I have been battling to recall the rider in front, Errol Cowan chasing hard though.

Hi,

I will not answer this but it is a great nostalgic shot of the classic bike racing in the colonies.

Pete

Yes, isn't it.  Roy Hesketh Easter '66, Keith Crawford with Errol Cowan in tow .

I think I know this one - anyone like to chip in?

Who is the other rider in the picture (besides Barnett). Is it Roger Hunter?

The first is a svelte like Martyn Ashwood.

It's not Roger Hunter in the second who was a bespectaled chunky sort of bloke.  I think it might be Brian Hunter who was one of Brian Coleshill's runners at that period.

I was going to say Malcolm Clark for the first one, but I think the crash helmet is wrong, I'm not sure it's Martyn Ashwood either.

It's Ashwood at Brands in the eighties with his pretty distictive style  - good view of his dial through the visor too.

Yep - Martyn Ashwood for sure!

Interestingly, I believe that this G50 was later owned by Len Haggis (renowned Gold Star restorer) who put it on the road!

Re. the second picture, I thought a "Hunter" rode for Kirby at one time, just wasn't sure of the surname! Most people I'm sure will remember that the Coleshill bikes that Brian Hunter rode were pretty unusual being 7R/G50 motors in Manx frames.

By the way Russ - have you got any emoticons?

.....and who later supplied the Seeley to Alan Barnett after he left Kirby; I seem to recall it being reported that Alan had upset Kirby big style by accepting the Coleshill deal just prior to the kick off of the 1970 season (brilliant pic on the Morton's site of Alan on Bray Hill on the Seeley).

Yes, Barry, emoticons all intact. :)

I just looked at the Morton's site after you said that. Yes, great picture - both wheels airborne, like so many shots taken at that spot ("thundering down Bray Hill" is the correct phrase I believe!).

All the colour shots on Mortons look very washed out (too light) when I view them. Is it the same at your end, or is it my monitor?

Yes Barry they are washed out on mine too, so deliberately done I would think?

Say Graham, don't think I have seen that new avatar of yours full size. Looks a good period shot - any chance we can see it in all its glory?

Not a shot I recall seeing before now - nice one I thought.  Glencrutchery Road warm up?  Found it at the other place and as they routinely nick ours......

The Surtees pic is likely to be from 1952.

From the left, Chandler, Degens, Butcher?, Cooper, Read, Hailwood, Agostini, behind Degens, Gould and over the left shoulder of the one I think is Butcher, Pickrell.  What do I win? :D

27 Tom Phillips? 18 - either Tom Dickie or Steve Spencer? And behind 27 could be Billie Nelson? Dan Shorey behind Cooper of course.

Smart 40, and Griff Jenkins' head poking above Gould's screen.  Definetly Steve Spencer with 18.

Cyril, I would pretty much bet my house on that bloke being Dan Shorey.  I think it's the the Race of the Year meeting '67.   Do you by chance have any other pics you would consider whacking up for us ?

Dear Experten,

Would someone please help me with Alan Shepherd's starting numbers in the 1961, 62 and 63 Senior TTs?

I'm also looking for the identity of starter 49 (Kirby 7R) in the Junior TT circa 1963, 64.

One more ... does anyone know if Malcolm Carling's still about and, if so, where he might be found?

Thanks.

Shepherd didn't ride the Senior in 1961, he was supposed to start with Hailwood but was DNS riding #4. Hailwood of course was #3 on the Manx.

Shepherd was #8 in 1963 riding a G50, started with #7 Read on the Gilera.

Sorry Bob, I edited it earlier to say, I have no idea what number Shep rode in 1962, only that he was a dnf after he crashed at Braddan Bridge on lap two.

Alan rode No2 in the 1962 Senior, however briefly!!

The Kirby 7R No 49 was in fact 1965, and the rider was Bill Ivy.

As a kid I can recall watching a little Castrol film of the '62 races, one that included Alan stepping off the G50 at Braddan.  Didn't he do a ton lap in this race when attempting to stay with the MVs ?

Hi Russ, Great shot of Hartle, Gilera followed by SMB on the MV (1963 Senior?) I am strangely drawn to the crowd behind and how many men are wearing jackets and ties.

Hi germanty, yes the Friday race.  In my view not an ideal place for Hartle to start ; i wonder how much thought went into these seeding arrangements ?   Yes, the old collar and tie was de rigueur ; not everything was better back in the day then, aye ;)

Yes Renn,  I have an inkling though that it's '67; his Manx in 66, his first year in Europe, was fitted was a very different, less modern looking, fairing.

After a typically gutsy ride, I can recall little Bill responding to congratulatations from someone in the Brands paddock with something along the lines of 'it's quick but weaves about all over the ****ing place'. 004411.jpg
