Hello all. I've always been intrigued by Bob Anderson but have managed to find very little info on him. Do any of you have any recollections/memories of him. I've always thought he was one of F1's forgotten men. The little info I have managed to find has mainly related to his accident at Silverstone. I seem to remember Louis Stanley claiming that the ambulance driver at Silverstone was also expected to drive the fire engine! I also read somewhere that Anderson started his career racing bikes. Anyway, I think it's important to remember drivers such as Bob who helped contribute to our sport's rich history.

Copuldn't agree more, Kev. Do a search on here and you'll find a fair bit of stuff about Bob, so I won't bother repeating the gist of it here. There are quite a few of us around here who have a lot of time for him (me especially).

I only know of what I have read of him in the past few years. Driving to race meetings with the BT11 on the back of a Volkswagen Pickup under a tarpaulin.

And I recall he made a blinding start at Monaco in '66, up to 4th by St. Devote, but he didn't make an oversubscribed grid the next year.

Cheers Ian. I'm enjoying myself having a browse through other comments about him on the forum. Of course, performing a search would have been the logical thing to do in the first place, but it's still early!

One of the things that struck me about Bob Anderson was that despite running elderly machinery he was clearly a fine and competitive driver. Why did no F1 team pick him up? Perhaps he was not quite WC material, but he would have at the very least been a very good No 2.

There is a great pic of a shirtless Bob loading his car on the "redoubtable VW transporter", it's what racing should really be about !!

Just had a look at the Sutton images. Considering buying one of them but I can't make my mind up. I don't know how to find old threads either. No doubt there's an explanation on here somewhere.

Hellol, Bob drove with an FPF Climax 2,7 ltr. engine in the season 66, was this the old 2,5 ltr. 4 cylindre and 240 HP F1 engine from 1960? In which way could he developed the engine. I´m very astonish if this was really the 4 cyl. engine!

Yes, this was definitely the 4 cylinder Climax FPF. An FPF was also used in the original F1 Eagle (TG101) in 1966 prior to the V12 Weslake being ready.

wow unbelievable!! A engine six or seven years old! How many HP had this engine? What is the history after the f1 since 1960? The climax engines were really benefits for the Motorsport. How much cost this engine back in the siexties? OH man really good story..

I believe that TG101 last F1 race was in the Canadian GP in 1969 driven by Al Pease, still with the FPF Climax, which was by then 10 years old. :)

Apparently Repco in Australia got hold of the patterns after Coventry-Climax had finished producing them, as the FPF was the mainstay engine of Australia's Gold Star Series until the Repco V8 was introduced in into the Gold Star in 1967. The V8 was found to be not as reliable in 2.5 litre form as it was in F1, and subsequently an FPF powered car won the Gold Star in 1967.

Re. 2.5l engines in 3l formula, even Ferrari (one loaned to Parnelli, and driven by Baghetti in '66 Italian GP) resorted to it with Dino 246 engine, IIRC.

To kevthedrummer and thomaskomm : I was advised to search the TNF BB ! Do that! Its good.
Go for Coventry Climax FPF and/or Bob Anderson and you get something on both! Or use your imagination and you will keep on finding. Its fun and very learning. Regards Bjørn.
PS :Nothing wrong in opening new threads, after a couple of years ,more info , new people , but I believe we should try to keep these threads on track, that is this one is for Bob Anderson.
Regards and good luck hunting, regards Bjørn.
PS2 Just printed another 12 pages on Bob, gotta read them now!

In "Brabham the Grand Prix cars" by Alan Henry (Hazleton Publishing 1985) the photo is published underneath a photo of the Brabham transporter. I have a copy of the book

It's a photo you won't forget once you have seen it. It's the complete opposite to todays F1 paddocks.

There's an article in the September 1966 'Motor Sport' about GP privateers, with a picture of the VW.

There was also a '20 questions to Bob Anderson' in the June 1967 'Motor Racing'.

Pete Lovely was another who used a pick-up truck, for his Lotus 49 in 1969 - there are pictures in Michael Oliver's book.

:cat: I think its a bear!(Bjørn in Danish is transl.:Bear)

Thanks to Tomas for the tip.

Thanks to Paul : I wonder if "your" article from MS1966 is the same as October 2002 (MS) ?
I believe in an older Bob Anderson thread(2002) Doug Nye posted the 20 qs from Motor Racing
Have seen Lovely Vws he had of late more than one, but started out with the old version with 2 part front window.

Thanks to all .

Bjørn

PS. Kev , are you still here?

I think the Pathe date is wrong. It should be 19th May according to "Long forgotten races" by Chris Ellard.

Imagine, a F1 race with a podium of Anderson, de Beaufort and Ian Raby. Great.
