I have been going through some of my dad's Can Am and Formula 5000 pictures and I was wondering what has become of Jackie Oliver? Is he still alive? Does he still do anything with racing?

Thanks,
Neuz

He's had a few outings at the Goodwood Revival Meeting in recent times too.

Also has been racing a '65 Mustang in the "Heritage GT Challenge" which supports the British Touring Car Championship, in competition with such chaps as Andy Rouse, Gerry Marshall, Tiff Needell and Eugene O'Brien. Jackie is also not averse to throwing the car at rounds of the Classic Touring Car club championships too.

He lives not too far from me - about 6 miles or so - as I was driving through the village he lives in - I noticed he had nice Christmas lights on his house :D I was going to add a little more but the BRDC site says enough

I've met Jackie Oliver in 2002 during one of the supporting races of the Historic Spa 6 Hours. He was competing in the "Top Hat" series sharing a Mustang with P. Hallford. It's a one hour race and there's a driver switch. They finished 21st. This year (2003), they finished 11th driving the same car. Here are some pictures of the 2003 race :

Thnks for the great pics Pedro, good to see people enjoying Historic racing (although the pushing of the Mustang off the grid ?? looked a little sad!!)

How did the old Jags and Minis do??

Another superb shot David - I was always a fan of Oliver's, more so after he bothered to spend about 20 minutes talking to me and my mate in the McLaren paddock area at Silverstone in 1971. We were at Woodcote for the start of the GP and Jackie managed about 25 feet before stuffing his M14 into the back of Graham Hill's Brabham. :D JohnP

Er, no. Jackie is a lady in this case.

I have not read a biography of Jackie Oliver but it is often written that he came from a wealthy background. What was it?

Jackie Oliver speaks with a London/Essex accent and a gritty voice, so not a public school boy?

He definitely looks about 15 years younger than his age.

He was born in Chadwell Heath, which is about a 15 minute cycle ride from where I live and is far from being one of the poshest of areas. Actually it's a bit of a dump.

His father owned a large commercial refrigeration factory, and , inter alia, ran a Merc 300SL, ISTR, which JO borrowed as a lad. He was an excellent guest speaker at one of RTH's film shows. Try Simon Taylor 's Lunch With article for more info.
Roger Lund

Edit. Do not blame JO for the fact that his father had a few bob.
