Trackscapes

Most track-side photography is about captivating the speed, sounds and tremors of fast, loud and sensational motor racing. Yet once in a while I stumble upon a picture that is so silent and eerie that it draws you away from the momentous aspects of the sport into a state in which thought stands still and the senses seem to be switched off.
Here's a postcard sent to the Netherlands in 1952, showing the 'Ring as a mere landscape. There are no cars present, the track looks to be a part of nature, the picture's composition is almost that of a 19th-century oil painting. In all, it's extremely zen, with nothing of the customary brawl and blare that goes with motorsports.
Do you have any similar "trackscape" photographs to share?
I don't want to pose any limitations, so please submit your pictures from every age and with any surrounding, ranging from the Paris-Rouen dust bowl to the Shanghai spaceship, from the Reims flatlands to the Targa Florio villages.

It's odd that you brought this up, Racer.Demon. Ive always wanted to do a big format picture book about racetracks, and for all the photos to be recent shots of the tracks, only empty of people and cars (or as empty as I could make it). Active tracks, abandoned tracks, former road courses (which would be the exception to the "devoid of cars" rule), the lot. I think it would be a fantastic thing.
Plus, it'd give me an excuse to travel around the world to different tracks!!!

Can't find the picture right now, but speaking of the Targa Florio as I did above, I now remember a stunner of a black-and-white picture portraying the rear end of Vaccarella's big banger transfixed against a Sicilian village background, a few people leisurely standing at the road side as Nino comes roaring towards them. So there's a car in the picture, and people too, and still the photo has everything you want from a still life - there is huge clair/obscur contrast, with not a hint of speed in the car, and it looks as quiet and dreamy as any ordinary Sicilian day during the siesta hours. Magnificent...

Thanks, Patrick, that was simply brilliant! And with poetry as well...

Goodwood is now such a beautiful place , - even without the cars it's like walking in to a clean brightly painted and polished version of the 50's or 60's - with the colour turned right up
Lord March has a great eye for making things look good, and thank heavens for it. Anyone who has not yet been to the revival meeting in September - its the best event of the year for me , it's just sensational !

I love the picture that you can link to through this story http://www.autoexpre...ry.php?id=48682
Not for any artistic beauty - but jsut as an appreciation of the scale and wonderful oddness of that Lingotto test track.

That's almost a Bob Ross painting there, with "happy little trees" and all...

Here's one from those I took at the first Revival meeting in 1998...
...I hope it fits in with what you were looking for, Matt.

I don't fancy cutting & pasting links to the photos themselves, but if someone else wants to do so please do so!!!

Mattijs got it right, it's the Ascari Circuit in Southern Spain. The track, all 3.6 km of it, emulates famous sections of other circuits.
Peter,
Outstanding shots of Sitges circuit - check your email.

I very much enjoyed these for their "trackscape" quality:
I should have some similar shots of Brooklands somewhere... Or did I take the video camera on that occasion? :

A beautiful circuit in a lovely setting, this and Goodwood are my favourite British tracks to savour classic racing cars - now if only Mr Palmer would sympathetically restore Brands Hatch.........

It is an unusual view of the small bridge from the firld above. I do not know if the bridge still exists.

And now this one comes up as a url? What is going on around here?
The properties of the image that does not show in your original seems to have a load of garbage attached to the filename?

If I cut/paste the first part it works OK..And the second part...
The image that shows as a link? No positive reason, but it could be something to do with the '&' in the filename..

Quick as anything, then save> replace existing file (do as you wish, if you want to keep the larger file, then just hit 'save as' instead and give it a different name).
Oh, yeah... to get rid of the border, just left click your mouse with the cursor on one corner, drag and drop when you get to the diagonally opposite corner and then edit> crop selection... and save.

Right on that last count, Rob...
And the first was my own fault... I closed the image with [/i] instead of! The BB has inserted its own garbage...
