This thread is intended as a place – at best the place – for TNF’ers to inform fellow TNF’ers about current passings of motor racing people. Therefore it would be nice if it could be made a sticky one.

If someone can contribute to this thread I will try to insert the info into this posting. Full biographical dates and suggestions for „major achievement“ are welcome.

Let’s hope there’ll be only passings from natural causes.

Former Daytona 24 Hour competitor Josh Rehm was killed in a road accident yesterday. He was 28, I believe.

Let’s hope there’ll be only passings from natural causes.

I suggest simply saying 'ERA driver' for Martin Morris

I understand why you are suggesting this should be a sticky, but I feel it is unnecessary. With entries averaging two a week the thread will come back to the front page of its own accord.

Goodness me, that's a lot of deaths already in what I thought was a better year than most so far.

I don't know if you classify Lee Petty's widow (and matriach of the Petty family as a result), Elizabeth, as a motor racing person or not but she died, aged 88, on the 8th January 2006.

I put Elizabeth Petty on the list. But if we include her we cannot exclude Barbara Parks.
Where shall we draw the line? Let’s wait and see where it leads us to.

Hello Folks,

Rick Kelly, myself and a bunch of fellows working at Motorsport Memorial are finally putting together the "Lest We Forget" chapter of our project and we will soon be able to contribute with this thread as well. Bios will be included, incidentally.

Thanks a lot Reinhard for starting this. Yes, gone but not forgotten.

Best regards,

Muzza

Lee Drollinger, the ex-Indy 500 non-qualifier and American stock-car driver has died. I'll post any more details when I know them. (which may be a while - but I hope not). I believe he was 77 years of age.

Midget racer Dickie Deis passed away April 2 in his hometown of Fresno, California:

http://www.legacy.co...rsonId=17303647

Sadly, as is so often the case with American short track drivers, even those competing in what were regional feeder series, I don't have a lot on Deis' career other than he was the 1968 BCRA (Bay Cities Racing Association) indoor champion and that he did win some races with BCRA, where he did most of his racing. He also competed in the USAC National Midget series. Deis was a member of the BCRA Hall of Fame and the Kearney Bowl Speedway (Fresno, California) Hall of Fame.

Since Richie Jenkins told me that Jesse Rose had not died - it was the unusual case of two men by the same name born on the same day - I have deleted Rose's name from post #1.

Thanks  I knew his real name wasn't Lee, but wasn't sure whether it was Leo or Leon (or both).

It has been confirmed by the Indianapolis Motor Speedway that Bob Veith was indeed 81, not 79.

Sadly, there has also been another NASCAR death, that of Louise Smith, aged 89.

Don Nicholson,
1927-2006
Legendary drag racer "Dyno Don" Nicholson passed away Jan. 24 after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease. Originally a circle-track roadster campaigner in the late 1940s and then a participant in dry-lakes racing in El Mirage, Calif., and Bonneville, Utah, Nicholson went on to become a pioneer in Stock, Factory Experimental, Funny Car, and Pro Stock competition. He was voted No. 18 on the list of NHRA's Top 50 Drivers in 2001. He was 78.

Because his career spanned the 1960s and 1970s when there were relatively few NHRA national events on the calendar, the bulk of Nicholson’s wins came in match race competition, where he usually won more than 90 percent of his races. Nicholson holds the record for final-round appearances in the most NHRA eliminator categories, scoring either wins or runner-up efforts in Funny Car, Pro Stock, Super, Comp, Stock, and Street.

Nicholson was the first Ford campaigner to win a national event in Pro Stock, at the 1971 Summernationals, and he earned the NHRA Pro Stock championship title in 1977 at the age of 50.

Nicholson earned his "Dyno" nickname as one of the first to utilize the benefits of a chassis dyno, which he operated at a Chevrolet dealership in Pasadena, Calif., in the late 1950s. By the time that NHRA announced it would hold its first Winternationals at Pomona Raceway in 1961, he was ready to put his well-honed skills to use.

Nicholson not only won the Stock title at the '61 Winternationals, but he also defended his title in 1962 to become a household name in drag racing circles throughout the country.

When Chevrolet dropped its factory backing in 1963, Nicholson jumped to an A/Factory Experimental Mercury Comet in 1964 and enjoyed a match race winning percentage in excess of 90 percent that year. Nicholson was also among the first to use narrow rims to accentuate the wrinkled-sidewall effect on the tires in the mid-1960s. He recorded the first 10-second runs for a doorslammer with his '64 A/FX Comet and was also the first to begin lifting the front wheels off the ground on gear changes.

The cars were declared illegal for NHRA competition, but their nine-second performances easily outclassed the 10-second potential of the NHRA-legal Ford and Mercury entries. When Ford subsequently disallowed its cars from competing against the new Mopar "Funny Cars," Nicholson faced a serious loss in match race income.

"Dyno Don" Nicholson was regarded as one of the sport's best drivers and won the NHRA Pro Stock World Championship in 1977.

Nicholson converted his A/FX Comet into a Funny Car by altering the wheelbase and adding fuel injection and nitromethane fuel. Weeks later, he defeated the swiftest Mopar entry, the Ramchargers Dodge, in a pivotal match race with 9.30, 150-mph clockings. Mercury's racing manager, Al Turner, had the foresight to envision where the whole Funny Car phenomenon was headed, and he accordingly commissioned the Logghe Bros., of Detroit, to build tube-chassis Comets with one-piece flip-top bodies for the 1966 season.

This gave Nicholson such a performance advantage that the only driver who had the potential to defeat him was his protégé and Comet teammate, Eddie Schartman. Today's Funny Cars still use the same flip-top format that was established by Nicholson's Eliminator I Comet. Nicholson was virtually undefeated in 1966 and recorded the first Funny Car seven-second clocking at Martin, Mich., late that summer.

Nicholson enjoyed another banner season in 1967 with his Eliminator II, but when Funny Cars switched to supercharged engines late that year, Nicholson became concerned with the danger of blower explosions and engine fires. After completing the 1968 season with his 7.3-second Eliminator Cougar, Nicholson teamed with Sox & Martin, Bill Jenkins, and Dick Landy to form a match race circuit with carbureted, four-speed-equipped heads-up Super Stock cars, a throwback to the original A/FX vehicles of the mid-1960s.

Nicholson converted Jerry Harvey's 1966 A/FX Mustang into a heads-up Super Stocker and drove it to a victory in Street at the 1969 Springnationals while campaigning the car in A/MP. The popularity of the heads-up nine-second entries on the match race circuit prompted NHRA to create the Pro Stock category in 1970.

Competing with a hastily prepared Ford Maverick that was built in just seven days, Nicholson qualified for the Winternationals but fell to the overwhelming number of Dodge and Plymouth entries. He became dominant on the match race circuit, however, and during one August stretch ran up a streak of 45 consecutive round-wins. Working with assistants Earl Wade and Dave McGrane, he perfected the SOHC 427 Hemi combination and became Ford's first Pro Stock winner with his victory at the 1971 Summernationals.

Nicholson switched to a 351-Cleveland small-block-powered Ford Pinto in 1972, and the move eventually rewarded him with three consecutive wins at the AHRA Winternationals and NHRA Winternationals and Gatornationals to open up the 1973 season.

He was runner-up at the 1974 U.S. Nationals and 1976 Summernationals as a warm-up to his championship campaign of 1977. He won the Gatornationals, Springnationals, and U.S. Nationals in five final-round appearances in 1977 to claim the Winston title.

Nicholson continued to campaign with his Ford entries through the 1980 season. He made a comeback effort in 1984 with an Oldsmobile before retiring from Pro Stock at age 57. In 1988, however, he returned to drag racing with a nostalgia version of his 7.5-second, 152-mph Chevy Bel Air, and he made a brief attempt in Pro Stock Truck competition in 1998 and 1999.

Nicholson earned the Car Craft All-star Drag Racing Team Ollie Award in 1977 and was Funny Car Driver of the Year in 1967. He has been inducted into the International Drag Racing Hall of Fame in Ocala, Fla., and the Motorsports Hall of Fame in Novi, Mich. Nicholson was most recently honored as the grand marshal of the California Hot Rod Reunion in 1997.

Thank you, Bob, for your contribution.

While googling for info on "Dyno Don" Nicholson I stumbled across another NHRA passing: Gene Mooneyham.

