Going by my feeble and failing memory. They wanted to test him, but it never came of.

Maybe, but according to a quote from Richard Williams of the Guardian," Alboreto's first Formula One experience came when he tested a Williams in the winter of 1980-81." :)

Not wishing to seem impatient, but is there any material available concerning the subject title?;) Or was Richard Williams talking cobblers as I suspected? :)

I remember that Michele was able to drive the WilliamsRenault in 1989... But finaly Boutsen seat in the car.
For the 81 test, I have heard of that. But, it seems that in 1989 there was no more test. So I think Michele never tested a Williams, but I am not sure.

Yes, Gughi Zanon was a great supporter of Frank Williams often providing his DFV engines for the earlier seasons. Gughi, of course, was a sponsor of Ronnie Peterson throughout his career and Alboreto adopted the Swedish colours for his own helmet. Zanon had a superb collection of Formula 1 cars which he used to run with our group in the late eighties and Alboreto, who he also backed, tested these cars on occasion.

My recollection was that Gughi had an FW08 rather than a 7, but I am sure this picture is a 'historic' car.

Gughi did try to place Alboreto with Williams and was somewhat put out given his past support of the team when the drive went to Patrese although I believe there may have been some conflict of sponsors also.

I was staying at Gughi's wonderful house on Cap Ferrat when Michele was pleading with his sponsor to back him for one more year but the cars were getting less and less competitive. He was such a smooth driver he would have continued to have a great, second, career in sports cars but for his tragic accident.

Just found this Autosprint magazine dated from 1983 on ebay with Alboreto on the cover driving a Williams.
