Tom - The Stutz Black Hawk looks beautiful. Thanks. I appreciate you filling in the source details that I neglected to provide. It looks as if we're "drinking at the same trough", so to speak. I've only got about 60-80 Sports Car Illustrated(s), so I'll try not to repeat any of your presentations.

The following is a bit of an oddity from SCI January, 1959 - Firebird III GM "dream car". To quote the articles author, Stephen F. Wilder, "...basically it's a circus car. Maybe twenty-three clowns don't come tumbling out when the doors fly open but it's every bit as attention getting - and impractical. But interesting". I hope you think so too. Another project scan - thanks in advance if anyone wants to give it a go. Brian

Had to play with the drawing. Hope no one finds my feeble efforts annoying. But it is a challenge and does pass the time. Thats it. The Blonde, she who must be obeyed, says it time to shut it down for the year.

I'm hoping one of the resident "gurus" could stitch it together, if it is of interest. I feel like I'm an outsider stepping into a private club with this thread. I think I've got quite a few other cutaways that are not represented in the thread, but it seems that they are mostly of this format and I hate to impose on you who are far more accomplished than myself to clean up my mess.
Anyway, thanks for the continuation of the topic, it is absolutely intriguing. Brian

If it is a private club Brian, it's the best because no contributions are due !!
If helping stitch up a cutaway here and there is what it takes to get a good cutaway posted.I'd say come on !!
Welcome !
Started stitching the Stutz but Tom beat me to it :)

So here is the Firebird

There is a bit more pixelation in the rear part because the scan sizes were different

Happy and healthy NEW YEAR to all !!

Marc - Thanks for the effort on the Firebird III. Sorry about the scan size differential - not sure how that happened. Trying to not crease the old magazines with the small scanner platen that I have, I guess. The following is the Alfa Romeo Disco Vollante by LaTourette from Sports Car Illustrated - February, 1961. I've been into 12) SCI's so far and have found approximately 20) cutaways that are not indexed on the thread. Bear with me, I'll continue to scan and post them over time. Thanks for the help by all who stitch them together for me. Brian

I believe a while back Ibsen requested a better resolution scan of Theo Page's Lotus 49. While I'm at it here is Pages Brabham BT19.

Thought I would put a couple of the old cutaways out for the start of the new year ... as if we seem to need an excuse.
This is the Weaver 1500 Formula 1, a design that was never built to my knowledge. It was run as a part of a contest to design the body for the car in the May, 1961 issue of Car & Driver.

Out of the August, 1961 issue of Car & Driver, this is the Dagrada Formula Junior. I think there was a smaller version up on the board previously, but I am pulling all of this stuff so you are just getting them in the sequence they come up in the file. The illustration is signed Emily, and I don't believe that I have seen anything else over this name.

This is a drawing out of Sports Car Graphic, December, 1984. They had discontinued the title, then brought it back for a while in the 80s. The drawing is from the French E.T.A.I. group of the Peugeot 205 Turbo, and I would guess that it was a base for a color illustration, although I don't believe I have ever seen it. Might have, but haven't taken the time to check my listing.

Well, it was an Eastern European effort. They weren't exactly known for quality racecars, or much else, for that matter.
And we had to bring in a Russian to design the Checker, one of the iconic images in US auto history.

Good question. I had thought it was something more unusual than Italian, but did not scan the full article for background. Honestly, not concerned enough to go back and check ...

In compensation for blaming the Eastern Europeans for the Dagrada, I will take a cue from the Gilbern that was posted and put out another John Ferguson illustration ... which just happened to be next up for submission anyway.
This is the Ferguson 4WD P99 Formula 1 project that was published here in the May '63 issue of Car & Driver.

Going to add in another of the James Allington illustrations, which I don't believe I have sent out previously. May have, and, if so, I apologize.
This one is the Elva Formula Junior that was published in the March, 1960 issue of Sports Car Graphic. Again, a really nice study of a classic tube frame car.

I'll have a look, but after I scanned the article way back when, it probably got buried under the next pile of %$&()??//@!!! stuff

Edit,googled some stuff,

Dagrada I 1959 Fiat 103/ Lancia Appia Angelo Dagrada Angelo Dagrada, Milano F
Dagrada I 1960 Lancia Appia Angelo Dagrada Angelo Dagrada, Milano R
Dagrada I 1961 Lancia Appia Angelo Dagrada Angelo Dagrada, Milano

The "I" was in the entry nationality column, the Milano stuff where the "factory" was located.

Please forgive my intrusion - I can draw & I wear glasses, but not the 3D X-ray spectacles that are obviously needed to successfully render cars as beautifully as those depicted in this forum and I am in awe of the technical & artistic abilities of the artists referred in your commentary. I have a copy of Bill Gunston's "Classic World War II Aircraft Cutaways" featuring Max Millar (of Flight magazine) & James Clark (of Aeroplane magazine) which also features some wonderful renderings of the engines used in the various aircraft. In addition, I have cutaways by David Jones, Mike Badrocke, Weal & Aviagraphica along with articles on Clark, Frank Munger & Peter Castle. Most cover aircraft, but all admirably exhibit the genius of a good cutaway artist.

I have taken the liberty of posting two images of steam engines, which, to my mind, deserve to be displayed in any exhibition covering the subject of technical illustration: LNER 2001

Kind regards & keep up the excellent posts.

