This is a true shame. How can Ford let this happen. The same sad state of affairs can be seen on their Lotus 38 Indy winner too. Shame on them.

Also there was former Shelby crew Bill Eaton. Apparently, others were asked to contribute their belts to the fixing of the bonnet on J6. When Shelby was asked he said, "No, it's my alligator belt!" But Bill said "Yes you will"...and he did. Apparently Bill has a photo of it. Bill is a very quite and gentle person, who apologizes for his lack of memory. Apparently he had a stroke in recent years. Here is a photo of him holding my diecast of J5:

Here is Tom Malloy's GT 40 seen in the background of this picture at The William K. Vanderbilt jr Concour d'Elegance at Newport, RI this year.

As you'll see in the pictures Tom Malloy's J-11 was really nicely prepared. And it was running a tunnel port 427.
Enjoy,

Red with white stripe.
Was that J11 or J6 before it got repainted yellow?
It swapped ends, if I remember correctly, and lost some bodywork.
I wanted to spend some more time looking at the car, but I was busy wrenching on another racer....

Hi
That was J 11. J6 has a Shelby nose. (No visable front brake inlets they're behind radiator) J11 has H&M nose.
J6 and 0846 will be at Quail and if you're there please say hello.
Best

My father Jim Mason who build the frame for all MK4 at Brunswick Aircraft Corp., repaired J2 with two of his colleagues and I still have the title for it, later the car was sold unfinished.

(please feel free to re-locate if I missed a design thread on the MkIV)
In the July 1967 Road & Track, Dennis Cipnic wrote the race report for the Sebring 12 Hours won by McLaren and Andretti in the Mark IV. He is quoted as saying, "...Ford took home all nine (points) with its big, yellow boxy thing."
I don't recall overall derision regarding its design. Am I wrong, or has time turned it into legendary status?

I have no clear information of Ford Mk4 now.
But I think there are 2 Ford Mk4s at Carrol Shelby museum.
And from 2003 Monterey Historic Automobile Races.
All machines were there !!

I just discovered this thread, revived after > 10 years - Steinbacher-hohl and I must have been milling around the MkIV corral next to each other at the 2003 Monterey Historics! I'm pretty sure the guy in the blue shirt with the backpack and the camera taking pictures at the fence is me!
I did a search and this was the best option for the following:

I don't recall reading negative negative comments on the design either, maybe next to the Ferrari sports cars it looked ugly. It might just be an appraisal unique to Dennis Cipnic. I suspect the slab-sided shape is why he described it as "boxy".

That is interesting. I had never seen a Mk IV in the flesh until the white one that was among the GT40s at Goodwood a couple of years ago. I was surprised, the Mk IV to my eyes was so small and delicate.
I had imagined a big beast, which it most definitely was not.
