There seems to be some confusion about some hillclimbs in the french Vosges at the Ballon d'Alsac

I have hillclimbs at the Lac Sewen or Ballon d'Alsac

	   1965 CC de Sewen

	   1966 CC de Sewen

24.Sep 1967 Sewen Lac Ahlfeld Heini Walter Porsche 910

1967 CC Ballon d'Alsace Christian Poirot Porsche 906

13.Oct 1968 CC Ballon d'Alsace 8.85KM Pillon Brabham BT 21

	   1969 CC Ballon d'Alsace 8.85KM Pillon Brabham BT 21	8:08,9 93,516km/h

24.May 1970 CC Ballon d'Alsace During practice two people were killed It's not clear if the race took place

26.Jun 1971 CC Ballon d'Alsace Guy Frequelin	Dangel 1600

11.Jun 1972 CC Ballon d'Alsace Henry Porsche 910 #027

17.Sep 1972 CC de Sewen Henry Porsche 910 #027

This is what I know about the location:

Ballon d'Alscac is a mountain in the south of the Vogesen ca. 25 km north of BELFORT. There is a little lake near the village of Sewen. I think the race was from Sewen up the hill along the D466.
And there are two other Ballon's - Le Grand Ballon and Le Petit Ballon and they are are along the Route de Cretes. The Ballon d'Alsac is a little bit southwest of them. The road (D466) goes from Masevaux up to Lac de Seven ( there I think was the Start of the race) up to the summit Ballon d'Alsac. There you can go to St Maurice s-Moselle and into the Voges or you go down to Giromagny and to Belfort.

As you see all is confusing.

Where took the race place?
Where the two races at the same hill ?

Who can clear it up?

I've looked up all those dates in the relevant Yellow Books. The only ones which appear there are the two 1972 climbs, which are described as:

June: Ballon d'Alsace. Organiser: ASA de Franch-Comté in Montbeliard.

September: Sewen-Lac d'Alfeld. Organiser: ASAC d'Alsace in Strasbourg.

There's also a map of Ballon d'Alsace, but just to add a complication, it says the hill record was held by Jacques Joliat in a Brabham BT30, set in 1971!

This description might help:

We drove from Dolleren through Sewen, and on up to a man-made lake, Lac d'Alfeld, where we parked the cars and took a stroll out onto the dam. From Lac d'Alfeld, we continued up to the local high point, Ballon d'Alsace, where we once again got out and walked.

Source: http://www.autumnlea...ke98/Sep20.html

I'll see if I can tie the Ballon d'Alsace map to a road map, but it appears to start on a straight, so it may very well begin at the dam. Perhaps at the finishing point of the other one? Looks like two separate courses on the same road to me.

Well, it would seem that the Sewen-Lac d'Alfeld must have been run on a section of the D466.

The Ballon d'Alsace seems to have taken place at the top of the minor road which cuts off the D466 to the north just short of the lake. Sewen is just off this map to the east.

Hugo, V2

Looking at my records I notice a few question marks!

At present I have the Ballon D'Alsace as

08/10/67 Poirot (Porsche 904)
23/09/68 Pillon (BT21)
08/06/69 Pillon (BT21)
24/05/70 Joliat (BT23)
28/05/71 ?? Henry (907)??? or now 26/06/71 Frequelin (Dangel) or probably Joliat (BT30)!!
11/06/72 Henry (Porsche 910)

For Sewen- Lac D'Alfeld- ASAC Alsace:-
26/09/65 Poirot (904)
10/10/66 Poirot (904)
24/09/67 Walter (910)
29/09/68 Troendlin (Alfa Romeo GTA)
1969 Not held?
20/09/70 Roussely (Alpine Renault A110)
1971 Not held?
17/09/72 Henry (910)

Cote de St Maurice- ASAC Vosgien:-
07/09/69 Henry (A110 1.44)
1970 ???
05/09/71 Frequelin (Dangel)
1972 ???

I, too, would appreciate clarification.

John

1968 Ballon d'Alsace should be Sept 22nd - ASA Franche-Comté

No confirmation on any others except 1972 in Yellow Book calendars though.

1968 Sewen - I can confirm Sep 29th

1969 Sewen-Lac d'Alfeld - in calendar for Sep 21st

1970 Sewen - I can confirm Sep 20th

1971 Sewen-Lac d'Alfeld - in calendar for Sep 12th

Race names as quoted!

The ASAC Vosgien doesn't appear in the Yellow Book until 1970, so no details for 1969. "St Maurice-La Ballon d'Alsace" is shown in the 1970 calendar as Sep 27th (my birthday!). For 1971 it moved to Sep 4/5th as "St Maurice-le Ballon", but I can find no trace of it in the 1972 calendar - nor of any event run by the ASAC Vosgien come to that!

So it seems that there are 3 race up to the summit of the Ballon d'Alsace
--- Sewen - Lac Alfeld
--- Course de Cote Ballon d'Alsace
--- St Maurice-La Ballon d'Alsace

I copied from the Michelin Map the region of this summit.
Posted Image
and you see there tree road up to the hill are theese the three races ?
Ok we have Sewen Lac Alfeld
this is definitiv the D466 (east of summit) Masevaux - Dolleren - Seven - Lac d'Alfel - Ballon d'Alsace
and we have St Maurice-La Ballon d'Alsace
this seems to be the D465 from the north St Maurice s. Moselle up to the Ballon d'Alsac
and we have the Ballon d'Alsace
is this the road D465 from Giromagny ( in the South) up to the Ballon d'Alsace ?

so I think the first two are verified but ...

