Yes I had a quick google on the new address, found the old one in an old reference book from the early 8o's and did a google earth on the old address. No sign of a track now although there was a go kart track and certainly enough space behind the unit that was at the address. There has been new looking development behind what looks like the original unit.

I should have some Osellla pics from Long Beach that I will eventually scan and add to my flickr stuff.

In the meantime, here's one of Jacques, the brother, Villeneuve in an Osella 2-lliter CanAm car at Laguna Seca in '81....

It looks like they ran out of paint and simply glued the race number stencil onto the car instead.

So here is Montreal

Now all change for Silverstone. Two new cars pukka FA1E's for Fabi and Ghinzani, both Alfa Romeo V12.

Slight change now with both chassis sprouting air outlets behind the drivers 'ears'. No change now till 84!

Thats the car Autosport described as a Red Cosworth powered Ferrari that Fabi flew in pre season testing with - unfortunately that pace had dissapeared come Brazil...

I believe this photo would have been taken at the final turn of the Adelaide circuit. It's Grouillard in the FA1ME in 1990. I'm curious about the rearwing endplate on the Osella. If anyone knows the history of this endplate I'd appreciate it. I'm not sure if it was part of the race livery or a qualifying livery. I'm also wondering what the writing says on the endplate. They look like they're signatures. The reason is I'm 3d modelling this FA1ME and am researching the track liveries for the Osella but this is the only photo of the endplate I've come across. Haven't seen any video footage of it either. Thanks.

Terry Sayles races this car in the HFO Championship now. It is in the sky blue colour and runs with the Kelemata stickers (and the Pink Snail!!) and is marked up as the Ghinzani car. I remember it being described as a blue Ferrari at the time and IIRC it was the year when the big `tea-tray` rear wings appeared on some cars and Tyrrell tried a di-hedral rear wing in Austria. Still, the Osella does it for me with the plain looks and no nonsense approach - Terry just arrives and drives at each race and the car rarely lets him down - sure to be one credit to it that it is still as reliable!!!

The last race for Osella (before it became Fondmetal) was Australia 1990, So I'd guess it was a farewell/celebration from the team. Also judging by the fairly full grandstands in the background I'd say it was the race livery too.

Frank Lyons' Osella FA1 at this year's Silverstone Classic. I don't know the history of this car but it was dated as 1981 in the programme.

Thanks vekspeed, good catch. Gees I'm being brain lazy... Osella F1 + 1990 season + Adelaide circuit + Full Crowd = Farewell race livery endplate :well:
I'd appreciate if anyone could point me to a more detailed photo of the signatures though. I'd like to recreate the endplate livery.

Thanks again vekspeed. Your likely bang on.

Thanks for that picture of Franks car at Silverstone Giraffe. IIRC it`s the ex `Jumper Jarier` car. Jean-Pierre went on to drive for Enzo Osella in 82 alongside the late Ricardo Palletti. There is footage in the 1982 highlights of J-P-J losing a wheel at top notch just after the pits at Monza before all the first chicane appeared....J-P-J becomes a passenger at 180mph and must have just held the steering wheel straight. After the car breaks up like an eggshell he just steps out the front and throws the wheel on the seat!!! Phew!! Back on the thread, I do know that Frank has been very busy getting the car race ready and was heavy in talks with Terry Sayles over the Brands weekend discussing chassis details and suchlike. Must say that both the Osellas look fandabadozee on the track. Hope all is well for you Tony G best wishes from us all ....KM & tribe!!

Jarier also had some races at the tail end of 1981, immediately taking a DNQer into a regular midfield runner.

It does make you wonder sometimes that if history was to repeat itself and the likes of Villeneuve, De la Rosa, Coulthard and recently active drivers were given a wild card entry to a GP at the end of a season in a lowly car what could happen. J-PJ certainly had the experience and commitment to do it with Osella whilst keeping his career on the track.

No solutions but if you check out Murray Walker's Grand Prix Year (p137) you will see the 'other' endplate, possibly in practice with just marks on it.

