Hi all, I'm after some information on saloon car races at Riverside and Laguna Seca in 1968. At some time during that season, filming was done for the Disney Love Bug film and a VW was entered to get some race footage. I believe the driving was done by Carey Loftin but I don't know if the car was the Porsche 356 engined VW or a VW / Corvair engine hybrid. Unsuprisingly, I don't think the result was very good but there is some real race footage in the film, mixed in with the staged filming also done at Riverside.

Any information about the classes run, other cars or drivers or any photos would be much appreciated.

There are a few photos here (but posting pictures has never been my strong point ): )

It seems I have mostly missed 1968 in my quest for RIR programs. Sorry.

I'd like to see the photos you "posted", but Mr PhotoBox first tells me I'm not signed in. Once I've registered and signed in, he tells me he can't display the page, that I should contact him to say what I've been trying to do.

Maybe later.

These (he says confidently) are the photos from the race footage. As I said, any info on the other cars or anything to do with these races would be appreciated.

After looking at the film again, it seems that this VW was the Porsche 356 engined car, also fitted with 356 finned drum brakes, koni shocks, lowered suspension, rear camber compensator and diagonal links for the swing axles.

Still not quite a match for the real racing cars  but apparently a hoot to drive

Slightly off-topic, but Carey Loftin is most famous for a role in which he is never seen - ther truck driver in the 1971 Steven Spielberg film "Duel".

Here is 1938 footage of Loftin performing at a Los Angeles stunt show:
