It's still working the same way it always has for me, Rob. That is, it highlights most of the occurrences of my chosen keyword, but not all of them. I'd say it probably misses about 10% of them. I've never understood why this happens.

It misses them because the algorithm used to do the search isn't the same as the one used to highlight them. So, for example, "M23/8" might or might not match a search for "M23", depending on whether the algorithm regards the '/' as denoting the start of a new word. So you might then get a page containing "M23/8" being returned as the result of a search for "M23" but the highlighting then ignoring it.

Or vice versa. I forget which way rounds it is and am too lazy to check

Couldn't be some kind of anti-pop-up thing on my computer could it? I use Firefox which is very good at stopping these, but I've just checked a short TNF thread of a couple of pages where the searched-for name only appears a couple of times, and while Search correctly found the thread, it missed both of the instances of posts including the name.

I know, this is the thread for suggestions, but I have a question and don't know where to ask: If I link to a thread, and that thread is moved (say, from the main forum to the Historical sub-forum), will the link still work? And also, what is the correct procedure if I want a thread to be moved?

If you want a thread moved, yes, ask TW (easiest way being to use the 'report' function)

And yes, the thread retains its original ID code, so your old link will still work, simply taking you to a different place

Just a wish from a technophobe, one of a lot on this site, it would be so much easier to be able to upload pics direct from my computer as I do for an email or to list on ebay or other advertising sites.
That is within the limited capabilities of so many of us.
I have used Image Shack, found it tedious and slow. Then an update either from Microsoft and or Image shack has changed the process and again I cannot do it. I have read Ray Bells instructions but to so many of us it is gobledook. As is so many things to do with computers for the technologically dumb!
And for the people who think it easy get out of your comfort zone and realise how hard it would be for you to do a lot of other jobs. An office manager can possibly do it, but not build engines. Yet an office manager friend cannot do this either, nor can she build engines!! Currently we have extreme difficulty getting photos onto my website, that she actually built. Text is fine but not pics.

I very much doubt that this was a problem your end, Daniel, as it happens with regularity. The forum software is now well overdue an overhaul which will hopefully happen soon and iron-out such anomalies.

I feel it is at the poster's end...

This happens to me sometimes when my computer is running slowly. It appears to not register, you click it again after a while and then a little while later perhaps again.

When it does turn over you find you've posted two or three times. But you can't delete the first post in a thread so this is more difficult to correct.

Can somebody please tell me how to correct the situation I have when I open a thread and all I get is the opening post and then a "Tree-root" of all the responses? I know this comes up periodically and I have forgotten how to resolve it?

David, I suspect your Display Mode setting has changed. To check, go to the top of the page and click on the 'Options' box on the right of the thread title bar. The Display Modes will appear - yours is probably set to 'Outline'. Click to change it to 'Standard' and all should be well again.

I have an idea for a book. It is totally a pipe dream at the moment but I was thinking of writing a book on failed sports cars. It is under the working title 'Stuck in the Pits' any ideas for cars to include. I have the Piper from Le Mans 69 and Alfa Group C car plus the Tiga-LamborghinI so far.

Likewise if postings have to be deleted, rather than deleting them comopletely, it would be better to delete the text and say "Post deleted because ..." or even simply "Post deleted"

I cant see why that would have been closed either. The discussion of railways? That's pretty easy to ignore and it seems the polite request to get the subject back to Australian Coopers had worked.

Please can you tell me if we going to get something sorted out regarding TNF photo-posting as much complained about?

Without photos the value of the forum is much diminished, and clearly many people have found it too hard. I have been inclined to persist but I am seriously thinking of giving up.

Tonight I followed Robs emailed advice from Tony on the Mt Druitt thread It was a better version of what I understood to be the procedure. I uploaded some photos at 800 wide which I know works and is a neat size for TNF. All I got was microscopic thumb nails. Two hours later I find that not only do you need to set the upload size (if it is too large TNF won't accept it but won't say why) but you have to set the download size in Imageshack when you ask for the code for Forums. Imageshack doesn't tell you this and defaults to thumbnail unless you change it.

Another evening wasted and no photos posted.

