A comment here about Louis Stanley's opinion made me reach for his book: "Strictly Off The Record." But in it Stanley is generally positive about JPB. He concludes the summary of the great win at Monaco by writing: "Such was the Frenchman's determination that Ronnie Peterson told me afterwards how Beltoise, exasperated at being balked, stuck the BRM nose under Peterson's car and for several yards the Swede was driving with only the front wheels on the track. The ploy worked. Beltoise went past leaving a wall of spray, carving his way through the traffic with zero visibility."

On another day while being interviewed standing next to the Matra 670, either he or Cevert remarked: "We race for the glory of France."  And it was glorious indeed.

RIP.

Very comprehensive obituary in the Times this morning, shame that the likes of Autosport and Motor sport will not do as well.

RIP JPB

Likewise, Henri Pescarolo paid a fitting tribute to the man the other day, and rightly so.

I've posted it elsewhere here, but his drive at Monaco 1972 is one of the all-time great drives.  Complete domination on the most treacherous surface of the most treacherous track.

That would explain the scuff marks on the nose of the BRM that I'd seen in photographs.

RIP Belter. One of my favourites of the early 1970s.

My abiding memories of him:

- putting a BRM on pole at the 1973 Race of Champions at Brands Hatch (BRMs were 1-2-3 on the starting grid!)

- listening to the 1974 South African GP on the BBC on a clapped out tranny on Gravesend High Street and wishing that Carlos would break down

- seeing him win the 1974 British Airways 1000 km at Brands (why the white helmet?) in the wonderful sounding MS670C. One of my fondest motor racing memories

Members of this forum may not know that he did a lot of good work in France to promote road safety after his retirement. Maybe because his first wife died in a road accident. And I have never understood why so many think that he sustained his injuries on a motorbike. It was in fact in his very first race in a car.

In response to an earlier post, Pesca's health problems are obviously unpleasant, but they are not life-threatening. I think that he is suffering from a facial muscle disorder.

I think he's suffered from this for a few years now and wonder if it's a long term consequence of his 1969 Le Mans testing shunt when he suffered facial injuries.

That aside, RIP Jean-Pierre Beltoise.

My belated condolences to the family.

Best regards to a life well lived.

Ditto what Barry said.

Although I don't have my old Road and Track magazines handy, I remember that Rob Walker always rated Jean-Pierre Beltoise quite highly in his year-end assesments of the drivers and teams.

I can't remember if we've seen this. 1966, the Beltoise family having fun.  (No sound unfortunately. The Pathé notes identify various family members)

And here's a clip of JPB's, and BRM's, final Formula 1 win: the Victory race at Brands Hatch, October 1972.

The clip only works for me if I press the 'watch on YouTube' button, rather than the central play arrow. May be different for others.

Is JPB's car a Djet? If so, possibly part of his 1966 Matra F2 deal.
