I was reading about Mazda's racing and I found that their first competition was the 84 hours of Nurburgring. I blinked a few times at that one, and I couldn't find too much information on the race. So, who started the race, and what kind of masochists would drive it? btw, i found that the last marathon race was 96 hours

There was a 84 hours race at the Nürburgring in 1968. I will look for some more details, if the specialists are not faster.

Marathon de la Route (84 hours) - The race was held on the Nord- and the Südsloop!

August 21.- 24. 1968

I have 59 starters and 26 finishers. The two victorious Porsche work cars of Linge/Glemser/Kauhsen and Schuler/Bank/Steckkönig made 10,100 km (356 rounds). At place 4 finished the Mazda Cosmo with wankel engine. In the starter field was announced the team Martini (with BMW 1800 TI, BMW 2002 special and BMW 1600 TI). The Martini team won the constructors-cup. The three cars put together 27,100 km back. Willi Martini is even also occupied at the start and with its crew the 13. Place.




I have more informations about the Marathon de la Route (84 hours) for 1969 and 1970.

I did ask a similar question about this in an other forum. Someone suggested me to go to Frank de Jong's (a member in here) website and it got a some very good information about the 84 Hours races.

Also from one of the posts from the other forum. Daniel Stoffel typed:-

My Grandpa, Hans-Günter Stoffel, drove the Marathon de la Route.In 1970 he finished in 4th Place behind the three Works-VW Porsche 914/6.My Grandpa drove a BMW 2002 Ti.And Yes the South and North Circuits were combined!I think this Race was very hard because they only drove with 2 or max. 3 Drivers on a car...and this 84 and 96 Hours in a Row!
But it must have been a great Time of Motorracing...

As it is a race based at the Nurburgring in Germany but why the name of the event is in French?

Or did the French took up the idea first then the Germans took it into the Nordschleife and the Sudschleife?

Marathon de la route was organised by Belgian Club in replacement of former
Liège Rome Liége and Liège Sofia Liège

AFAIK, Marathon de la route is the successor of the longdistance runLiège-Rome-Liège. A belgian event.

"The Liège", as was known this rally, received officially from 1956 on the surname of "Marathon de la Route":

- "Liège - Rome - Liège / Marathon de la Route" up to 1960
- "Liege - Sofia - Liege / Marathon de la Route", 1961 to 1963
- "Spa - Sofia - Liège / Marathon de la Route" in 1964

From 1965 up to 1971 (the Nürburgring' years) the rally/race name was, simply, "Marathon de la Route".

Racing Sports Cars has results for Hans-Günter Stoffel and Hans-Günter Stoffel Jr, who I assume are probably father and son as they sometimes co-drove together:

I think one of them is on Facebook, as his profile photo shows him in racing overalls with BMW badge, and a Daniel Stoffel is listed among his friends. It might be worth contacting him to see if he is (or knows) your man:
