I think its because when I scanned it the scanner cover was not fully closed?? Mike

Ah, a happy accident! You'll just have to remember to do it next time as well.

I'm still not sure that we have even scratched the surface of the number of automotive subjects rendered in this way Tom!. (Well, actually maybe a small dent has now appeared in said catalogue of works!).

I know, werks. I have a list of something like 3500 cutaways in my files ... or whatever one would call them. Probably half of the subjects here aren't in my list.
Have added a ton of aircraft and automotive subjects online recently. Quite an expansion when I had not expected to see anywhere near that many new items.
Makes this a real treasure.

I have not posted for a while now, but rather just followed this thread with astonishment. By now this has to be the ultimate reference for cutaways available anywhere. I want to thank you all and especially Tony for his expert opinions.

I feel priviliged to be able to comunicate in a forum with people like Tony Mathews and Doug Nye.

Thanks for posting this link. I do aircraft cutaways and haven't seen his work before. By the shear numbers of illustrations listed on the site, he looks to be a very busy artist.

Thanks, werks. You and everyone else have been contributing so long and so much that when I finally got a new scanner I thought I would help out. I have a pretty big library, so there is lots more to come.

Glad you like it! The 1964 Bluebird came from "High-Performance Cars 64/65". There are lots of good cutaways in this series of annual magazines published by Autosport. I believe that the series ran from the 1954-55 edition to 1965-66.

Is that some sort of air brake on the rear bodywork behind the wheel?

Yep, I think the official engineering blurb describes it thus "'Aerodynamic' brakes at the rear which provide initial retardation" 400mph to 0mph in 60 seconds! (In conjunction with the disc brakes etc)

Charles Hurford is completely new to me and I thought I knew all about the "Autocar" and "Motor" illustrators. Does anybody know anything about him? Can somebody also tell me more about the "Sports Racing Cars" book?

Unfortunately for us all, there is only a very meagre account of Charles Hurford at 'good old' http://www.motoringart.info/3.html, but that is certainly a start. (I'm convinced someone here will probably be able to add to that account in some way). Regarding the book itself, check out Ibsens post and you will find a contents list of the cutaways contained as well as the Isbn and cover.