So that's where things go! Do you realise that if you move a thread, all subscriptions to it are lost. If I see a new thread of interest, I will often subscribe to it so I get notified of new posts. If it then gets moved, I won't hear anything from it again.

Has happened again and again to me.

Can't a way be found to preserve those subscriptions?

As the originator of the Australian Coopers thread, it would have been nice to be asked if I minded the thread title being changed. I agree it was needed, having become an general discussion rather than on one car as originally posted, but would have preferred Terry Wright's suggestion of 'Discovering Australian Coopers' ( a change of only three characters) to the one it attained.

I was away for a few days and noticed it had been moved to Historical Research - I debated whether to put it there when I first started it, but decided on the general forum because I have come to regard Historical Research as the kiss of death to many an interesting thread. Are there any stats on visitor numbers vs the main forum?

I had no idea until I just read this that it had actually been deleted for a while!

I strongly support the concept of 'no fluff', but the fact is there are any number of Historical Research threads that I would regard as kite-flying exercises that would probably do better in the general forum; many of them being started by one person. Whilst there are some contributors to TNF who post nothing but fluff (too many of them Australian I note, sadly), and it was annoying to have a discussion on railway gauges and trailer plugs, I can put up with a bit of that if more members are reading the thread and contributing something useful.

I usually advise thread-starters when I change the placement or title of their thread but, with confusion in this instance, didn't

'Discovering' would have worked earlier in the thread, but it had seemed to stray into other area by the time the name-change was made

As regards the difference between the main Forum and the HR sub-forum, it has always been my belief that fewer people might visit Historical Rsearch, but they're the right people

And yes, some of the topics recently have been a little fluffy, but they tend to disappear pretty quickly

Unfortunately, I think it is often the other way round. I am still not convinced that the sub-forum is a good idea.

PS That is because there is no hard and fast line between the 2 categories so you have to look in both. That being the case it would be better to have everything in the one place

Just a few things?

Does anyone get delayed email notifications? or multiple postings? when someone starts a new thread I get emailed twice about it. But also the other week I got 2 months worth of weekly email updates turn up in my inbox! anyone else had this?

I have sort of drifted away from this site (though I have missed it) but every time I come back to browse it does seem to be mostly threads on people that have sadly passed away so it seems to resemble a memorial board than anything else. It is sad and puts everything into perspective but you sort of feel your intruding on a closed community rather than a racing community (not racing comments note) I suppose that is the nature of having an interest in nostalgia. Would it be better to have a sub thread for the dearly departed - this may have been mooted before - I think Vroom updates one?

Anyway still the best informed and knowledgable forum on the net. I am not technical so it may even be something to do with my email which results in a dearth and glut of email notifications from this place in equal measure but it would be interesting to know if other members get that (I bet it is just ludite me)

But just like there's a 'Like This' button that can be clicked, maybe there should be a 'Dislike This' button also. That way when a post is made of questionable taste then those who consider something as such, can subtly make it known without turning the topic into a farce. Especially one where a fellow enthusiast's passing is concerned.

Tim, I felt exactly as you mention. So I decided upon taking the option above. There's no stopping varying opinions on TNF, but if the line is crossed then it would be handy to bring it to their attention without adding fuel to the fire.

I have today requested that its function be made more clear, Allan. It doesn't have a tooltip (it's just there, with no explanation) and some non-native speakers also seem to mistake it for a reply button - which I think is understandable.

Yes quite - at work I used to write reports for people and in later life people wrote reports for me.

My military friends would have understood the use it's put to here, I suppose.

Can I suggest that if people feel a death is so important that it deserves its own thread rather than inclusion in "Mentioned in Passing", "Gone but not forgotten" etc then the poster should include the information in the title either simply by adding "RIP" or "has died" or similar.

By the same token, a recommendation to anyone starting a thread about a well-known and respected name who is still with us, but perhaps not in the first flush of youth: Please don’t use just their name for the thread title, as some of us reading that thread for the first time will immediately jump to the wrong conclusion and fear the worst. This was well demonstrated in one particular thread a few weeks ago.

Is there a way to change the name of a thread? I started a thread back in 2009 on US manufacturer Francis McNamara, but the title of the thread is misspelt as Frances McNamara - I would like to change it to Francis.
