Here is an Inomoto from a late Road&Track magazine. It's from the May Issue of 1983. It's an AutoUnion Type C from 1936.
Posted Image
It was printed on two different pages. I tried to splice them as best as possible.

I wouldn't mind a few comments by Tony about why Inomoto's Type C looks so stretched behind the cockpit.
A lost perspective or artistic licence to show as much engine as possible.
Somehow it looks off-balance.

I had a few minutes while waiting for dinner to get ready, so I tried to blend it together a little more.

Well, Tony Masterposter,

I've just come across a little slice of your work, methinks, in this advertisement

That aside, I must say I've completely lost 'control' of this thread. Seems like my life in a nutshell...

Just found these 'sequence' litho's of the original Ilmor Chevrolet line artwork in progress, which may be of interest. The thin lines are ink over the pencil construction work, the blank areas are where the ink lines have been erased to almost invisible, certainly invisible to a litho negative, and the heavier lines and shading indicate areas nearing completion. These tended to be a bit patchy, with no logical progression, if I got bored with stippling I'd do some line somewhere else, or I'd get enthusiastic about a feature and give it the works for an hour or three. I wasn't so picky with colour, greater discipline was called for, and a definite, orderly approach.

What a score !!
Made a short trip into Germany a weekend ago, and bought a stack of magazines at a rummage sale stall.
Not expensive.....and the stack had a some string around it. I was on the way back to the car so grabbed a stack without
considering the contents.
Didn't have time to go through the mags until a few days later............faint !!

A huge A1 size Tony Matthews poster stuck between one of the mags,
It was folded good side out, so the folds were a bit dirty, but I gave Tony's 87 a good wash, and spliced the eight scans

Permit me Tony.......you once posted it's discs on the twin caliper thread,................I'll show the rest of it
Posted Image
Now I am wondering what goodies might have been in the two others stacks that the chap had

Open www.imageshack.us
Look for the browse button, and click on it.
You must of course have the file you want to post on your hard disc and know where it is
So, browse and open the file
At the bottom of the image shack screen you will find a button named “start upload”
Click on it an you file will be uploaded
As soon as uploading is complete, you will see the file shown in a small screen
Above this screen will be 4 links
Right click and copy the text in the link “thumbnail for forums (1) “
Go back to the Autosport forum and open the “add reply” screen
Right click copy/paste the link into the reply screen and send reply
That should do it !

Those Piola drawings were great, every new car launch........every Grand Prix, he would highlight a car and do little
detail drawings of mods and changes.
Fantastic, especially his two or three page coverage after every GP in AutoSprint and Rombo magazine.

I enjoy his current Autosport work as well, although I would dearly love to see a bit more complete cars than just
front wing mods and barge board changes.

Stippling....somehow it may even gain a certain erotical level,......" niveau erotique " the French would call it
when do you still enjoy stippling and when does it start to drive you nuts??
What would your average hourly stipple be Tony?
I mean dot dot dot stipple.... no other tipple

First you have to remember that Inomoto likes to exaggerate and accentuate features, so there is no guarantee that it is completely accurate dimensionally. It does look a bit long, but if you use the 'Allington' method of roughing out a basic layout, a front wheel and tyre in this illustration fits into the space between the rear of the front tyre and the front of the rear tyre just over two times - without a sideview it is difficult for me to check this, but it is probably not far off right. This 'rule' changed over the years with different formulae and changes in wheel size and tyre aspect-ratio.

Secondly, the rear of the illustration is more or less a longitudinal section, there is one thin black line indicating the left hand cockpit edge, otherwise there is nothing to give the car any LH shape or contour. As with the Theo Page illustration, it is easy to lose shape by cutting at an odd angle, or in this case, not showing any bulkhead or piece of bodywork to give width. A cut should serve two purposes - reveal what is underneath, and still indicate the external shape.

What would your average hourly stipple be Tony?

Speed could depend on background music - a funeral march - one dot per second, The Bum of the Flightlbee by Ripyercorsetsoff - why, my hand would be a blurr! It was always a 'pleasure' to stipple tyre sidewalls because it made such a difference to the overall illustration, really bringing it alive - or so I thought. Next in line of Things to Stipple with a Degree of Enthusiasm was any complex cast item, nodules, bulges, cast lettering, etc. Of least interest and maximum tedium was large, gently curving areas such as the sides of plenum chambers, as it took a while, had no relief, but still had to progress from light to dark evenly and consistently.

I used a 0.3 Rapidograph, very occasionally a 0.4, and get stuck in, as I had been practicing since I was about 14 I was quick and accurate. It is astonishing how one misplaced dot can be so obvious when looked at from a different distance than normal working distance - if the bad dot touches two others and leaves a white space where it was meant to be... Quelle horreur! Quick! Scratch out the dot, add one in the right place! Phew! God, no! There's another one!

Dunno about an hourly rate, Marc, but four exposed sidewalls - probably two hours. I can't really remember, and never made a point of counting.

At least one distributer won't fill up with rain-water! There's another cutaway in similar style posted earlier - I haven't got time to check back, as I've skived off work for a warming beveredge and half a packet of Hobnobs - gotta go!

Edited to say:-

Post 2613 - if that was Brian Hatton, I think this must be, too.

Twini Mini article by John Blunsden was published in Sports Car Graphic, but I don't see any credit tot the cutaway artist.

Apparantly John Cooper nearly killed himself testing Twini Mini !!!

Looking at the cutaway again, the tyre shading has some Gordon Bruce about it ! Compare some details with Bruce's 1962 BRM (Sorry haven't had time to clean it yet)

Blimey! That's spooky, almost exactly the same viewpoint as my DB3S!

I think you are right about the Mini, Marc (Minimarc?), it does look like Gordon Bruce.
