  • Brazil GP (Jacarepaguá) - March 21 (March 14 on South Africa GP report)
  • USA West GP (Long Beach) - April 4
  • San Marino GP (Imola) - April 25
  • Belgium GP (Zolder) - May 9
  • Monaco GP (Montecarlo) - May 23
  • USA GP (Detroit) - June 6

  • Italy GP (Monza) - September 12
  • Las Vegas GP (Las Vegas) - October 16 (September 25 on South Africa GP report)
Argentina GP was replaced by Netherlands GP, run on July 3.

I recall also rumors about a non championship races at Donington just after Las Vegas GP, canceled because teams had no time for ship cars from USA to Great Britain, but I don't recall where I find this info.

  • Europe GP at Jerez in October could have replaced Argentina GP. As we know both Argentina and Europe GP were run; the latter at Nürburgring on October 1st

A brief comment on Ray Bell's mention of works Alfas in Australia : I know nothing of this, but there is some evidence that Auto Union did enquire about running at least one car in a series of events in South Australia , Victoria and New South Wales deliberately calendared close together early 1940 or, failing that, early 1941. The South Australian venue was to be Lobethal, the NSW one Bathurst , and probably a new circuit at Ballarat the Victorian one. One can only imagine the support such a venture would have had among all those German-descent Barossa Valley vignerons, and Auto Unions at Lobethal and Bathurst ...... what a thought !!

The first fly in the ointment is that the " enquiries" were probably made by DKW's rep in Australia, the very same Baron von Oertzen who had " managed " Ewald Kluge and the DKW motorcycle team in Australia 2 years previously : he may perhaps have been kite flying.

The second and larger fly were the events of 1939-1945 that stopped all that.

Re GPs that never took place: in the late 70s in Australia there were plans afoot to run an All Historic race meeting one year, a meeting centred on Formula 5000s the next, then a full Formula 1 GP the next....... in the middle of Sydney, including 2 long straights one northwards the other southwards across the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

Boy, you'd think that Holger or brun would have picked this one up and run with it!

And John, you're dead right... the thought of an AU at Lobethal defies imagination. Surely it would have spelled the death of its driver had he made any serious effort to scarper from the town out to the start/finish area in a really big hurry?

That means, of course, such a car would never have made it to Bathurst. Pity, really...

1983 South Africa GP was run on October 15th. It was won by Riccardo Patrese (Brabham BMW); Nelson Piquet won there his second world championship and Ferrari his last constructor championship before Schumacher's age.

In 1985 both Renault and Ligier boycotted South Africa GP. Philip Streiff - Ligier second driver - at Kyalami drove second Tyrrell (run by Capelli after Bellof's death).
I don't think Alliot and Ram boycotted South Africa GP, as they didn't go to Australia as well. I think they simply run out of money. I think this is again the reason why after Italian GP RAM had only one car: after Winkelhock's death, they had for three GP Kenneth Achenson.
Also Palmer (Zakspeed) was not at Kyalami, but on that year they run only European GP.

Sorry, a bit late in my reply, but just reread the thread.

The race was the Australian Grand Prix at Calder Park on 16 noverber 1980. Alan Jones had just become WC and he was invited along with Bruno Giacomelli and Didier Pironi to race there.
Jones won the race in a Williams FW07, Giacomelli came second in the works Alfa 179. Those where the only F1 entries as Pironi drove a local F5000.

In 1977, Japan GP was scheduled on April 17th; then it was moved to October 23rd because of economical reason and/or because they had not enough time for do all changes required by CSI.

