Roger waters also played in Magny Cours (2005)

In 1970 a rockfestival was staged at Mantorp Park in Sweden. Among the acts was Canned Heat and Chuck Berry.
The festival was no success, 50000 people was expected and less then 3000 turned up.

Perhaps it was the thought of having to use festival toilets along with Chuck Berry's proclivities. ;)

.. isn't there already a similar thread somewhere on TNF?

Anyway, Crystal Palace race circuit in South London had a permanent concert bowl on the inside of the track. In fact it is still there - of course sadly the track isn't. In 1971 I saw concerts with Pink Floyd, The Faces, Yes and Elton John.

There was also concert planned for Crystal Palace in 1971 which was due to take place after the experimental evening race meeting in June of that year. Unfortunately, atrocious weather resulted in its cancellation. I believe Manfred Mann's Earth Band were due to play. I think I am right in saying that a stage set up near the start/finish line was going to be used as opposed to the nearby concert bowl.

Here is an advertising flyer for a similar concert in 1966. Not a bad lineup - David Bowie, the Walker Brothers and Tom Jones:

Indeed. And Episode Six would have featured the pre-Deep Purple Ian Gillan and Roger Glover.

Some really obscure performers here! Chris Hall and the Torquays released one single in 1966, and were active until 1970. Bobby Thomas and The Beauman were only active from 1965 to 1966, and never recorded. The Blue Beats supported the Rolling Stones on their Australian tour, recorded a couple of singles in 1965, but never really "made it".

Ray Brown's Whispers were the backing band to Ray Brown, and were active from 1964 to 1970. Their lone single, "Jumila", was recorded just prior to this concert. Jimmy Crockett was in a band called Jimmy Crockett and the Shanes in 1965, but I have no information about the Spys. The Mike Allen Group recorded two singles in 1966. I have no information about Untamed.

There was a 2 day Ferrari Race Meeting at Brands Hatch Aug 2002 with a concert on the Sat night. The Stage was in a field outside the circuit, behind the start / finish straight. Appearing were Jools Holland then, after the interval, Eric Clapton. I attended the concert, was working / staying about an hour's drive away but wasn't fussed about seeing the racing.

Purely coincidentally, this was the same weekend that Huntley murdered those 2 schoolgirls in Soham

Going back to '74.....I attended a Rick Wakeman "Journey To The Centre of the Earth" concert at Crystal Palace...1 of the only 3 gigs he did [ the other 2 were elsewhere] back in that album's heyday. I saw him a few weeks ago in Liverpool.when he did a Revisting "Journey...Earth" concert and the tales he told brought back memories. Such as...at Crystal Palace, there was a lake between the stage / band and the audience.....several people, sky high on drugs jumped into the lake to watch......as part of the show were several monsters / dinosaurs that were inflated during the performance and these floated around the lake.......the druggies expressions etc, they thought it was really strong sh*t they were smoking and rushed to get out of the water

Scanning back through this thread, I note that there doesn't appear to have been any mention of the legendary jazz trombonist, motor sport entrant and band leader, Chris Barber, who played after the 1964 British GP at Brands. Remember him fronting the Castrol film about the event, 'Brands Hatch Beat'?

Also notable by it's absence is Transcendental Bob's 1978 gig at Blackbushe  a venue which I believe was used for drag racing once upon a time and more recently by Ron Howard who recreated Fuji on the runway for his epic Rush.

Old Jp was at the California Jam on April 6 1974

Here is my story.

My friends at W.H.Taft High School in Woodland Hills CA brought in that flyer with that guitar race car, we salivated over it.I was sold on going there and then but we all had 'issues' with our parents about going.I was nominated as the driver cuz mom had a station wagon. Not to mention, being a racing fan,I had convinced my dad to get an OMS season parking pass. BOOM I was the man in charge.Minor problem was that Mom had FORBIDDEN me to go so I made sure that her Sister In-Law, my ally when it came to anything against moms wishes, called her over for early 'cocktails&gossip'.

I lifted the spare set of keys from her purse as she left and wrote a note saying I HAD to take the car to help my friend find his lost dog. (yeah right)

Oh I felt so cool, getting ready on Friday night. We met in the school parking lot and there were about 7 of us packed into the Dodge Monaco as we ambled down 101 to the 10. We arrived about 11pm I think and got 'preferred' parking near the main grandstand. Walking over to the line we found people going in already.
So in we went..seems like we had acres of space as we found a central spot just in front and to the right of the mixing platform. Ha..that was easy and we passed around the bota bag with whatever cheap wine was in there and after a while and a few joints of 'commersh' I drifted off to sleep.

I awoke the next morning to the PA being fired up.
The first thing they played on it was Steely Dan 'King of the World' It sounded SO GOOD I was enraptured.

Never ever had I heard fidelity like that.
After the song I stood up and turned around and..I could not see the end of the people…
They literally stretched on as far as my eyes could focus.

HOLY ****..

