LeGrand Mk 7 recently found by Butch Gilbert
Car had been placed in storage since 1982 before Butch Gilbert purchased it.

This car has recently been sold to John Boxhorn of Wisconsin and hopefully we will see it racing in the Vintage F-5000 soon.

I saw this advertised on eBay but the vendor wouldn't give me any info about it. Would John be willing to tell me the history associated with it?

My best guess would be Thruxton, but I would be happy to take a second opinion :-)

John has sent these photos and will keep us posted as the restoration progresses. He is thinking of painting it Yellow to match his Tiga S 2000. I think that would look great.

Thank you Jerry.

Here is another view from the BRIC. The car will be raced next season by Mike Argetsinger.

This Le Grand was at Watkins Glen and Road America, parked next to our RIAM Gurney Eagle Mk 5 No. 7 . Beautifully restored and for sale, had Sam Posey's name on side as the car he qualified on pole at Mosport in 68. Sam indicated it was very scary to drive. It is a marginally built and early designed FA5000 that unfortunately would not be a very
competitive machine in current F5000 vintage racing. The drive train and uprights along with solid rotor brakes would not allow for fast reliable laps.

Rex Ramsey in 1969 in the Mk7 LeGrand with better engine and High wing. Rex Ramsey and Max Balchowsky made this motor. They built it at Max's shop Hollywood Motors. The wing and wing mounts were built by Jack Smith and Rex Ramsey. This engine was originally in Rex's first Formula 5000 car called a Wadsworth. Rex believes this is at Riverside.

Dr. Lou Sell a very good guy and dentist was badly burnt I believe in an Indy type Eagle at I think Riverside. That is why he couldn't run the LeGrand and Rex Ramsey took over. Red LeGrand was as good as they come as a craftsman and a person. He wanted to make a car similar to the Radical DSR for people to be able to get involved in racing at a reasonable price. He was way ahead of his times. Lou Sell was the 1968 US Formula A or 5000 Champion driving an Eagle. Dick Smothers of the comedy Team sponsored him. Dick Smothers also drove a Formula B type car in the series in 1968. It was a Brabham Ford.

photos lent to site by Glenn Miller

Hi Jerry, a minor description correction for this photo of Dr. Lou Sell at the back wheel, FYI, this is not an Eagle , more than likely was the Le Grand or a Lola, as it does not have full monocoque tub. Interestingly enough there is an Eagle in the background and it is my Milestone Racing Eagle Mk5 No. 7. Not sure where this photo was taken, probably Riverside raceway. My ole Eagle is now owned by Doug Magnon, president of the Riverside International Automotive Museum in Riverside, Ca. It has been faithfully restored by master mechanic Bill Losee and has been competing successfully in vintage F5000 since 2008. RIAM plans to field the Eagle for the 2011 season, I look forward to driving it again this year.

Harvey Lasiter, crew chief is in tee shirt and that is Jack Douglass in yellow shirt.

Tony I am always glad to be able to post a photo of my friend Lou Sell. He is a great guy and was also a very worthy F-5000 Champ.

Tony also: Glenn Miller allowed me to use his great Photo of Lou Sell inspecting the rear of the F-5000 car. It is me who assumed it was his Eagle. You have a keener eye then me. After looking at the picture I believe it is a Lola. The # 8 Lola in 1969 was Ron Courtney. Maybe Lou Sell was just checking it out.

John has so far acquired a fresh VDS 305 engine for the car. He has also discovered he needs more shoulder room in it. He is planning on making the drivers area a little wider and replacing the Airheart brakes with Wilwood type brakes.

Allen: John Boxhorn hasn't been able to find any chassis number plate with the car. The rollbar had 33-228 stamped on it. That is the only ID numbers he sees on the car.

33-228 is a San Francisco Region number probably issued in 1972 or 1973. That suggests the Mal Patterson car (see http://www.oldracing...egrand/mk7.htm). Can you tell me who John bought it from - it might be possible to put together an ownership trail.

Engine for John Boxhorn's LeGrand Mk 7
This engine had 501 hp at 7,800 rpm. It was built for John by Chuck Cornelison at VDS Racing engines in Indianapolis.

As far as John Boxhorn has been able to figure out the car was with Mal Patterson until December of 1973, it was then sold to Ken Owen by M.S. Patterson. Ken Owen sold the car to Skip Pack of Hollister, Ca in 1977 or 1978. Butch Gilbert bought the car in October of 2009 and the car was sold to John Boxhorn in October of 2010.

It's said to be chassis 003 and have had a first owner Gene Forsthofel (Overland Park, KA). I'd be surprised if Forsthofel was the first owner but he may have been a later owner. I know White raced it at Whenuapai 1995 so it's been in NZ a while.

Here's a photo from that Whenuapai meeting.

Wonderful images, Jerry.

I spent much time in real race shops like this, as a sign guy, so this is very nostalgic.

Thanks. :)

Ted: They aren't against upgrading braking systems in Vintage racing in the States. It is legal and considered a safety improvement.

John Boxhorn is also using better tubing for the frame cross tubes. Thicker and stronger material.

I recall Skip Pack, he autocrossed the LeGrand at the Salinas airport & at Plesanton Fairgrounds in California. The car handled great & he did very well with it. The brake rotors were maybe 10" diameter x 3/8" & looked like steel, not cast iron.

Tom thinks this was at Willow Springs

Here are Tom's thoughts on this photo:
" Looks like Willow Springs and it’s early on with the cars configuration. The exhaust is still high and I haven’t cut the nose to take the lift out of it. It is though the second paint job in black and yellow/orange with a Bob Joehnck motor w/o Jackson F.I. instead of a 4 barrel Holley."
