
New York GP and Rome GP were canceled and South Africa was moved to October 19.
Dallas GP had been canceled just before this calendar was issued.

Ciao,
Guido

(message edited after fines's post #73: South Africa date was mistyped)

2003
Well, of course don't forget Belgium 2003.
Original 2003 calendar should have been:
  • 13. Hungary GP - August 17 (then moved to August 24, before Belgium GP was cancelled)
  • 14. Belgium GP - August 31 (cancelled)
All others GPs didn't change.

Ciao,
Guido

Here are several which appeared on the initial 1964 International Calendar:

1964.04.05, Grand Prix de Pau

1964.04.26, Grand Prix de Bruxelles, Heysel

1964.05.17, Gran Premio di Roma, Vallelunga

1964.05.24, Grosser Preis von Berlin, AVUS

1964.07.05, Grand Prix de Reims

1964.09.13, Grand Premio di Pescara

1964.11.01, Phoenix Grand Prix

1964.12.26 * South African Grand Prix, East London

Several were changer to F2 -- Pau, Rome, Berlin, and Reims, one moved to 1965 -- the South African GP, and the the remaining cancelled. The Phoenix GP was scratched when the new road course -- incorporating part of the newly paved oval -- was not ready in time. It would finally be ready in the Spring and Dave MacDonald would win the inaugural event there in one of the Shelby King Cobra Cooper Monacos Fords -- CM/1/64. Heysel never seemed to be a realistic proposition, but when one imagines the Twiddlers on the Pescara circuit....

French GP is not new in such a problem...
Next year will be an ingteresting bet between Canada, France and Brazil.
Personally, if I should choose one circuit to kill :) I would choose Magny Cours: I don't like it very much... Interlagos and Montreal are much better and much more interesting!

This was the winner of an 'around the houses circuit for a London Grand Prix' competetion in Autosport in 1968/9.

Imagine it happening with 2004 F1 cars

Perhaps the best GP that never took place was when the Alfa Romeo and Ferrari teams, along with the Lago-Talbots and the others never ran the United States Grand Prix at Watkins Glen on the original circuit. Had that happened, well, perhaps history would have been different for American racing in many ways..... Just imagine 500kms on that circuit with the Alfa team at its height!

Which race meeting in Australia was it that was to have seen a Works Alfa presence?

It might have been pie in the sky, but it was promulgated in the magazines at the time... and eventually reported that the starting money was to have been too high.

John Medley will know this one... I don't think it was a Bathurst, perhaps Lobethal or Ballarat?

But I have to agree, Don, having seen the footage of the old Watkins Glen, that would have been a real treat. Bremgarten on the other side of the Atlantic?

1980
(from Autosprint #2/1980 page 11 - just before Argentina GP)
  • 1. Argentina GP (Buenos Aires) - January 13
  • 2. Brazil GP (Interlagos) - January 27
  • 3. South Africa GP (Kyalami) - March 1
  • 4. USA West (Long Beach) - March 30
  • 5. USA East (Watkins Glen) - April 13 (moved to October 5)
  • 6. Belgium GP (Zolder) - May 4
  • 7. Monaco GP (Montecarlo) - May 18
  • 8. Spain GP (Jarama) - June 1 (points removed after the race due to political reasons, so it must be considered a Non-Championship GP)
  • 9. France GP (Paul Ricard) - June 29
  • 10. Great Britain (Brands Hatch) - July 13
  • 11. Germany GP (Hockenheim) - August 10
  • 12. Austria GP (Österreichring) - August 17
  • 13. Netherlands GP (Zandvoort) - August 31
  • 14. Italy GP (Imola) - September 14
  • 15. Canada GP (Montreal) - October 5 (moved to September 28)
  • 16. Las Vegas GP (Las Vegas) - October 19 (Canceled)

At beginning of February (Autosprint #7/1980 page 14) this calendar was changed: USA East was moved to October 5, so final section should have been like this:
  • 14. Canada GP (Montreal) - September 28
  • 15. USA East (Watkins Glen) October 5
  • 16. Las Vegas GP (Las Vegas) - October 12 (or 19?) (Canceled)
A Mexico GP was proposed for October 26, I don't know if as a championship race and I don't know on what circuit (Acapulco, Mexico City or anywhere else?)

Later, in April (Autosprint #16/1980 page 7), Las Vegas GP was moved to November 2, then it was canceled (I don't know exactly when).

1981
(from Autosprint #11/1980 page 11 - just after 1980 South Africa GP)
Just after South Africa GP 1980 Eccleston begun to work at 1981 F.1 calendar and he fixed date for initial GPs:
  • 1. Argentina GP (Buenos Aires) - January 11
  • 2. South Africa GP (Kyalami) - January 24
  • 3. USA West (Long Beach) - March 1
  • 4. Mexico GP (Acapulco) - March 15
  • 5. Brazil GP (Interlagos) - March 29 (the only one with correct date!)
I have no info about Mexico GP but a small one: its circuit was refused because average speed would have been to slow for a F.1, no more that 120 km/h. Of course this track was NOT the old Magdalena Mixhuca (from Autosprint #9/1980 page 11)

(from Autosprint #3/1981 page 7)
In winter between 1980 and 1981 war between FISA and FOCA went on, so in January 1981 there were two different F.1 calendars. FISA calendar had 13 GPs, 8 of them (blue) were in common with FOCA one. I have 12 GPs with 7 in common, so one GP listed as FOCA-only (surely not Brazil and Austria), should have been present in both calendars. I think this GP was Germany GP (because of date), so I insert in FISA too, even if Autosprint didn't mention it.
The only GP raced in such a condition was Nashua GP (South Africa, Kyalami), then they solved this problem and they went on with one single calendar. Here following both calendars updated to mid January.

