Originally posted by mwphoto Came across some photos and a press kit about the Dodge International Star Challenge in 1988 where musicians raced to promote 'Think...Don't drive with drugs or drink'. Vince Neil, Mick Fleetwood, Fee Waybill of The Tubes, Ted Nugent to name a few were involved.
Originally posted by Carlos Jalife There was also a Belgian band leader in the 50's racing, something like Johnny Claes seems to ring a bell.
That was Talbot/Jaguar/Maserati/Gordini/HWM/Porsche and Connaught driver Johnny Claes of 'Ecurie Belge'. He led a Jazz Band named 'The Clay Pigeons' and I believe that he played the trumpet. Apart from his many racing successes he also won the 1951 and 1953 Liege-Rome-Liege Rally's in Jaguar XK120 and Lancia Aurelia. He was a 'cool' looking guy as well. Sadly he died of tuberculosis in 1956 aged only 39.
Didnt the Saxon guy Byf Byford (probably wrong spelling) have an association with fast cars and/or racing?
Close Ghinzi, it's Biff Byford but not sure about his association with cars/racing.
Another Saxon song with a tenuous motorsport link is " And the bands played on " about the first Donington Monsters of Rock Festival in 1980, an event attended by yours truly
Cozy Powell ran a Mazda RX3 in D.J.M. Records ? or Hitachi? , which ever was the record company he was involved in. Pete
A bit of a delay here but just 'for the record' (sic, sorry about that) Cozy did indeed drive a Hitachi backed RX3 (4 door to be specific). He managed to win the class in the car on occassions. The DJM backed car was driven by the late great Tony Lanfranchi. Both were built and run by Arian Automotive. A pic of the DJM car with Tony at the helm, quoted from the Tony Lanfranchi tribute thread.
1)Chis Rea's passion for motorsport in general and Ferraris in particular has already been covered - but so far no-one has mentioned "Saudade", Chris's tribute to Ayrton Senna
2) Damon Hill (1996 World Champion) played the final guitar solo on "Demolition Man" on Def Leppard's 1999 "Euphoria" album. He also played guitar with Elvis Costello, Jools Holland, All Saints and Nick Mason on drums for a charity performance of "Stand By Me": . There is another guitar playing Damon Hill - the leader of Damon Hill & the Carolina Cowboys. The Carolina Cowboys hail from Charlotte, North Carolina - just about the epicentre of NASCAR racing (and where the abortive USF1 team was based)
3) Jacques Villeneuve's Wikipedia entry descibes him as "a French-Canadian musician and former automobile racing driver". Not quite how I would have put it - though he did record an album in 2007 called "Private Paradise", which is available from Amazon. Not cheap at £20.50 so you might want to check out this sample on youtube before splashing out
Did anyone mention Adrian Sutil? He's a pianist.
Argentine blues guitarist Pappo (praised by BB King himself) used to race in a short living stock car series called GTA and did pretty well (I think he even won a race or two)
American Country & Western singer Marty Robbins raced Nascar in the early 60's and had some enormous accidents apparently - lots of enthusiasm, but not the same amount of skill from all accounts. He featured in a Hollywood Nascar film where he sang in the bar where all the drivers gathered after the races. For the Aussies, boxing legend Lionel Rose raced an LC Torana XU-I at Calder at least once in 1970 and of course Leonard Teale of police drama " Homicide" was a familiar sight on Aust racetracks in his Corolla in the late 60's.
Cheers, Lindsay Ross
Bumping this because I've found out that the singer in this Altern 8 rave classic...
...is now married to Justin Bell. She wasn't the original singer, as the vocal was a sample, but she'd appeared in the video so there was visual continuity. Unfortunately she got stage fright and laryngitis...
Coming back to post #202 here, regarding a Cheetah owned by Denny Doherty from the "Mamas and Papas" here is a photo of the car (11th image in the link) with Harvey Lasiter who did work on it.

Jerry if you see this, can you tell us about Lasiter ?, from the post I gather you owned this car, or did it just pass through your hands ?
Since this thread started Howard Donald of Take That has done some racing....
...and is featured in the latest MotorSport magazine. He started in a celebrity A30 race and although he didn't like the A30, he did like racing and is running a period Porsche 911 2 litre. Good man!
