I've just bought the A-Z F5000 book- quite detailed and alot of pics not seen before. However although its talks about David Berry's sterling efforts in an ancient Brabham, there's are no pics.

What is known about David and has anyone got any pics?

Another name that springs up in F5000 is John Bowtell/Andrew Cavell, who owned a Lola T142 and McLaren M10A. There's an interesting story if I can remember where a racing official Rex Foster? removed a head gasket from his road car and transplanted into the McLaren, but to no avail, the race car retired. Nice one Rex. Such was the camararderie of F5000.

In my opinion, 10% of that would be too much.

Somebody recommended this book to me via TNF recently, but as usual I haven't had time to do anything about it...at the time I said that I thought it was sad that Mike Kettlewell hadn't written anything about F5000 as he was clearly THE authority, especially where the early years were concerned.

So, Mac Lark, I'm intrigued, what's the problem with the aforementioned book?

It's simply the most lightweight error ridden bundle of words and mostly good photos (esp. the Terry Marshall ones) of any book I own.

It's one of the few books I have where I've corrected large chunks of it because bits are so far off being close to the truth.

Allen Brown could do better if he started now and until Sunday to have it finished.

I'm inclined to agree with Mac Lark here - the Cowdrey book is vaguely interesting on specials and cars that were converted to F5000 - admittedly not something I know enough about to correct, so many mistakes probably passed me by - but it's so thin on the marques that really made the formula, and so light on insight and atmosphere that I doubt I'd pay more than a fiver for it.

Agree with some comments on the Cowdrey book, it is a bit 'lightweight', but as far as I know its the only book on F5000 so far, so perhaps we're being a bit harsh here. You're right there must be someone who can do a better job on the subject, after all most of the participants/key movers are still around aren't they ?

A friend and I were talking about doing a book on the later British 5000s/Gp8/Aurora, but I suspect it 'll never happen ...

I know I keep saying it, but Mike Kettlewell (imho) is the best man to do the F5000 book...

...perhaps I should phone him and see what he thinks...

That would be tough given that I'm in an Internet cafe in Warwick!

I agree Mike K is the right man.

Looking for an address for F5000 David Berry in North Wales recently I came across another David Berry, who said he raced Clubmans-anyone know this David?

Tried looking up Ted Walker www.FerretF1 for info on the F5000 David and the link failed- what's happened?

Dave Berry runs a garage at Rhos on Sea, raced clubmans and a very able conductor of a Frank Lythgoe Brabham BT16 during the 1960's.

This sounds like the F5000 David Berry as his mount was a BT16/21. Does he still run a garage and if so what's it called?

The F5000 Dave Berry attended the Gold Cup meeting at Oulton Park both last year and the year before & I'd be surprised not to see him there again in August, Richie.

Who else of the former F5000 brigade was there last year? Is there a reception/chat for former drivers?

Dave Berry was there for the late Justin Hayler's 1 litre F3 reunion. Other F5000 drivers who seem to be about on a regular basis are Ian Ashley and Mike Walker & TNFer Patrick Sumner. Peter Getin in scheduled to do all 3 days at Goodwood next weekend, and Brian Redman & Derek Bell will be there too. Others seen about in recent times are Clive Baker & Terry Sanger. Oh and Jody....
Teddy Pilette is never off Facebook either, infact there are many F5000 drivers still in circulation, Richie.

Who of the TNFers is going to Oulton Park Gold Cup - can we meet up? Will be my 1st trip to the event from down south. Is there a meeting place for ex F5000 drivers, parade of cars?

Did Dave Berry not do many Ingliston libre races in a Brabham with a Rover/Buick engine? In those days Ingliston used to pay generous start money for the clubby races sit is was worth his while heading that long trek.

I would be surprised not to see Dave Berry at some point over the Gold Cup weekend at Oulton. There is almost no Formula 5000 representation at the meeting this year so I'm not really expecting to see anyone other than Histoic Formula Ford racer Ian Ashley. Apart from the E-Types, it's really just another HSCC meeting.

I didn't meet David Berry but I found his tucked away garage in Rhos-on-Sea. However 'Crashley' lined up for the Formula Ford race but retired after an off.

I met Judy Lyons in the paddock around her 3 car F5000 compound and thought it hilarious that in 10 years she's still not improved or got faster. Practice was a farce, going round in 3.16 mins whilst the fastest was 1.39; her average speed 49.40mph farcical and downright dangerous, signalling to faster drivers to pass. I could have driven faster myself. An accident waiting to happen and at one stage the commentator remarked she got in someone's way, luckily, without incident. The rest of her family, Frank & Michael were steaming through the field. She shouldn't have been allowed to race.

Sadly, Mike Twite lost his life in a plane crash in August 1984. As for Mike Kettlewell, this seems to be the latest TNF news on him, from 2008:

Last I heard of Mike Kettlewell, and I stress this is NOT confirmed, just a story told to me in passing at a race meeting back in the summer , was that he was sadly in poor health and had gone off to Mexico or somewhere in central America in search of 'holistic' treatment.

Does anyone have more recent info?
