Thats the car Autosport described as a Red Cosworth powered Ferrari that Fabi flew in pre season testing with - unfortunately that pace had dissapeared come Brazil...

Terry Sayles races this car in the HFO Championship now. It is in the sky blue colour and runs with the Kelemata stickers (and the Pink Snail!!) and is marked up as the Ghinzani car. I remember it being described as a blue Ferrari at the time and IIRC it was the year when the big `tea-tray` rear wings appeared on some cars and Tyrrell tried a di-hedral rear wing in Austria. Still, the Osella does it for me with the plain looks and no nonsense approach - Terry just arrives and drives at each race and the car rarely lets him down - sure to be one credit to it that it is still as reliable!!!Thats the car Autosport described as a Red Cosworth powered Ferrari that Fabi flew in pre season testing with - unfortunately that pace had dissapeared come Brazil...

I believe this photo would have been taken at the final turn of the Adelaide circuit. It's Grouillard in the FA1ME in 1990. I'm curious about the rearwing endplate on the Osella. If anyone knows the history of this endplate I'd appreciate it. I'm not sure if it was part of the race livery or a qualifying livery. I'm also wondering what the writing says on the endplate. They look like they're signatures. The reason is I'm 3d modelling this FA1ME and am researching the track liveries for the Osella but this is the only photo of the endplate I've come across. Haven't seen any video footage of it either. Thanks.
The last race for Osella (before it became Fondmetal) was Australia 1990, So I'd guess it was a farewell/celebration from the team. Also judging by the fairly full grandstands in the background I'd say it was the race livery too.

I'd appreciate if anyone could point me to a more detailed photo of the signatures though. I'd like to recreate the endplate livery.
Thanks again vekspeed. Your likely bang on.

Frank Lyons' Osella FA1 at this year's Silverstone Classic. I don't know the history of this car but it was dated as 1981 in the programme.

No solutions but if you check out Murray Walker's Grand Prix Year (p137) you will see the 'other' endplate, possibly in practice with just marks on it.

Jarier also had some races at the tail end of 1981, immediately taking a DNQer into a regular midfield runner.
Indeed when Jumper took over the #32 from Angel Guerra, Piercarlo Ghinzani and Giorgio Francia at the British GP he qualified 20th and finished 8th and qualified for each of his remaining races in 1981 while poor Beppe Gabianni scored consecutive DNQ's for the remainder of his season.

Hello Mauro! You can't leave us with just that, though...we need all the tales of Osella/Fondmetal. We never hear enough about the teams that worked so hard just to be there...were you there when Piercarlo got his points?
Hi...nop... i started to work there just on the 1989 till 1992 when the team become Fondmetal
unfortunately we never got points in this time, but on my first Gp ,in Canada '89 Larini was in 3rd position(front on Senna)
before some water going in ecu box...
anyway it was 4 fantastic years .

Here is a google earth picture. The factory on the top right corresponds to an address I have for Osella. There is no sign of the test track but imagine there has been a lot of building in the last 20 years.

Quick question Mauro were Osella still using the volpiano test track when you were there in 1989? and when did they leave Volpiano was it at the end of 1990?
Here is a google earth picture. The factory on the top right corresponds to an address I have for Osella. There is no sign of the test track but imagine there has been a lot of building in the last 20 years.
I was in Osella till December 90...and till this time sometime we test the f1 car on this track, just to check all was fine...than someone of as,mouve to Bergamo in Fondmetal on the beginning of 91...so the track was using for sure till 90 and probably on the 91-92-93 years for testing prototype Osella's...i don't know when Osella moving in south Italy ..probably on the 92-93.
About the image ..is just little wrong the adresse ....try to look on this coordinates :
45° 11' 27 84 N
7° 48' 38 20 E
You will find the old factory,on the right of the factory there is a new bulding,in place where once were the track...but if you check near at the footbal field and back to the factory, you can see a little part of track.

Hopefully this is the right place Mauro.
Thanks for your help
P.S. Was it used a lot, including with the f1 cars?
No..it was used maybe 6-10 time per years...track was very little and short....something like 900 mts
anyway if i can upload your image, you can see inside blue area was Osella ..
on the red circle factory and workshop....the track maybe was as i yellow drawing

Ghinzani at Imola in the FA1F
Danner at Imola in the FA1G.
The team had intended to introduce a motori moderni powered FA1H chassis but due to a lack of money stuck to the old alfa v8s but still built the new chassis. It was late but i have vague memories of autosport having a picture of it in a garage in the pits. Anyway the team appeared not to bring a spare car to the first few races, certainly Danner ended up using Ghinzani's car to qualify at Imola.
So when the new chassis finally arrived at Spa the team had three chassis.
Danner above is in the older FA1G.
Below is the 'new' FA1H. Visually very similair to the FA1G but crucially with black air out lets on the sidepods.
But shock horror is the below car a second FA1H? Why the different coloured mirrors?
I am pretty sure for some reason the mirrors were changed.
Questions
Why was the more senoir Ghinzani not driving the new car when Danner was around but was when Berg appeared?
One final point on Spa. I have read that Spa was nothing more than a shakedown for the FA1H in practice and the FA1G was racd but looking at tv footage Danner retired into the pits in a car with the black ir outlets ie an FA1H.
The other big mystery for me in 86 was Montreal and Detroit. No sign of the new car at Montreal which I put down to not wanting to take it across the atlantic and save money with two chassis and then i turned up the pictures below at Detrot of Ghinzani apparently in an FA1H which totally blew my theory.
After that things were fairly simple.
Ghinzani had the FA1H at Paul Ricard and Brand Hatch, (Lots of books say Berg had it at Brands Hatch but there is no pictorial evidence of this).
It got destroyed at Brands. Then Ghinzani had an FA1G with salvaged 'bits' from the FA1H for the balance of the season with Berg (and once Caffi) always in the ancient FA1F.
I think the crucial question in all of this Mauro is do the black air outlets confirm it is the newer chassis or could the team just move body work from the two chassis without too much hassle?

HiYep it was a rebadging exercise. I always had a soft spot for Osella when they were racing. Shame that they have gone the way of most Italian f1 entries.
The first Osella was a stunner in my opinion.
Come on peaps, Alex Caffi is the Osella boy for me, Osella primo!!!!! Forsa