I like those. The perspective is interesting as it gives a good impression of how big the engines were, although I guess it was maybe to do with the photos they were based on.

I suspect you're the Photoshop wiz - they could do with a bit of tweaking if you have nothing better to do...

I have no idea how much time goes into one of these drawings, but I suspect Clark spent many hours planning, researching & actually drawing them.

Colour, brightness and contrast I tweak using the Vista Image Manager.
I just use Paint to shove the two parts into alignment and then paint-in all the missing pixels.

Marc,
That book "Inside 100 Great Cars" is almost completely cutaway based material. It is put together by Editor David Hodges, and starts with a brief 3-4 paragraph writeup on each car. There is then a double page spread on each of the 100 cars, except for quite a few that actually have an extra page foldout (think Playboy). With those illustrations, there is a brief summary specifications block, and a timeline of the evolution and history of the car.
The artwork has quite a spread of quality from the Tony Matthews and James Allington work, to some other stuff that isn't all that great.
Many of the works have the name removed, so it can be tough to identify some of them.
It does include the following art, all in color:
Allington Aston Martin DB2. (signature removed)
Tony Matthews Auburn Speedster. (signature removed)
Tony Matthews Blower Bentley. (signature removed)
James Alllington Bugatti Type 35. (signature removed) Might be someone else, but don't think so.
James Allington Ferrari Daytona Coupe; 3-page spread.
Tony Matthews Ferrari 250GTO. (signature removed)
James Allington Ferrari 275. (Signature removed, but a piece still there in the tire.)
James Allington Frazer Nash.
Tony Matthews Jaguar SS. (Signature removed)
James Allington Lotus Elan. (signature removed)
Tony Matthews Jaguar D-Type; 3-page spread.
James Allington Triumph TR3.

There are other illustrations that are worth having in a collection, but these are definitely the high point.
For reference, it was published by Chartwell Books, at least the one that I have from 1992 and copyrighted by Marshall Cavendish Ltd.
It came out originally in part as "The Car" in 1984, so it has been floating around out there for a while.
Hope that helps.

I presume that you have quite a selection of similar publications around there yourself. The one that I had always wanted to get for myself was the Lawrence Pomeroy book, The Grand Prix Car. I have the second volume that was published in the 60s as a follow-up, but the initial was always a bit beyond my means.
I do have that Cavara book, which is almost falling apart, but is is really impressive stuff from the Italian Auto Club.
Also, picked up the Yoshihiro Inomoto book on cutaway drawing. Wish I could read Japanese ... it might be a much better book, but it is pretty cool.
Anyone else have their favorite publications?
I have quite a few things with aircraft illustrations, as well, but will deal with some of the cars here ...

I do have that Cavara book,
Tom West

I have far too much to handle.
Ludvigsen's Porsche (signed by the man himself) sold off very well !
Sold the Pomeroy books 1 & 2 which I had from my 20th, along with the 3rd volume by LJK Setwright to a TNFer a few years ago.
The Cavara is the next to go, but I am buying new material (old mags actually) all the time.

Then of course there is still a loft to clear out 7 x 4 metres stacked about 1 metre high !
The wife thinks I'm nuts, but then she goes to her art room, sees all the stuff she has, and quiets down.

Oh....I haven't even mentioned my aviation magazines and books yet, have I ?

Haven't really sold off much of the cutaway material that I have accumulated, although I cut back about 2/3 of the various books that aren't related to cutaways or have some special reference material. I actually got rid of a full trash gondola that was brought around by the city a few years ago ... absolutely filled to the top with old magazines that had absolutely no real worth. Being in the modelkit business, I was subscribing to about 35 magazines at one time, so I had at least a couple of decades of that stuff that I would never look at again.
I also had a ton of old Haynes manuals that I had borrowed to copy the cutaways on the covers ... wish I had done something better to get something usable from that little effort ...
Didn't throw them away, but traded them to Autobooks for a couple of diecast cars ...

I'm trying to post images that don't need to be stitched together. I've been cross checking the numerous cutaways I'm locating and making sure that they do not appear on the page 76 index. Would it be better for me to direct those interested to the magazine by name, issue, cutaway subject and page number? That way I don't create work for you guys, unless you deem it to be worthy. Thanks, Brian

Thanks Brian, that's neat. It has a certain '58ish look about it! This thread moves on at such a pace that it was a shock to see how far the index had dropped back - "Oi! Index! Keep up!" - that I've bumped it.

Ibsen...thanks for the summary.

I have some more Hondas to add. Two different versions of the R1300 race car, powered by the air-cooled motor from the Honda 1300 sedan/coupe.

The first (by M. Ouchi) cutaway is representative of the actual race car, but the second one is a mystery to me because the body is quite different from anything I've seen pictured- perhaps a concept image before the body was completed?

A correction for the index: the Allington cutaway on page 28 isn't the RA272, it is the RA271 from 1964.

RA302 cutaways, different artist from previous.

The chassis is by Ken, the motor is by Ouchi.

It would be interesting to discover Haymarket's view of cutaways which appeared in Autosport, Motoring News and Motor Sport being scanned and posted here. I suppose it depends on who owns the copyright.
Roger Lund

Edit; I was thinking along the lines of just how many good cutaways there were in those magazines, and how enjoyable it would be to see them here. I suggested some years ago to an appropriate party that a book of them would no doubt find a ready market.
