Obviously not a cutaway, but another pencil render, the original was a bit sharper than this soft scan! It is a satisfying way to colour a drawing, but probably not worth the effort now with the right software!

 Spectacular. How many 'pencil-render' variations of this car did you produce Tony? And apologies if it has already been asked, but what was the context for this type of work?

I only did two drawings in this style, wp, this was just a small rendering asked for by Lola for Press use - it appeared in Autosport, I'm not sure if it was used anywhere else. I also did a 'ghosted' version of another Lola Indycar, which I posted earlier. This one was done between A4 and A3, the 'ghosted' one nearer A2.

It would be good to try and track that down. To see the work 'at work' as it were. I will see if I can find it.

Thanks for pulling that Eiras Toyota illustration from Racecar Engineering. Interesting to see some of these things.
Just went through that Haynes book and realize that I liked the Terry Davey later work much better than the early. I think I am going to have to pull up the book with all those copied covers and see how they scan ... don't have high hopes.

Just checked him out and was led to JAAA, he is really very prolific. However I was particularly impressed with the work of Hideo Mizokawa. Very interesting, especially the near vertical cuts. The McLaren looks like a partially skinned Shark.

Mercedes-Benz 300SL (Any ideas as to who the artist may be?)

Marc or Ibsen will know - I can't quite make it out. I have never seen such barking-mad annotation. Pick out six totally uninteresting features and name them wrongly. Or seven and get one right by mistake. Where is the one that says 'Front of boat'?

:rotfl:

Somehow I don't think that the annotation is contemporaneous to the drawing and may have accidently 'fallen' or have been 'spilt' upon the drawing at a later date.

I am with you on this one, because I wouldn't for the love of whatever know why one would want to annotate a drawing this way.
First glance I thought Shin Yoshikawa, but it isn't his.
We'll have to zoom and analyse the signature.

Edit I think it is Stan Barrett

The name Stan Barrett sounded familiar, but it comes up for me as the driver of the Budweiser rocket Land Speed Record car which was built by Bill Fredericks in the last 70s. I doubt it would be the same guy ...
I have seen that signature somewhere previously, but am not sure I ever really made it out to my satisfaction then either. Don't have anything on this 300SL illustration, and don't show anything in my listing under the name Barrett. Will keep an eye out and see if I can spot the other stuff with that signature.

It looked a bit like an Inomoto to me, it is difficult to see from that small scan exactly whether it is his style or not, I couldn't be sure if it was his signature, it looked a bit 'short', but the first letter is an 'S'. Obviously the annotation was added later, by someone who knows nothing. On the other hand, it could be a rare, early Stan Barrett. Only time will tell...

Yeah thanks Stan. I thought for a moment rather than being an early Stan Barrett, perhaps a late Stan Barrett? Turns out not a Barrett at all. Unless it was annotated by Stan?

Well, Stan, I wish I had known that you were doing this kind of work when I dealt with Fredericks on the Rocket car. Of course, since the car looked like an aircraft that had been disassembled at the time, it would have been interesting to have to put it back together. Never knew any artists who actually did much super-high speed stuff, so it is great to have you here on the board ... even disguised as Tony Matthews.
I was skimming this stuff, and should have recognized that as Inomoto work, but never really looked that closely. Hate to have a discordant bell rung with a name, only to realize that you recognize the work, and the name ... not with any connection.
Think this could be considered a "Forest for the Trees" situation, as I should have recognized that 300SL from the Display of Inomoto's work that I saw and photographed. Interesting that I let this Barrett fellow slide one past so easily ...

It was pretty obvious that it was an Inomoto, but me being me I was more worried about saying "Yes, definitely an Inomoto!" only to find later that it wasn't, so I was hedging my bets by saying I wasn't sure! I am not the most knowledgeable contributor on this thread.

Stan Barrett was no use to me at all, don't know why I bothered to ask him...
