David Piper painted his 917-010 red prior to the Brads Hatch 1000kms in 1970 and it remained red throughout the 1970 season. The car was repainted in Team Gunston colours for the Kylami 9hrs at the end of the 1970 season. For the following season the car was painted green.

Did Jo Siffert drive it at the Thruxton easter meeting 1971? seem to remember it being Pipers, if true it was painted all white a sort of matt finish i recall !.

12 April 1971 Piper car raced by Siffert to 1st. Changing from red to green would be better achieved by going to white or white primer. You might assume it was 010, but who can be sure?

David Piper & his trusty mechanic, "Stubbs" at Goodwood yesterday. DCN told me that his garage was gutted by fire last week without the loss of any vehicles, but he lost "lots of stuff" according to Doug. :(

David told me on Saturday that when Porsche were having all that aerodynamic trouble with the 917 he lent them his Lola T70 for 3 weeks, after which the 917 was much improved. I didn't know that.

The following posted by DCN on the "Porsche 917 (Festival of Speed)" thread earlier today:

Just a few days previously - late in the afternoon - a serious fire had broken out in David's garage building in which he keeps and prepares his cars. By the time it had been quelled a considerable stock of Ferrari and Porsche wheels, many valuable spares and much memorabilia from his remarkable career had been destroyed. Fortunately, apart from singeing and a melted windscreen, the cars survived as an area of the building's asbestos-panelled roof had collapsed and vented most of the heat to atmosphere. David did not mention any of the above unless prompted...just another bump in the road... It appears that vibration from contract work nearby may have disturbed electrical wiring within old conduit throughout the building.

Just a minor point, Giraffe, old chap - Is it really necessary to repost one's own photographs (splendid, though they are) so close together within a thread?

Appreciated, Tony. With so many large pics on the threads these days, they take an age to load up, particularly for those who are not on broadband.

It was always a treat to see David Piper at Killarney in Cape Town in some of his legendary cars. I took some pics of him in his Porsche 917 and Ferrari 330 P4, which can be seen :

David is in the middle of some Porsche Centre events, for the launch of the new GTS

Some of these have been with Richard Attwood and the others with Tim Harvey, last night I attended the East London OPC event with DP and TH

A great evening, David had his original 917k there (010) and regailed us with many stories, he is fascinating to listen to and had he not beeen constrained by timeI think we would still be talking now!.
I was also priviliged to speak to him and Liz after the event for 15 minutes or so, fasinating listening to DP and Liz is a lovely lady who is just as knowledgable about the cars

Mr. Piper has told me that he once raced here in Hungary "at a support race at one of the early GPs there". Does anyone happen to have any more details about this race? Thanks a lot in advance.

To put you out of your misery, the venue was Longford March 1960 and he is with Joe Robinson co owner of Leeton Motors down there with there D type Jaguar with Frank Matich to drive.
They are probably discussing the purchase of the 2.5 Lotus 15 from Team Lotus which was soon to change the sports car scene.
David Piper was mentioned prominently in the program, including his recent success in the New Zealand races, but he was not listed in the entries so must have been a late scratching. :)
I cant help with the car in the foreground, but it is not his 16

Just reading this thread for the first time and was thrilled to find John Ellacott's picture of David Piper at Longford. As a Longford historian I have always wondered why he did not compete, given as John said, there wasa profile of him in the program, but not in the entry list. The LMRA minutes discussed his competing, so clearly the intention was there. I have never found any explanation for why he did not race. To now know that the man himself was at Longford makes me think there must have been a car problem - was the Lotus 16 still in Australia by then?

Great thread by the way - lovely man, and should we all have his ability and enthusiasm when we are 80!