I immediately had to take a piss. BAD.
Off I trundled, stepping lightly over the throngs and made it to the toilets in about 45 minutes.Getting back was another issue.People didn't mind you leaving but going back was another matter.Surly, stoned and indignant were the reactions I met.At one point I stepped through a group of bikers gang banging a young girl.YOUR TURN KID they said and they pushed me onto this chick who was so out of it her eyes were crossed in several directions. She smiled and promptly threw up all over me. Unperturbed, I soldiered on back to where I thought our encampment was.It took, what seemed like, hours and as Rare Earth started their set I saw a flag that was only a few feet from where we were sitting. As I made it back I stripped off the jeans and borrowed a pair of swim trunks one of the guys had brought along.

I can't remember anything else about the show. I DO remember the traffic jam on the way out was monumental. Mom was really cool on our arrival back home..Seems she knew all along.

Not a festival, but Pink Floyd and David Bowie both played at Brands Hatch in June 1967 at a Radio London sponsored club meeting.

I believe Pink Floyd were at Brands Hatch Sunday 18th June 1967, but did not play.

According to 'Echoes -The Complete History of Pink Floyd' by Glen Povey (by far the best source on information of Pink Floyd concerts) it is headed:  PUBLIC APPEARANCE

Radio London Motor Racing & Pop Festival, Brands Hatch Race Track, Brands Hatch, England

Pink Floyd participated in a pop musicians parade in open top cars around the track with Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick & Titch, David Garrick, The Moody Blues, and Tristan-The Seventh Earl of Cricklewood. The event was compared by Radio London DJ's Mark Roman and Ed Stewart and featured an evening Bikini fashion show and pop concert with Chris Farlowe  & The Thunderbirds, Episode Six and The Shell Shock.

Pink Floyd had been at a concert 'The Ballroom, Dreamland Amusement Park, Margate the night before (Saturday 17th June)

Not exactly a concert , the 1976 European Formula Two race at Thruxton was sponsored by DJM Records . On the day they were represented by singer turned actor Dennis Waterman , best known for his roles in Minder and The Sweeney , and twenties inspired Jazz Band 'The Temperance Seven' who were driven round the circuit on an open-top bus , while they played 'You're Driving Me Crazy' . You don't get entertainment like that at circuits any more !!

I apologise in advance for lowering the tone, but does any body remember, or were at, the BBC Radio 1 Fun Day at Mallory Park in 1975? Not strictly a concert, more a guest appearance day.

Star act were the wonderfully untalented Bay City Rollers who were helicoptered onto the small island in the lake.  What happened next was mayhem. Young screaming girls and mothers with children scaled the banking and ran across the track during the racing and then waded into the lake to try and get to their heroes. I seem to remember the Rollers were bundled back into the helicopter and left promptly.

The day ended in the clubhouse with the Rollers' fans being taunted by the motorsport fraternity with chants of "Rollers are W--kers" led by Gerry Marshall and co.

I remember that Bay City Rollers Mallory Park meeting as I marshalled that day at Devils Elbow...IIRC, we were asked / told to use the extinguishers to try to keep the screaming school girls from running across the track....

I was there, for the racing ( obviously I hope ) and not the Rollers. We knew something wasn't right when we hit the queue on the outskirts of Leicester. And yes , girls and boys did run across the track during a race and dived into the lake to get close to the tartan terrors . We Were Not Amused .

Here’s a good description of the chaos created by the Rollers fans, from an earlier thread:

Hmmm.....the Mallory Park 'Fun' Day. I was one of the close to 50,000 people that was at Mallory that weekend, working for Arian Automotive, who ran a number of Mazda RX3 cars in the Radio 1 Prodsaloon Championship. It was hardly a fun day I can assure you. One of the cars I was looking after was the Cozy Powell Hitachi entry. Of the huge crowd very few were motor racing fans. Most were screaming girls there to catch a glimpse of the Tartan Terrors, the Bay City Rollers, the 70's equivalent of a 'Boy Band'. There were also other celebrities involved in the day. The thousands of girls around started off as being a delight bearing in mind I was in my late teens at the time.... The Island in the middle of the lake had been converted for the day into a stage, and the band were supposed to play, or at least appear at some stage, and the DJs were doing their thing there. All the top DJs of the day wrere there, Tony Blackburn, David Hamilton, DLT, John Peel, plus of course Noel Edmunds, who ran a 3 litre Capri in Castrol colours that year. I seem to recall that the 'Rollers' had been deposited on the island by helicopter

The Formula Ford race was running full bore when the band appeared on the island, at which point sheer hell broke out as hundreds (maybe dozens but a lot ) of tartan clad crazy schoolgirls proceeded to run across the track, MID RACE, totally oblivious of the cars racing by. Like lemmings they hurled themselves into the lake to tried to swim to the island. I havnt been to Mallory for nearly 30 years so, but im sure the island had a control tower on it. The band and others barricaded themselves in the tower as scuba divers in wet suits and flippers were flapping around, and with what seemed to be hordes of police were trying to round up these girls. Part of the entertainment was a speed boat that was used to convey the DJs to the island . One of the clearest memories I have of the proceedings was this speedboat cruising around the lake at this point, being driven by a Womble in full regalia, whilst Tony Blackburn was sat looking every bit like the Queen, waving regally to the crowds.

