Thanks very much guys, I'm stunned as ever by the amount of knowledge and helpful people around here. It looks as though we can draw the conclusion that he was indeed not there at Monaco.

Oh, but I would like to call my 20/20 hindsight 'analysis' as well! ;)

Doug has recently posted some very interesting info in this thread which I hope he won't mind me reproducing here:

Not conclusive, because this does not necessarily reflect the formal entry documentation received by the AC de Monaco, but here is the 1958 Monaco GP entry listing as published in their programme for that race meeting - plus their practice time sheets from two sessions. You will notice there is no 'Ecclestone' mentioned anywhere - either as an 'entry', nor as an 'entrant', nor as having been officially timed in the two practice sessions for which we hold the contemporary official print-outs.

As David McKinney has noted in the other thread, this would appear to confirm that Ken Kavanagh took no part in the event. It would also appear to confirm that there was only one Connaught available, and that any laps which Bernie Ecclestone may or may not have done in it were very unofficial indeed.

Unless of course the organizers confused Bernie with Bruce Kessler. Have we any photos of anyone other than Emery driving a Connaught?

No, and that's strange, because we have several photos and two pieces of video footage of the car, and it's always Emery in it. However Bruce Kessler clearly says he was driving the car and there is no reason to doubt that at all. He also says that he has never seen a photo of himself in the car either. Also I don't think Ecclestone would have been capable of setting such a reasonably competitive time (considering the car).

If I may pick this thread up again almost five years to the day after my last post, thanks to the Revs Institute we now have several more photos of the car, including a colour one:

The two well-known pictures:

And three video screen captures (low quality but good enough to clearly identify the driver):

So we have 12 photos of the car and on each one of them it's Emery at the wheel. How is that possible? Ecclestone probably only drove the car for a couple of laps, if at all, but Kessler is supposed to have been faster than Emery and this is apparently not doubted, so how come there are no photos of him driving while there are 12 of Emery?

Maybe he should have sat on his wallet.

You are not being nice to the very likeable Mr. Kessler ;)
