I have just learned that Edgar Dören died last friday (April 2, 2004) at the age of 62 - the day before the first round of the German Langstreckenpokal.
His career high light must have been his World Endurance drivers title battle in 1981, but he is one of those drivers that seems to have been around forever - usually in a Porsche of some kind.
I don't know much of this man, but I will miss his name in future race reports and results.

It was a very emotional moment when last Saturday, before the Langstreckenpokal-race, Dörens`s long-time co-driver Karl-Christian Lück, after a minute of silence (and believe me, it was silent!) drove their Porsche one last time around the Nordschleife, in front of the whole field during the warmup-lap, and waved good bye to the fans. Most of the 150-or so cars wore black ribbons, and many of them also showed stickers "Edgar we miss you" etc. (http://www.nj-rating...edgardoeren.htm) - I think, this says much about the appreciation for Edgar Dören, especially here at "the Ring".

Edgar had a long career in motorsport, from the top of my head he was Rundstreckenmeister (the second division in touring/GT in Germany) in 1975 in a VW-Porsche 914. After that, he raced in the DRM, mostly one step behind in material compared to the others (in 1976 he drove a Carrera RSR - the others the 934 turbo...) but always with decent results. A true sportsman.

Ciao Edgar!
I saw him extraordinary winner of a round of the World Sportcars Championship in 1981 at Monza 1000 Km, with Gerhard Holup and Jurgen Laessig on a beautiful dark 935-K3.

Hello to all,
I was present at 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1979 and I remember the Porsche 935 N°42
with Dören and his team mates Schornstein and Tschirnhaus.
They finished 7 overall, third in Group 5. Good souvenir.
Bye Edgar.

Sad, sad, sad!
Is that really Edgar in eukie's pic? Wouldn't have recognized him. And yes, that dark (blue?) K3 was one beautiful car!