John,

I just can add

28 May 1972 CC de Saint Maurice Henry Porsche 910 #027

to your list.

and I ve checked my sources for the 1971
In the book 1895-1995 Un Siecle de Grands Pilotes Francais by M.Louche Frequelin is given first at CC du Ballon d'Alsace with his Dangel 1600 but there was no mention of a win at St.Maurice so I think your quote is correct - he won the St.Maurice- Ballon d'Alsace

so long

Ah - looks like I misidentified Ballon d'Alsace! It's actually that very twisty section of the D465, up to where it joins the D466. On this map, it leaves the D465 at the final hairpin and continues along the unclassified (yellow) road, finishing at the D466. The start is a few hundred metres off the map to the south.

I have just found this thread - led by Andrew's discovery of it. I guess I wasn't paying attention to French hillclimbs back in 2005!

With the help of a large pile of Echappement, I'm trying to construct a list of all the French hill climb events each season from 1967 onwards and am finding it very difficult. The main reason is there is not always a match between the events Echappement say are coming up and the ones they then report on. Also, events can have one or two different names. Also, I can't always figure out which events cout towards the National championship and which are federal events. Also ... I speak rubbish French!

For 1974 onwards, Echappement makes this a lot clearer but the period 1969-1973 is really confusing.

Have any of you guys already done this sort of research? Can we swap notes?

Many thanks

Thanks very much for this Vitesse.

Ampus (19 Mar) is a curious omission from the Yellow Book as it took place and was a round of the European series too.

Of the ones you've added, Soissons (9 Jul) must have been postponed to 17 Sep, Mt Revard (21 May) must have been postponed to 25 Jun and Millau (9 Jul) is Millau-le-Buffarel.

I also recognise Bellegarde (13 Aug), Gourdon (28 Oct) and Cannes (28 Oct) as regular events so presumably they were cancelled in 1973. In the case of Gourdon and Cannes, maybe winter came early.

Thanks for those results Andrew. I'll add d'Aubazine to my list.

Hugo has also sent me a spreadsheet of his winners list for the 1950s and 1960s and I'll fill whatever gaps I can.

Hi Allen

I dont know if you know that : http://cote.passion..../historique.htm
but maybe it can help for your quest.
(Sorry it is in french, but we are speaking about french hillclimb) ! :)

Thanks Andrew

22 May 1972 was a Monday and 24 May a Wednesday so I think I'll go with 21 May for all those events. Montseny and Cesana-Sestriere weren't French of course but I'll add St-Romain, Chateau du Loir and Corsavy. Corsavy was a regular event and St-Romain rings a bell but Chateau du Loir is a new one.

Hi

Everything about French hillclimbs is in French (except the English Wikipedia page I started and was a bit of a disaster) but I don't let that put me off.

I have seen that site but it only gives a very brief summary of each season and I intend to cover every major event in detail. The information it does have comes from a paperback book Les Rois de la Montagne.

Thanks

Allen, you are down to very low key events : most of those unknown to you are to me too, and a lot of those you knew of I did not (did I mention I am french ?). To get the ball rolling, that should be Sancey-le-Grand on august 17.

Do you remember me saying I'd had fun working out where some of these were? Well, I found out that I could do this:

Map of Les Courses de Côtes Françaises.
(Be patient, it's quite slow)

It's just a first experiment and the locations of some tracks could well be wrong (and ones that are right will be imprecise) but I'd appreciate any comments.

There are still many that I can't locate, such as Aix-Saint-Antonin, Angoulème, Anguille, Antamarchi, Arry, Aspin, Avernes, Bachellerie, Belleau, Bergeraçois, Caunet, Centuri, Charade, Clermont, Col Bayard, Col de Bellevue, Colombiers, Coursac, Échelette, Espalion, Etratat, Ferrier, Forêt de Hez, Gergovie, Gué-Chervais, Haut-Cantal, Hautes-Vosges, Karland-La Gitane, l’AC Lorrain, La Morte/Alpes, La Nerthe, La Pommeraye, La Roquette, Lachens, Le Gua, Lure, Madone Noire, Minier, Montardier, Montbazillac, Monts du Jura, Murs, Picardie, Poitiers, Printemps, Robert-le-Diable, Saint-Cézaire, Sainte-Anne, Sainte-Baume, Saint-Paul, Saint-Pierre, Sancerrois, Sandurand, Sartène-St-Damien, Schalkenthal, St-Dominique, St-Germain, Teghime, Valcherie and Valliquières.

Allen, or anyone else, can you perhaps date these French hillclimbs?

1970 Remiremont
1970 Turckheim (Trois-Epis)
1971 Bellegarde
1972 Saint Maurice - 28 May and/or 21 September (were there two events ?)

Incidentally, I'm also looking for the dates of these events:

1969 Rallye de Lorraine
1971 Rallye de Printemps
1972 Circuit de Vosges - or Rallye de Vosges ?
1972 Rallye de Lorraine
1972 Slalom de Malbouhans

Hope someone can help, I'm putting together a racelog for a car that interests me greatly.

Dates from Yellow Books, so with the usual caveat that they're unconfirmed:

Allen, or anyone else, can you perhaps date these French hillclimbs?

1970 Remiremont No trace
1970 Turckheim (Trois-Epis) 28 June
1971 Bellegarde 7-8 August
1972 Saint Maurice - 28 May and/or 21 September (were there two events ?) 28 May (21 September was a Thursday)

Incidentally, I'm also looking for the dates of these events:

1969 Rallye de Lorraine 3-4 May
1971 Rallye de Printemps 13-14 February (Strange idea of what constitutes Spring!)
1972 Circuit de Vosges - or Rallye de Vosges ? No trace, but there is a Hautes Vosges hillclimb on 21 May, run by the ASA des Vallées
1972 Rallye de Lorraine 29-30 April
1972 Slalom de Malbouhans No trace

Hope someone can help, I'm putting together a racelog for a car that interests me greatly.