Ray Pickrell 1938-2006

Among all the past and present prima donnas that success in racing can breed, there remains the few true characters. Genuine, down-to-earth men who, despite their fame and sometimes fortune, never suffer from the all too common narcissistic leanings toward their own greatness, nor do they profess to be anything other than one of the lads. None fit that description better than Ray Pickrell.

Ray was the archetypal ‘diamond geezer’, always sporting an infectious grin and always ready with a light-hearted quip, often while suffering considerable discomfort. He was the typical ‘Rocker’ who transferred his wild antics on a road going Gold Star to the relative safety of the race track – and with no little success. He also had his fair share of crashes. Indeed, his race debut in 1961, at Brands, on his Goldie, ended up in the banking of Paddock Bend!

His potential was spotted by none other than Geoff Monty who put him firmly on the right track with a variety of lightweight two-strokes. His break into the headlines came however when he went to ride for Paul Dunstall, aboard his swift Norton twins and which took him to his first Production TT win in 1968. It proved to be a good year, with Ray taking countless wins and lap records before a TT crash, at the top of Bray Hill in 1969, when an oil pipe came adrift on the works 500cc Triumph and sprayed the back wheel. He received a serious shoulder injury which, through a variety of rather negligent hospital decisions, almost cost him the use of an arm.

An invitation to ride for the BSA-Triumph factory saw Ray part of the team who transformed the new triples into record breaking race winners. One story typifies the man. While shaking down an early version of the racing triple, at Thruxton, in effect little more than a heavily modified roadster, he lifted off over a hump and landed heavily on the back wheel and silencers. The resultant crash wrecked the bike but Ray recalled, “I was lying with blood trickling from my mouth, thinking maybe I was dead, when I heard Arthur Jakeman say, ‘He’s bloody had it this time.’ So I opened both my eyes and told him to piss off!”

He went on to win many top level races with the triples and was often the hero of the Transatlantic Match Racer series, particularly when he beat American star Cal Rayborn.

Arguably his peak was 1972 when he won both the Production TT and the F750.

Another hefty crash in September that year, at Mallory, when the gearbox seized on the ageing triple, left him with a pelvis in six pieces. He never raced again, returning to driving lorries until forced into retirement courtesy of his old racing injuries. Amazingly Ray never raced professionally – “They paid me peanuts so I had a lot of holidays.”

He was never forgotten however, especially by those who feel his era epitomised what is now the classic scene, and his presence at the Beezumph Rally and as guest of honour at shows, dinners etc was always in demand. Sadly, even Ray could not defeat the dreaded cancer and while remaining as upbeat as possible considering his latter debilitation, he passed away on 20 February. He leaves a wife, Judy and two children Tim and Sue, from a previous marriage.

A celebration of his life was held at Bedford Crematorium, on Friday 3 March, which, as expected, was packed. If anyone wishes to make a donation to St John’s Hospice or Macmillan Cancer Relief, or both, then please send your cheque to Arnolds Funeral Service, Roff Avenue, Bedford MK41 7TE.

I had the pleasure of meeting him along with Toulo when the two were the only surviving drivers from the 1949 Silverstone GP. Unfortunately he died shortly after.

Nine times Isle of Man sidecar TT winner Dave Saville passed away on March 7th. He won his first TT in 1985 and then dominated up to 1990.

He had been quadraplegic since a crash at the 1993 Classic Manx Grand Prix.

Those with an interest in SA motor racing may have known (of) Eddie:

EDDIE PINTO

01/04/1937 – 04/05/2006

Eddie Pinto, the doyen of South African motor racing technicians, passed away in Cape Town on Thursday the 4th May after a short illness.

In a career in local and international motor sport spanning close to 50 years, Eddie Pinto earned himself a reputation as Mr. Fixit amongst local and international competitors. There was virtually nothing that this wizard of the machine shop could not repair or remake, very often without the assistance of even the most rudimentary drawing.

Ex Formula 1 World Champion and team owner Jack Brabham once asked of Pinto: “Is there anything that you can’t make?” Pinto’s answer was just a warm grin that was a trademark of his free giving personality.

Eddie first became involved in motor sport in the late 1950’s, just out of his teens, when his fabricating and machining expertise came to the attention of Doug Serrurier. “Doug was in the final phase of building an LDS Alfa for me,” says Sam Tingle. “We needed to test the engine on a dynamometer but we did not have the necessary adapters to do this. We found our way to Eddie and within hours he had made up everything in his own inimitable style.”

