Markus Höttinger was the innocent victim of someone else's accident at Hockenheim, when the rear wheel from Derek Warwick's Toleman landed on him at speed.

Hans-Georg Bürger died as a result of injuries received in an accident at Zandvoort, when he was struck on the head by a catch fencing pole.

Both drivers were wearing Simpson 'Star Wars' helmets. After Bürger's accident, his friend Marc Surer refused to carry on wearing his.

Much to my annoyance, I can't find the cockpit shot I took of Höttinger at Thruxton.

Markus Höttinger was killed at Hockenheim. Dereck Warwick crashed into the barriers and lost a wheel. Unfortunately, the wheel hit Höttinger on his head. He died minutes after the impact, his car virtually undamaged.

Hans-Georg Bürger died at Zandvoort that same year when he ran into the catch-fencing at the warm-up lap and hit a pole that broke his helmet.

A little off topic, but very relevant.

Simpson, nor any other helmet maker for that matter, could design a helmet capable of preventing injury in the two accidents mentioned.

Minutes after the impact???? So did he carry on for a lap then? Or did he stop and was OK for a little bit like Mark Donohue? Or was he knocked out and crash in a similar way to Tom Pryce?

I've just looked at the Ian Taylor thread where it mentions a Tiga Formula Atlantic car and this has stirred some memories at the very back of my head which say to me that Burger died at the wheel of a Tiga Formula 2 car - am I imagining this?

I have seen a photo of Burger driving the car because I interviewed the guy who was the third partner in the company (e.g. not Tim Schenken or Howden Ganley) and he lent me his photo album for a few weeks. Very interesting, for example he also built up the Amon F1 car, ISTR, as there were photos of this under construction too. Sadly, I gave the album back without scanning any of the non-Lotus 49 photos...