Racing was naturally stopped, and when control was regained all those involved on the paddock side of things began to see the funny side of it. I know there were quite a few injured in the melee, none seriously I believe. By the time we had loaded up the traffic was as bad as Silverstone on GP day at its worse, compounded by thousands of pedestrians walking in the roads. By this time I was getting very peeved trying to escape the circuit driving one of the transporters, trailer behind at barely walking pace literally bumping pedestrians out of the way to try and clear a path. The reason I was in a big hurry to escape...... I had tickets to see some real music. Led Zepellin were playing at Earls Court that night. My next challenge that night was trying to find a parking spot in Earls Court to fit 40+ft of transporter and trailer. Altogether one of the more unique and certainly most memorable days motoracing I have had.

Now if anyone has pictures of that day.....

I’ve always treasured the late John Peel’s description of the day:

Zeltweg is quite usual venue during tours of artists like Pink Floyd and Rolling Stones.

Once I saw a concert of long-lasting Hungarian rock band Omega at, you'd guess it, Hungaroring.

You are quite correct in all you say. I was there that day and still have the programme for the event. Me and my pals stayed on to watch Episode Six, but departed prior to the appearance of Chris Farlowe as we were worried about how late the special buses to Swanley Station would run.

The Eastern Creek circuit in Sydney was the venue in the 1990's for a number of rock concerts and festivals including Guns N' Roses, Bon Jovi, Pearl Jam, the Alternative Nation Festival in 1995 which featured Nine Inch Nails, Faith No More and Lou Reed as well as the Colossus 2 dance festival in 1997 which featured Italian group Cappella.

That Pearl Jam concert was my first ever gig. It took a long time before I went to a gig that topped it

A festival was held at Oran Park over the Australia Day long weekend in 1970, featuring 26 bands playing over three days. Organisers expected 20,000 spectators to attend over the three days - only 50 people turned up on the first day and then 100 on the second day. More than 30 police and security were on hand for any crowd trouble - the only trouble was a young girl dancing topless. 'The Biz', 29 January 1970, p.5

As a massive fan, I instantly recognised the gig as being featured in the "Led Zeppelin DVD", (rel 2003) but in colour and set to what seems the studio version of Immigrant Song. Some of the press stuff shown in the video is also on the the DVD.

I see I'm posting this under Lee's mention of Robbie Williams, Jimmy Page will not be impressed (they live beside each other and are involved in a planning dispute) :rotfl:

Though I no longer appreciate live music, watching Bonzo at work is always a pleasure :smoking:

And though it gets little coverage in the video, it's always amazing how narrow Oz tracks are for someone reared on American short track racing. A few years ago I researched racing at the Showgrounds and other facilities down under, and there are a few videos available showing Midgets and even Sprints racing on those tracks, blimey! A good show usually with the American pros starting at the back, and quite literally threading their way through the field with barely a foot on either side of the car!  Recommended watching!

The concert was broadcast on TV within the track and I am lucky enaough to live close enough to the track to pick up the broadcast.  I have it on VHS tape.

The 2023 Las Vegas GP so nearly catered for you and I by dipping into the seventies, for a performance by, er, Donny Osmond. (I did say nearly).

I got to see ZZ Top play at this year's FOS ball and then signed on Billy Gibbons, Frank Beard and Eric Clapton in the Music Room of GW House the next day. It was an amazing experience as Eric is my all time hero of heros and he was an absolute gent, sat me down with Billy and Frank and we all just chatted music and motor racing for half an hour.

Also @JonPollack - Did you attend the WHT school yourself? I attended the William Howard Secondary School in the north of England, named after the same Mr Taft!

Different taste I guess... The Best was one of Tina's best and it was sung directed at Artyon who was on stage with her just a few hours after after winning the race, his last ever race win.

I think "concert at the track" falls into two categories. Firstly, concerts that were organised as part of the entertainment at a race meeting, and, secondly, concerts that took place within the grounds of a race circuit but were not in any way connected to racing.

Within the first category, something that hasn't been mentioned, are the post racing Chris Barber Jazz Band performances that took place at Brands on several occasions at big meetings - most notably the 1964 Grand Prix. Chris himself was of course a motor sport enthusiast and ran cars for a few of seasons.

The 2023 Las Vegas GP so nearly catered for you and I by dipping into the seventies, for a performance by, er, Donny Osmond. (I did say nearly).

The threat of being within 100 miles of a Decomposed Offal concert becomes reason 102 for avoiding Las Vegas. After reading that post it took a strong dose of Howlin Wolf to recover.

.

Also @JonPollack - Did you attend the WHT school yourself? I attended the William Howard Secondary School in the north of England, named after the same Mr Taft!

I did …
1973-1975.
It was a wonderful time in California back then.
Girls were up for fun and racing was everybody’s first love.
We even picked up a hitchhiker on the way down to Cal Jam @OMS. She was the tight pants hottie of I-10 we came to find out.Her name was Tamara.
Pronounced Tam Are ah. Like in the Bible.
Not Tamarrah.
