I, too saw Stephen race in the 1980 Road America Can-Am. As with all the great ones it was obvious he had it all going for him.

Very sad, indeed! I hope the balance of his life has made up for an early loss to a promising career.

I mentioned this a while ago on TNF, but one amusing memory I have of Stephen is from F3 in mid-1975. He'd been driving the Ray for Bert Ray, but I think they ran out of funds or the car just wasn't up to it. John Stokes, who owned a 'bier keller' in Birmingham called Bogarts, had been running a March 753 (743?) for himself up to that point and, hearing of Stephen's plight, offered to step down and run him in the car instead (there was a past karting connecton between them somewhere down the line).

Twinny, you'll be interested to know that I ran into John Stokes in Birmingham on Thursday morning. We spoke a little of Stephen, and then more of John's old mate from his karting days, John Hines.
Looking back at my programmes, I see John ran March 753/763s for Stephen and himself in 1976 with backing from his bier keller, now long gone, sadly.

 ...Hi Giraffe, I notice by your comment above that you `ran into John Stokes in Birmingham on Thursday` ....You really should be taking it easy these days and slowing down to walking pace mate....and get to Specsavers so you stop runnning into folk! ...great thread on Mr South though and interesting to see one or two familiar names on the entry list above....

Seriously, is there any evidence that he really ran a BMW in his March that year? I only have him with a Toyota unit!

I believe you are correct with Toyota.

Off the top of my head, the only regular BMW-powered cars around that time were the two Bang & Olufsen Marches of Dieudonné and Regout and the private March of Chris Barnett. But that was from the previous year, 1975. When Barnett reappeared in 1976 - with the same car (I think) - he ran a Toyota engine...

Happy days.