1975

(from Autosprint 1/1975, pages 25 and 31-38)

World Championship GPs, calendar issued at end of 1974:
  • Argentina GP (Buenos Aires) - January 12
  • Brazil GP (Interlagos) - January 26
  • South Africa GP (Kyalami) - March 1
  • Spain GP (Montjuich) - April 27
  • Monaco GP (Montecarlo) - May 11
  • Belgium GP (Zolder) - May 25
  • Sweden GP (Anderstorp) - June 8
  • Netherlands GP (Zandvoort) - June 22
  • France GP (Clermont-Ferrand) - July 6 (moved to Le Castellet)
  • Great Britain GP (Silverstone) - July 19
  • Germany GP (Nürburgring) - August 3
  • Austria GP (Österreichring) - August 17
  • Italy GP (Monza) - September 7
  • Canada GP (Mosport) - September 21 (canceled)
  • US GP (Watkins Glen) - October 5
France GP was moved from Clermont-Ferrand to Le Castellet because it was considered too dangerous.
French federation decided to rotate French GP, I think between Dijon (last used in 1974), Le Castellet (last used in 1973) and Clermont Ferrand (last used in 1972). Le Castellet accepted 1975 GP only if it could maintain also 1976 GP, as scheduled. For this reason, following GP at Dijon was raced only in 1977.

I just want to take the opportunity to thank Guido (et al) for the material in this thread - it's so good to have it all here in one place; in the past I often searched for hours for only a fraction of the info displayed here.

One of the reasons TNF's so great!

There was a passing reference to a New York Grand Prix in an Autosport from 1951...presumably a totally wild rumour that got into print, rather than any serious attempt to host a race.

How about an entire series cancelled?

Autosport, 4 August 1977 (hee hee, I feel like a kid with a new toy with these) reports that the purported non-title Imola race to be held on 25 September was going to be a test run for a European F1 Championship.

The idea was that the race would only be open to drivers who had not scored a WC point and had less than 2 years' of uninterrupted F1 seasons, with a prize fund of £60k.

It was the brainchild of Autosprint editor Marcello Sabattini, who wanted a series of 10 races at circuits not holding a WC round if at all possible. He was hoping for 20 starters complying with F1 regulations. Ex-F2 driver and general factotum of independent teams at the time (Henton, Ensign, Rebaque and others) Peter Gaydon was going to assist with the project.

Unfortunately, at a press conference on 8 September, the CSI nixed the series, stating that the regulations were too unclear to give sanction and could adversely affect F2 and F3. It would be for later consideration. We're still waiting.

Then again, given the entry to the Imola race, perhaps it was never going to take off. Whilst I would be salivating at the prospect of such a series, I bet the average punter would not be interested. After all, the entry was so poor that the race was scrapped a week or so before it was due to take place.

What was the entry? As at 19 September it was:

-Eddie Cheever (Ferrari 312T2)

-Bruno Giacomelli (Brabham BT45)

-Arturo Merzario (March)

-Loris Kessel (Apollon)

-err, no-one else

Seems to have been badly timed, as the following week alternative entries were due at the USGP or Snetterton for the Group 8 race. The withdrawn entries would have made the entire grid the most mouthwatering line-up for an F1 event outside the Bologna car park demos:

-Brian Henton (March)

-Tony Trimmer (Surtees)

-Emilio de Villota (McLaren)

-Lamberto Leoni (Surtees)

-Teddy Pilette (Stanley Steamer)

-AN Other (ditto)

-Boy Hayje (F&S March)

-either Lella Lombardi or Giancarlo Martini as a team-mate to Hayje

-and the one and only Otto Stuppacher, digging out his Tyrrell in an attempt to make an F1 grid, although why he would withdraw is mysterious, surely he was not intending another transatlantic jaunt?

Hmm, maybe F1 was missing a trick with the 3rd cars, they should have given them a 5 lap support race thrash...

Interesting; you can read more details on Non championship F1 races at Imola - 1963 , 1977 and 1979 thread.

I have also discovered that also in 1976 there was a canceled non championship GP at Imola; I'm going to post more details in few minutes.

1976

(from Autosprint 2/1976 page 19, 10/1976 page 5, 12/1976 page 31 and 23/1976 page 24)

World Championship GPs:
  • Argentina GP (Buenos Aires) - January 11 (canceled)
  • Brazil GP (Interlagos) - January 25
  • South Africa GP (Kyalami) - March 6
  • USA West GP (Long Beach) - March 28
  • Spain GP (Jarama) - May 2
  • Belgium GP (Zolder) - May 16
  • Monaco GP (Montecarlo) - May 30
  • Sweden GP (Anderstorp) - June 13
  • France GP (Le Castellet) - July 4
  • Great Britain GP (Brands Hatch) - July 18
  • Germany GP (Nürburgring) - August 1
  • Austria GP (Österreichring) - August 15
  • Netherlands GP (Zandvoort) - August 29
  • Italy GP (Monza) - September 12
  • Canada GP (Mosport) - September 26 (moved to October 3)
  • US GP (Watkins Glen) - October 10
  • Japan GP (Fuji) - October 24
Non Championship GPs:
  • Race of Champions (Brands Hatch) - March 14
  • BRDC Graham Hill Memorial Trophy (Silverstone) - April 11
  • GP Città di Bologna (Imola) - April 19 (canceled)
  • Switzerland GP (Dijon) - May 9 (canceled)
Argentina GP was officially canceled only on December 30th, but days before there were rumors about it, because of political situation and ecomomic problems. Also Brazil GP was in danger, because it could have been too expensive to go to South America for only one GP rather then 2 GPs. Mr. Nacache (Brazilian A.C. president) suggested to move GP on March 14 or to race another GP at Brazilia, either non championshiop or championship race. Ecclestone never mentioned this GP.

South Africa GP was in danger as well, and I think it was canceled because of economic reasons. On January 3rd a new sponsor was found and on January 4th Mr. Ugeux (CSI president) said that March 6th is still available for South African GP, if all problems were solved. They were, and GP was raced.

There were also many problems about the last GPs: teams did't want 3 GPs in America and Japan without enough time to go back to factories in Europe, so they want to cancel one of them. Canada was the most probable, maybe for economic reason. After some months, during Monaco GP, Ecclestone suggested to have Canada to October 3rd, US GP on 10th and Japan on 31st, but finally Japan was moved back to its original date.

At South Africa GP there was a meeting between team managers and nearly all of them decided not to go to Imola and Dijon for non championship GPs. I have no more info about Switzerland GP at Dijon.
Imola was supported only by Ferrari and March. They tried to change date to May 9th, June 20th or 27th and even September 19th, but with no results. I have just posted the same info also on Non championship F1 races at Imola - 1963 , 1977 and 1979 thread.

In 1990 a non world championship F.1 race was scheduled at Donington on April 16th. I don't know its official name: Autosprint once called it Race of Champions, once Gold Cup.
It was canceled in mid February because this date is to close to April 22nd, when the first F.3000 race was scheduled there.
According to rumors even after it was officialy canceled, it could have been raced as world championship race for replacing Brazil GP: at that time Interlagos was still under reconstruction and Brazilian GP wasn't sure. Another possibility was to replace Brazil with Austria, but Brazilians were able to finish in time and they had their GP.

1984

(from Autosprint 3/1984 page 7)

  • Brazil GP (Jacarepaguá) - March 25
  • South Africa GP (Kyalami) - April 8 (Moved to Saturday April 7)
  • Spain GP (Fuengirola) - April 29 (canceled)
  • San Marino GP (Imola) - May 6
  • France GP (Dijon) - May 20
  • Monaco GP (Montecarlo) - June 3
  • Canada GP (Montréal) - June 17
  • US GP (Detroit) - June 24
  • Dallas GP (Dallas) - July 8
  • Great Britain GP (Brands Hatch) - July 22
  • Germany GP (HOckenheim) - August 5
  • Austria GP (Österreichring) - August 19
  • Netherlands GP (Zandvoort) - August 26
  • Italy GP (Monza) - September 9
  • Europe GP (Nürburgring) - September 23 (moved to October 7)
  • Hungary GP (Budapest) - October 7 (canceled)
New York GP (scheduled on September 23) and Belgium GP (scheduled on April 29 at Zolder) in January - when this calendar was issued - were canceled. Belgium GP should have been replaced by SPain GP at Fuengirola, but later Zolder was confirmed (the race was the first victory for Alboreto on a Ferrari) and Fuengirola never hosted a GP.
Europe GP should have been moved from October 7th (its original date) to September 23rd and Hungary GP was scheduled on October 7th. As we know, Europe GP was moved back to its original date, October 7th and Hungary GP was run only 2 years later. I think Budapest means Népliget Park; for sure not Hungaroring because was built just before 1986 GP.