The friendship between Tingle and Pinto grew and in 1965 Eddie joined Sam as full time race technician, just ahead of the introduction of the 3-litre Formula 1 rules within which South African drivers fared so well during a golden era in South African motor sport. Most of the success of this team came with the ex Denny Hulme World Championship winning Brabham BT24. Tingles’ driving career ended in a horror smash in this car which was virtually destroyed in the accident and Pinto went on to run a F1 car for Peter de Klerk and then a series of Formula Atlantic cars in the S.A. Championship under the Team Gunston banner.

When most would be settling into retirement Eddie Pinto took on the challenge of joining Andre Verwey’s Gemini Transmissions organisation in the U.K. where he acted as a trouble-shooter, sorting out often difficult to assemble prototype transmissions. His precision workmanship was later put to good use in manufacturing replica F1 cars for use as show cars by various teams. It was from this position that he retired back in Cape Town after suffering a stroke in 2002.

A lasting tribute to the mechanical skill of Eddie Pinto is the painstakingly restored Tingle Brabham BT24 that now has a home in the Donington museum in England. Considered a total write-off after Sam’s accident, Eddie spent several years restoring this car to its pristine World Championship winning state in the hands of Denny Hulme.

(Felix's note: this is the Brabham featured in the latest MotorSport)

You would have to search far and wide to find anyone with a better knowledge and understanding of things mechanical than Eddie Pinto.

Eddie is survived by his long time partner Pat Ashley.

Scott Geoffrion, a two-time NHRA Pro Stock world championship runner-up and nine-time national event winner, died May 8 of an apparent heart attack in Southern California. He was 40. Geoffrion was hospitalized Sunday night for observation with breathing problems and a fever stemming from ulcers in his esophagus and was stricken the following day.

Geoffrion, who drove for Warren Johnson from 1987 through 1991 before joining David Hutchens' Wayne County Speed Shop/Dodge Boys team with Darrell Alderman, reached the final round 28 times in a career that spanned more than 200 races from 1987 through 2004. He didn't score his first victory until his 10th final round, in Memphis in 1993, where he defeated Pro Stock legend Bob Glidden. His most recent win was in 1997 in Topeka. Geoffrion logged six top 10 points finishes, including world championship runner-up finishes in 1992 and 1994. He scored a career-high six victories in 1994, yet finished second to Alderman. He finished third in 1993 and fourth in 1991.

Geoffrion sat out the 2001 season after being released from the Dodge camp following three lackluster seasons, but resurfaced in a Ford with new team owner Hurley Blakeney and scored his final top 10 finish in 2003, a season in which he was runner-up twice. "Scott will be remembered not only as a fierce competitor in the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, but as a friend to so many in the Pro Stock community," said Tom Compton, president, NHRA. "Everyone at NHRA is shocked by the news of his unexpected passing and our thoughts and prayers go out to Scott's entire family."

According to his family, wakes will be held Thursday in California and Monday, May 15, at the Vander Plaat Funeral Home, 257 Godwin Ave., Wyckoff, N.J.

His funeral will be Tuesday, May 16, at Immaculate Conception Church, 900 Darlington Ave., Mahwah, N.J., at 10 a.m. The services are open to the public. Geoffrion is survived by his children, Kyle and Alexa; brother, Rick; sister, Michele; and parents, Richard and Jeanne. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to the Drag Racing Association of Women, www.drawfasthelp.org. -NHRA-

The Social Security Death Index confirms that Paul Dana was indeed born in 1973 (instead of 1975).
Oddly enough SSDI gives the date of his death as 25 March. ):

From this week’s AUTOSPORT magazine – so often criticized on this forum – I learn of Don Cressy’s death „earlier this month“.

Does anyone know the exact date?

I can't help with his birthdate, but I'm very sorry to hear that he's died. I was a great fan of the Rainey family when he and daughter Joy were hillclimbing in the UK. Sincere condolences to Joy and to all his family and friends.

But obviously he died recently in a car crash in Turkey.

Azdrubal Fontes Bayardo died on the 9th July 2006, in Montevideo, according to both StatsF1 & Wikipedia and from this site in Uruguay:-