1981 FISA F.1 CALENDAR (updated mid January 1981)
  • 1. Argentina GP (Buenos Aires?) - February 22
  • 2. USA West GP (Long Beach) - March 15
  • 3. San Marino GP (Imola) - May 3
  • 4. Belgium GP (Zolder) - May 17
  • 5. Monaco GP (Montecarlo) - May 31
  • 6. Spain GP (Jarama) - June 21
  • 7. France GP (Paul Ricard or Dijon) - July 5
  • 8. Great Britain GP (Silverstone) - July 18
  • 9. Germany GP (Hockenheim) - August 2
  • 10. Netherlands GP (Zandvoort) - August 30
  • 11. Italy GP (Monza) - September 13
  • 12. Canada GP (Montreal) - September 29 (Sept 29 was Tuesday, I think it's a mistyping and correct one is Sept 27)
  • 13. USA East GP (Watkins Glen) - October 3
1981 FOCA F.1 CALENDAR (updated mid January 1981)
  • 1. Nashua GP (South Africa, Kyalami) - February 7
  • 2. USA West GP (Long Beach) - March 15
  • 3. Brazil GP (Jacarepaguá) - March 29
  • 4. Canada GP (Montreal) - May 3
  • 5. New York GP (Manhattan) - May 9
  • 6. Belgium GP (Zolder) - May 17
  • 7. Monaco GP (Montecarlo) - May 31
  • 8. Spain GP (Jarama) - June 7
  • 9. France GP (Paul Ricard or Dijon) - July 5
  • 10. Great Britain GP (Silverstone) - July 18
  • 11. Germany GP (Hockenheim) - August 2 (surely it was a FOCA GP; I'm not sure it was also a FISA one)
  • 12. Austria GP (Österreichring) - August 16
  • 13. Netherlands GP (Zandvoort) - August 30
  • 14. Italy GP (Monza) - September 13
  • 15. Mexico GP (Mexico City) - September 27
  • 16. Las Vegas GP (Las Vegas) - October 4
1981 NON CHAMPIONSHIP RACE
  • GP DEL SOLE PRO SUD (Imola) - April 12
This was a proposed non-championship GP for collecting money in order to help people from Southern Italy that suffered a big earthquake in November 1980. I know that this proposed race was moved to June 1981 and maybe to Mugello circuit, but I don't know if it was ever raced (with different cars, of course, as it is not listed within F.1 race).

(from Autosprint #7/1981 page 4)
In South Africa GP report, so less then one mounth later than previous paragraph, there is a calendar quite similar to the real one used. The only difference are:
  • 1. Nashua GP (South Africa, Kyalami) - February 7 (I think that FOCA hoped to consider it as a world championship GP, but later points were canceled
  • 16. USA East GP (Watkins Gles) - October 4 (in May-June it was canceled and replaced by Las Vegas GP, raced on October 19)

This is the very first 1986 calendar, issued between in summer 1985, just after Detroit and before France GP. As you can see, it's quite different from definitive one: Japan, Netherlands and South Africa GPs were not raced and there are no Spain and Hungary GP. (from Autosprint 27/1985 page 9)

  • 5. Monaco GP (Montecarlo) - May 11
  • 6. Portugal GP (Estoril) - May 25
  • 7. Canada GP (Montreal) - June 15
  • 8. USA GP (Detroit) - June 22

This is not surprising. The first Hungarian GP was scheduled for as early as 1984, but the negotiations were slow and the contract was signed only in September, 1985, so in-mid summer it wasn't sure at all that a race would take place the following year in Hungary.

I forgot to add that Hungary, New York, Curaçao (Brazil) and Europe GP (at Silverstone) were listed as possible "spare GP" (what is correct English name?)

Ciao,

Reserve Grands Prix, I assume. Is the Curaçao one the Netherlands Antilles circuit which held an F3000 race?

Thank you for Reserve GP: today I have learnt something new :)

As regards Curaçao, yes, you're right, it's the same circuit. I wonder why I wrote Brazil
Maybe I need some extra sleep :)

It was when the negotiations with the former Soviet Union had stopped that Hungary came into the picture as a possible scene of a Grand Prix. According to a legend, when Bernie Ecclestone was on his way back from Moscow with his private jet after the unsuccessful discussions, his friend, Tamas Rohonyi, Brazilian race director (who had happened to have Hungarian parents) suggested him to hold a race in Hungary. Bernie had had no idea where that country is. Rohonyi replied: "We're just flying above it"

A F2 race was cancelled in the 70's which was supposed to be held in a town by the name of Ashkelon in Israel.
If anyone's interested I can dig up an article and find out more information.

Reserve: Venezuela GP (on what track?)

USA (Phoenix) and Hungary have economical problems, Canada has not asked anything about 1992 GP yet.

Changes at end of August 1991:
(From Autosprint 36/1991 page 47)
  • South Africa GP could be raced either at Kyalami or on a street circuit at Sun City.
  • Second GP will be USA GP (Phoenix)
  • Brazil GP will be raced on June
  • Second Japanese race, Asia GP, will be raced at Autopolis (Japan)
  • Maybe there will be 17 GPs.

reserve GPs for the 1998 season were South Africa/Kyalami and China/Zhuhai
the Portugese GP in 1998 was cancelled because of undone renovation work (originally scheduled for 11-oct-1998, Japan did not take its place, and took place on 1-nov-1998, like it was scheduled in the first place).
and in 1997, the Portugese GP was cancelled because it would have been the 18th race of the season (originaly scheduled for 9-nov-1997, 2 weeks after Jerez), especially Ferrari, McLaren and Sauber were against an 18th race.

No, it was not San Carlos. It could have been on a street track or at La Victoria, approx 70 km far from Caracas.
Mr. Alessandro Pippione proposed a permanent track there, 4450 m long, quite fast. I have a partial map (Autosprint 32/1991, page 42), as soon as possible I will add it on my website.

As regards San Carlos, it hosted World Morcycle Championship GP from 1977 to 1979 (according to Racingcircuits.net). At end of 1970s there were rumors about a F,1 GP there, but of course nothing happened.
Track map can be found on my website.

  • Germany GP - August 4
  • Austria GP - August 15
  • Netherlands GP - August 25
  • Italy GP - September 8
  • Hungary GP - September 22

Brazil GP is not on this list, because of money problem (as usual!) but in the same page another small article says that São Paulo municipality proposed to move GP to Interlagos.
As we know, GP went back to Interlagos only in 1990...

GP was not moved for safety works, but for "political reason". As both Imola and Monza wanted to host a GP, they agreed to alternate, as it used to happen in Great Britain (Silverstone and Brands Hatch), France (Paul Ricard and Dijon), shortly Belgium (at first Nivelles and Zolder, later Zolder and Spa), Spain (Montjuich and Jarama). First GP at Imola should have been in 1979, but it was moved back to Monza as it was Italy 50th GP and bacause Imola was not ready for a World Championship GP. SO, first one was in 1980; then San Marino GP was introduced and Italy GP never moved from Monza.

Are you sure? According to my sources, in June 1982 Ecclestone went to Moscow for a proposal, but GP was scheduled for August 1983 (as in your second row quoted here). More details on Soviet racing thread.

1983 GP Zuid Afrika Kyalami race (boyot ZA - Frankrijk) 16 race

1983 South Africa GP was run on October 15th. It was won by Riccardo Patrese (Brabham BMW); Nelson Piquet won there his second world championship and Ferrari his last constructor championship before Schumacher's age.

20-5-1985 GP Belgie Spa track broke up, race to september x

It was two weeks later: practice were run on Friday May 31st and Saturday June 1st; GP should have been on Sunday June 2nd.

22-9-1985 GP Hongarijen Hungaroring cancelled (first calender) 16 race

I think this GP was scheduled at Budapest Népliget Park. I have a map of this proposed track on my website; it was quite similar to circuit used from 1936 to 1972.

Guido

1958 German Grand Prix did take place at the Nurburgring it was won by Tony Brooks

As I said before the 1960 German grand Prix was not cancelled. It was run at the Nurburgring (Sudschlief) for Formula II cars.
The reason was financial as
(a) the Porsche was compettitive in Formula II and the Germans being patriotic would come to watch a German car win
(b) the Sudschlief is shorter than the Nordschlief and less costly to marshall
There was definitely no boycott of a planned Avus race on safety grounds.

I asked before what is the source of your list?

I sighted this thread for the first time today. Very interesting.

A brief comment on Ray Bell's mention of works Alfas in Australia : I know nothing of this, but there is some evidence that Auto Union did enquire about running at least one car in a series of events in South Australia , Victoria and New South Wales deliberately calendared close together early 1940 or, failing that, early 1941. The South Australian venue was to be Lobethal, the NSW one Bathurst , and probably a new circuit at Ballarat the Victorian one. One can only imagine the support such a venture would have had among all those German-descent Barossa Valley vignerons, and Auto Unions at Lobethal and Bathurst ...... what a thought !!

The first fly in the ointment is that the " enquiries" were probably made by DKW's rep in Australia, the very same Baron von Oertzen who had " managed " Ewald Kluge and the DKW motorcycle team in Australia 2 years previously : he may perhaps have been kite flying.

The second and larger fly were the events of 1939-1945 that stopped all that.

Re GPs that never took place: in the late 70s in Australia there were plans afoot to run an All Historic race meeting one year, a meeting centred on Formula 5000s the next, then a full Formula 1 GP the next....... in the middle of Sydney, including 2 long straights one northwards the other southwards across the Sydney Harbour Bridge.
