Dear Atlas Members,

I was wondering whether anyone could please give me some info about Luki Botha, and his 1967 South African GP entry, and also about de Adamich's entry into the 1967 Italian GP.

I have seen a black and white picture, apparently of Luki Botha, in the book "The Complete Book of Formula One" by Simon Arron and Mark Hughes. I was wondering what the colour scheme of his car actually was, as I'm trying to paint a car with his livery, for Grand Prix Legends :p I took a guess, and said the stripe down the middle was red, the lines going round the stripe were in white, and the rest of the car was blue, with "LUKI BOTHA" in white writing, written on the side of the car, on a red sticker.

This is what I have done so far. Sorry that the car has a BT20-style engine, and that the car has a green engine cover:

I was also wondering if anyone had any additional info on Botha? If I am allowed to, can I post the image that I have in the book? :o

Secondly, I was wondering whether Dave Charlton had a similarly coloured car?

Finally, does anyone have any info on de Adamich's entry into the Italian GP of 1967? I think it's documented in one of the Motorsport magazines of the time, that he drove Ligier's Cooper, so I'm guessing it was light blue in colour? It would be helpful if anyone has any pictures of this too :)

Many thanks for any help in advance,
Paul

I think that, at the events where the drivers' names were stuck on, all the drivers names were the same colour. If you can find a picture of one of them then it will apply to the others too. (But it changed from track to track.)

Well, de Adamich did do some private testing, I believe, on the weekend of the Italian GP, or something. I'm not too sure of the details.

De Adamich first apparition in a F1 was at the 1967 GP of Spain raced on 12/11/67 at Jarama. The race did not count for World Championship that year; he had N°15 and drove a Ferrari 312 entered by the Scuderia. Qualified on second row of the grid with the 5 th best time and finished 9 th two laps behind the winner, no less that Jim Clark.
He had N° 28 on the entry list of the Italian GP that year with a Cooper-Maserati entered by Jo Bonnier (in fact the car of Sc Filipinetti) but didn't appear as the negociations were stopped.

I can confirm from photographs in Motor Sport magazine that you have the correct colours for the name & sticker. No pictures of Luki's car though :(

Thanks very much, Felix :D and Rob :) Would it be OK to post the picture I have of Botha in my book? You'll probably all say "That's not him! That's some other South African driver..." I don't trust some of the pictures in these books.

Especially the image of the so-called "Robert O'Brien" 'CIA agent', at the Belgian GP, at 52, or 53? I can't remember exactly when.

Paul
My feeling is that you could go ahead and post the image..
... you have given the source and credited the book, it is not as if you are 'claiming' the image
(I already have the book ;) )...

Some people might not have it, so here is the image :)

The images in the book are ridiculously small. Some are really bad, pixellated images. I think that's the best I can get!

Thanks! :) It must be kind of rare to have pictures of Botha, because I've never seen any before, other than these now, and he doesn't seem to have made a HUGE impact on F1 :)

Do you know what damage he received to his car, during the race? I know he collided with someone, and spent a long time in the pits, and that's about it!

Dennis Jenkinson's Motorsport report only tells us that Botha, whose engine died on the start grid and as a result lost a full lap, made two stops because of electrical trouble. They replaced the battery and he continued. He wasn't classified though, because he didn't complete a sufficient number of laps.

Sorry, I read that he collided with another car. The source must be wrong :)