I have memories of Mansell gesticulating at him and James Hunt commentating on it as Groulliard was guilty of blocking down the back straight. One interesting point, where have all Osella's secondary sponsors gone at Adelaide? Is it because the race is outside Europe? Seems odd. The rear wing was well sponsored at Phoenix and Interlagos and was still well sponsored at Jerez. I have no picture for Suzuka.

Indeed when Jumper took over the #32 from Angel Guerra, Piercarlo Ghinzani and Giorgio Francia at the British GP he qualified 20th and finished 8th and qualified for each of his remaining races in 1981 while poor Beppe Gabianni scored consecutive DNQ's for the remainder of his season.

Quick question Mauro were Osella still using the volpiano test track when you were there in 1989? and when did they leave Volpiano was it at the end of 1990?

Here is a google earth picture. The factory on the top right corresponds to an address I have for Osella. There is no sign of the test track but imagine there has been a lot of building in the last 20 years.

I was in Osella till December 90...and till this time sometime we test the f1 car on this track, just to check all was fine...than someone of as,mouve to Bergamo in Fondmetal on the beginning of 91...so the track was using for sure till 90 and probably on the 91-92-93 years for testing prototype Osella's...i don't know when Osella moving in south Italy ..probably on the 92-93.
About the image ..is just little wrong the adresse ....try to look on this coordinates :
45° 11' 27 84 N
7° 48' 38 20 E
You will find the old factory,on the right of the factory there is a new bulding,in place where once were the track...but if you check near at the footbal field and back to the factory, you can see a little part of track. ;)

I don't know if Mauro or anyone can help. As you have probably spotted I was mad on Osella in the mid 1980's but I am very confused by their use of chassis in 1986. The team started 86 with Piercarlo Ghinzani in the old 84 chassis, the FA1F, with Danner in essentially the 85 car , the FA1g. Visually very easy to tell the difference side on.
Posted Image
Ghinzani at Imola in the FA1F
Posted Image
Danner at Imola in the FA1G.
The team had intended to introduce a motori moderni powered FA1H chassis but due to a lack of money stuck to the old alfa v8s but still built the new chassis. It was late but i have vague memories of autosport having a picture of it in a garage in the pits. Anyway the team appeared not to bring a spare car to the first few races, certainly Danner ended up using Ghinzani's car to qualify at Imola.
Posted Image

So when the new chassis finally arrived at Spa the team had three chassis.
Posted Image
Posted Image
Danner above is in the older FA1G.
Below is the 'new' FA1H. Visually very similair to the FA1G but crucially with black air out lets on the sidepods.
Posted Image
But shock horror is the below car a second FA1H? Why the different coloured mirrors?
Posted Image
I am pretty sure for some reason the mirrors were changed.
Questions
Why was the more senoir Ghinzani not driving the new car when Danner was around but was when Berg appeared?
One final point on Spa. I have read that Spa was nothing more than a shakedown for the FA1H in practice and the FA1G was racd but looking at tv footage Danner retired into the pits in a car with the black ir outlets ie an FA1H.

The other big mystery for me in 86 was Montreal and Detroit. No sign of the new car at Montreal which I put down to not wanting to take it across the atlantic and save money with two chassis and then i turned up the pictures below at Detrot of Ghinzani apparently in an FA1H which totally blew my theory.
Posted Image
Posted Image

After that things were fairly simple.
Ghinzani had the FA1H at Paul Ricard and Brand Hatch, (Lots of books say Berg had it at Brands Hatch but there is no pictorial evidence of this).
It got destroyed at Brands. Then Ghinzani had an FA1G with salvaged 'bits' from the FA1H for the balance of the season with Berg (and once Caffi) always in the ancient FA1F.

I think the crucial question in all of this Mauro is do the black air outlets confirm it is the newer chassis or could the team just move body work from the two chassis without too much hassle?

Yep it was a rebadging exercise. I always had a soft spot for Osella when they were racing. Shame that they have gone the way of most Italian f1 entries.

The first Osella was a stunner in my opinion.

I do know that on occasion, Terry Sayles has used two different engine covers on his Osella in the HFO. One is just a straight forward cover and the one he uses on the odd race weekend is the twin air intake version. The car is marked up as a P Ghinzani car and run by JRT from Belgium. Pictures can be seen on the HFO website....