Guido

I believe the original date for the South African GP would have been Nov 17 - there is a reason why I remember this, and it's (almost) spooky: In a 1979 interview, Niki Lauda was questioned if he thought about retiring, and his answer was something like this: "I can't tell you that in advance, I'm not planning ahead to determine my last race will be November 17, 1985 - I will retire when I feel like retiring." A few days later he stepped out of his Brabham and retired on the spot, only to come back two years later. But for a late season rescheduling, his last race would indeed have been on November 17, 1985! :drunk:

Very funny and Interesting!

By the way Nov 13 was on Wednesday: of course, a mistyping of mine!

Not necessarily. Yes, there were plans to refurbish the old Népliget track and hold the Grand Prix there, but there was another idea to shape a new street circuit in the Városliget, perhaps where the Formula Junior races were held in the 60s.

I have maps of these "proposed" circuits somewhere, I will try to find and scan them.

A very expensive week-end it was too!

I arrived on the Friday morning to find there was nothing going on except track inspections. The track had broken up almost immediately having only been laid about two to three weeks before. After a lot of 'will it or won't it' discussions they abandonded proceedings. I made my way back to the Circuit Office and found out that they had postponed the Grand Prix and would run it in September. I was able to get a form for a refund on my Three Day Ticket and travelled onto my hotel in Brussels. Due to the travel arrangements I had two days in the Belgian capital!!!! :

I eventually got a refund on the ticket but all the other expense I had gone too was lost. Needless to say I didn't return in September!

I did eventually go back to Spa in 1988 for the Grand Prix but the whole episode was probably the start of the decline in my interest in Formula One.

1975

A draft of 1975 calendar was issued in Spring 1974. There are two news: Belgium and Monaco GPs were swapped (but I don't know if in comparison to 1974 season or to a previous draft) and a Portugal GP is scheduled on April 6th 1975. I don't know on what track, I think Estoril (opened in 1972).
(from Autosprint 21/1974, page 62)

In June 1974 a new draft is issued (but without specifying circuits) and it's exactly the same already posted on my post #62.

Maybe not the best place to ask this, but does anybody know the proposed date of the cancelled 1914 Coupe de l'Auto? Was it to be run at Boulogne, again?

I was sent by Leo67 other proposals for Hungarian GP. I have just uploaded on my site two of them, two proposed permanent circuit: Tápióbicske and Velencei-tó (click to open my page). There is also another proposed layout for Népliget Park, but I had no time to upload it yet.
You can find original article in Hungarian on http://balmazka.uw.h...tor1985okt.html, but I can't understand it :D

(from Rombo 29/1983 page 20)

There were rumors for new GP at Miami (Tamiami), Atlantic City, Australia, China and Japan: the two Americans couls have replaced Switzerland and Spain in april (FOCA Calendar).
Sion circuit is quite interesting, as in Switzerland race in circuit were banned: they wanted to change the law and built a new circuit in a former airport. I have some more details on my website.

I just want to show that FiA made it very wrong by continuing 1994 Imola GP.
Just ... can you say: do you agree that cancelling in such cases (death !) are anyway better than continuing ?
or you think that nothing can stop current GP even death ?
That`s it !

The 1938 Parramatta Grand Prix that was planned to be run around the course at Parramatta Park on the 5th of November, was cancelled late on the afternoon of the 4th of November by Police Commissioner Mackay, after qualifying sessions had been held. Safety concerns for both competitors and spectators were the reasons given for cancelling the race.

An interesting thought.  Had they cancelled the race due to Ratzenberger's fatal accident, Senna would have survived.
