I would like to ask what kind of magazines were available between 1965 - 1980 in Europe, with car tests/reviews or race reports.

Germany...the excellent Sportfahrer.If you put the names of magazines you wish to buy onto ebay,you will find many for sale.I kave bought a lot of my favourite race reports for as little as 1 euro each. Ian.

"Powerslide" was from Switzerland, not Germany.

Germany also had "Automobil Illustrierte", but I'm not sure if that was still around by 1965. Also, I'm not sure if the ONS Mitteilungen qualify as a proper magazine.

For race reports,results & photos best british mag was Speedworld International-sadly lasted only one season-1968-was run by Gregor Grant after he left Autosport.
There was also a rival to Motoring News called Auto News that only lasted for the 1966 season-can still be seen advertised in the movie 'Grand Prix' !!

Regarding Germany:

Powerslide was Swiss, Hobby was a general technical magazine (comparable with Popular Mechanics in the USA) with car tests but no race reports, Mot also without race reports, but you can add Auto Zeitung to your list (founded in 1969).

Auto Hebdo (F), n°1 = January 1976 (also a Belgian Version in 78-80, then some extra pages monthly)
L'automobile (F), Very good in the 60's, still exists now but...
L'auto journal (F)=> L'Auto-Journal (also a Belgian version in the 60's),
Scratch (F). I only have one n°, September 1975
Ecchapment (F) => Echappement (About the National French events, especially rallyes and hillclimb)
Sport auto (F), N°1 in 1962, peak end of the 60's, beginning of the 70's.
Virage (B)=> Virage Auto, start in 1964, More Belgian than French. Stop around 1974/75...
Champion (F)
Sportmoteur (B)=> Start as Les Sport Moteurs, a 6-page (or 8) included in the Belgian newspaper Les Sports, then as Sport Moteur, very interesting from 68 to 73, ...

+ Moteurs (F), I have some issues (Jan 69, Nov 73, ...)

From Belgium:
Retro, 73 - 77, about the Belgian local races, changed the name into Turbo (78 -> now)
Le Nouveau Sport Moteur (around 1979/1980), not really interesting (for me).

I think that Virage Auto in fact ended up by being "taken over" by Sport-Auto , I remember a few issues of Sport-Auto with "Virage Auto" written below, in a font size which went decreasing on each issue over a few months until the name Virage Auto disappeared altogether....

The same thing happened to Champion a few years later, Champion was a very good magazine, with the specificity that it dealt half with car races, half with motorbikes races. I think it was published by a "sister" team of Sport-Auto in fact . The bike part slowly diminished when a proper bike-only weekly, Moto-Journal, came in competition....and eventually, same story as Virage, a few months with "Champion" written besides Sport-Auto on the cover, and then the title disappeared.

VIRAGE AUTO began in 1964 and ended in December 1973 and in January 74 issue of Sport Auto the name Virage auto appeared for a few months only behind Sport Auto Name
Virage auto was nice for its special , creative and artistic motor racing BW pics during the sixties and the way their correspondent reported races .There are quite rares and difficult to find now,even on E BAY .The sixties issues had mainly BW pics .I have the 67 collection with only BW but very collectable pics, with a BW centerfold.Monthly

CHAMPION monthly mag began in 1966 and disappeared in the mid seventies (74 ??)and belonged to Homme N ° 7 publishing , the same group than Sport auto.not enough specialized (Motor racing, motorcycle racing, boat racing ect...)


ECHAPPEMENT began in 1968 and is still alive today.the bible of the national French races drivers,
the best french mag for the national Hill climbs and Rallye events .Monthly

AUTO POCHE : has not been listed on the posts above.A monthly French mag that can be mismatched with a book cause of its format, that began too at the end of 1967 I think .Contained infos, pics and report on majors races , but was general automotive news oriented.Sometimes, there was a color race poster in some editions .don t know when it vanished ..??was there in the seventies

MOTEURS began in 1957 as a bimestrial mag than became a monthly mag in the seventies , I think.It was printed in a big format and with luxury paper printing .Alas, the mag disappeared in 1973 .During the sixties , quite alls the pics where in BW .a very sought after mag for the sixties period . modified is name in MOTEURS COURSE in the seventies


L ACTION AUTOMOBILE was a monthly mag too. first issue in 1960 and still alive today in a very different format .Only a few pages dedicated tomotor racing .Luc Augier was chief Motor racing pages journalist.disposable for the motor racing fan

L AUTO JOURNAL was , like MOTORING NEWS for UK or AUTOWEEK for USA , a newspapers format and paper printed TWICE MONTHLY .general automotive oriented, he contained, though, some interesting reports on Motor Racing , with color pics , in the sixties .JP Beltoise was reporting racing cars test during the sixties inside .Very intersting stuff to read .Very informative .he left in newspaper format in the seventies I think.still alive today

SPORT AUTO : The Jabby Crombac monthly mag,since 1962 .Contained centerfolds in color .Published GP laps by laps chart, that was a rare thing .Considered the bible for the french motor racing enthusiast, it is not always as detailed than L AUTOMOBILE though on covering Motor Racing events .depends on what event ...

SPORT AUTO Germany was from the same group Homme N ° 7 than french Sport Auto, and began
in 1968 with some differents report than the french one, I think .the late Jabby Crombac took this initiative.Monthly

L AUTOMOBILE began in 1946 .Monthly mag .contained a "Sport Mecaniques " part, that was very detailed and interesting , with both some color pics, but mainly plenty of BW pics .Paper sheet was of medium quality .But was as informative as SPORT AUTO on Motor Racing .David Phipps sended sometimes interviews translated in french .Still alive today

SCRATCH began in 1973 and lasted for a few years only .the mag consisted in fact of posters to cut and beautiful big color pics with a report on the back related to the race the color poster was linked too.Monthly.I remember issues dates was erratic, sometimes...

F1 MAGAZINE : as you asked from 1965 to 1980 : began in 1979 .Focused on Formula one news, but contained many colors pics .Later FORMULE 1 MAG , i think .

AUTO HEBDO : since 1976, this weekly mag is undoubtly the best french Motor Racing coverage mag .Full of info and many , many pics .Never cover history though .But from 1976 to 1980 (years Feri asked for) , the mag to get ! At the beginning, they presented the mag as the continuation of SCRATCH mag, though both format and content was different

MOTOR RUNDSCHAU : a twice monthly mag ,with Motor Racing dedicated pages , and BW pics only during the sixties.Intersting for motor racing technical analysis

AUTOMOBILSPORT : a monthly mag, dedicated to motor racing only .Alas, was very disappointing both regarding the paper sheets quality, and the fews BW pics inside .


For Italy :

QUATTRORUOTE : A lot to read, but a few Motor Racing pages, with both Color and BW pics .Sometimes a very big color Poster .Monthly mag

AUTO ITALIANA :Belonged to the same edting group than Quattroruote.Weekly mag. was in the sixties , with AUTOSPORT , one of the best mags imo for the Motor racing coverage .Very analytic and seriously written reports and opinions . Only BW but numerous BW pics during the sixties .ended alas in 1969.Completely the opposite approach than AUTOSPRINT , a more Paparazzi

The best Danish magazines of the early 1970s however were:

Bil-Nyt (I don't know when it appeared, but I the oldest I have is from June 1970). It continued to the end of 1972, when it merged with "Skandinavisk Motor-Journal to form:

MOTOR-Journalen, which merged with Bilen og BÃ¥den in the autumn of 1974 to form "Bilen og BÃ¥den/MOTOR-Journalen", which was re-baptised "BILEN Motor og Sport" in very late 1974 or very early 1975 (I think from the March 1975 issue).

Bil-Nyt covered every F1 GP and the Sportscar WC extensively, and from 1972 it also included starting grids and qualifying times.

From 1976 this was completed with lap charts, but the coverage soon lessened, when Carl Chr. Hansen left (the merged magazine was published by Fogtdal, who never really considered F1 and racing of prime importance, unlike Bil-Nyt and MOTOR-Journalen, which were published by Scandinavian Motor Press).

He then founded the quarterly "Auto & Sport" which first appeared in the spring of 1978, but folded after the 1980 season. Later Hansen, who'd also written for Bil-Nyt and MOTOR-Journalen, became the chairman of the Danish Automobile Sports Union - I think he's holding the position even today.

In former Yugoslavia there was only one permanent motor magazine in that timeframe, Slovenian (but with a Serbian edition too) Avto Magazin, starting around 1967. and I think still going in Slovenia. A few short-lived Croatian attempts fit into your timeframe: Moto revija (late 60s), Vozaci i saobracaj (early 70s) and AMO (late 70s).

I still have three copies of Auto News (in rather tatty crumbling condition) from 1966 and it was very much in the mould of Motoring News - race reports (international and club), rallying, car tests, news and features.

Does anyone else remember, and know anything about, this paper? For instance, who was the editor? Such information is not provided in the paper, only a couple of addresses - one in London (Editorial and Advertising) and one in Kettering, Northants (Editorial H/O). Interestingly, it was published by Motor Cycle News. John Sprinzell and Eoin Young appear to have been regular contributors, and Mike Garton's name is attached to a number of race reports. And, did it indeed, only last for one year?

I remember it (but know nothing useful about it). I bought a couple of copies, but didn't persist as it cost a whopping 50% more than Motoring News (9d compared to 6d). At least I think that's what it cost - does this tally with the price on your copies, Pete?

Well remembered Tim. Yes 9d, and MN, as you say, was only 6d. Being 12 years old at the time, and surviving on pocket money, I am sure that I would have plumped for MN on most occasions and spent the other 3d on a Milky Way or some other tempting confection.

Motor World (Weekly) In 1965 it was the second oldest motoring magazine in the world that was still being published. (1895).
Top Gear (Monthly) Though basically the magazine of the Scottish Sporting Car Club it was privately owned and published and was of good quality.
