Sadly I did miss the news about Gerry, what a loss to the sport, what a character and what car control the guy posessed! One of my genuine heroes as a kid and ever since!

Just found a reference to Helmut Kelleners McLaren M20 running a Morand 7.5 turbo Chevy engine at the Norisring in 1973 - which provided him with his 5th blown engine in 4 events at that point !
Later in the year he ran the 917/"20" that Elford and later Muller also raced(the 917-30 hack chassis with adjustable wheelbase) .
Anyone know what happened to the Turbo McLaren project, and indeed the M20 itself after Kelleners obviously gave up the unequal struggle to keep it's engines together?

I am even not sure if turbo engine was used at Norisring (can anybody confirm that?). They used the Morand Turbo engine, previously used by VDS, at Hockenheim 15.7.1973 and it was not used after that. After couple races with 917/30-001 in 1973 Kelleners returned to chassis M20/3 for 1974 season, now fitted with normal aspirated 8.1 litre engine.

didnt mario andretti drive (or was supposed to drive) a turbocharged mclaren in the can am season of 1973?? i do recall a smallarticle on the 73 canam season where that is beeing mentioned. according to that mag the project wasnt followed any further due to the restriction for the turbo cars (especially porsche 917/30) for the 74-season.

Yes, it was raced,but not very far by the sounds of it..... here's the SPORT AUTO report (in rough transalation from German , so apologies if it's not exactly right)

Kelleners engine problems seem remarkable considering the general reliability of McLaren's own engines in the USA. One assumes his engines were at a slightly lower level of tune to the factory team in any case?
I did read (in the Lola T70 book) that almost all european-run Chevy engines suffered from the lower octane of the pump fuel available at the time. Eric Broadley is quoted as saying he never saw a Chevy that didn't show sings of pre-ignition when stripped down.

Interstingly the VDS M8F turbo was track tested/raced by Willie Green in the early 90s and he reckoned it was a pussy-cat to drive , easier than a regular 8.3 litre M8F and it had enormous potential ... and 1300bhp.....

Presume that this may well have been the car's sole appearance in turbo form, it's listed for Hochenhiem (the following race) as retireing with rear suspension failure and then at Misano Helmut takes over the 917-"20" hack that Elford had used to such effect at Hochenhiem.
In 74 the M20 was back, minus turbo and finished every race, winning at the Nurburgring and recording 2nd at Hochenhiem ,Casale and the other Nurburgring event and 3rd at Silverstone and Kassel Calden !
Wonder what suddenly caused such total reliability ?

the driver of the 917-30 is Herbert Mûller, that's the first time I see this car with the number 1 ( normaly it has the number 0)

I think it's the 1974 Casale race as #11 looks like Lella Lombardi in a Lola T282 and that appears to be the only race she did in 74. The only place I have seen full result for this lists Muller as "0" but that could be wrong. #14 could be the similar Lola of either Heinz Schulthess or Manfredini while the red Chevron looks like a B19/21/23 and could be Tondelli who ran a red Chevron around this time.

Unusual photo. I can't recall ever seeing a shot from Casale before for any kind of racing, if indeed thats where it is? Can anyone confirm?

This would be Casale. #14 is definitely Schulthess's Lola, and it's Lombardi in the #11 Jolly Club T282.
I think the Chevron is pasquale Anastasio's (Think that says Anastasio on the nose)

Interesting race numbers though, I though Interserie had season-long numbers per team/entrant at this point.

I know some organisers had a real bee in their bonnet about local newspapers and magazine printing entry lists in the week before an eventh - and thus losing them programme sales on the day! So they often renumbered at the last minute... for example It happened in the Brussells F1 GP in I believe 1962.
The number stuck over Kelleners regular #3 certainly looks like a last minute addition.

to my knowledge the first book on this series..??

and in response to a question from Michael Oliver, he followed up with:

There are yearly summaries AND each race and every heat has a result table including the DNFs (position,time, average speed, entrant ,FL, practice position and time ,where known ,but no chassis numbers).
But no entry lists as such. Furthermore each year has a run-through the participating cars..

Wonderful photos Alan, and man the memories this one brings up.

I saw Herbert race his 512 many times in the States, in the Can-Am in I believe 1971 and 1974. Very memorable character and one hard driver. Got everything out of his cigars as well.
