Yeah, why not, Barry.  Maybe it's making funny noises....  A well known late fifties pilot.

Non facebookers might appreciate this one:  Sadly, there's a seemingly authoritative report circulating on fb claiming Derek is now in a home suffering from dementia.  All very sad.  I should make clear that I posted this photo and included the first sentence before learning about Derek's situation. Apparently he's been in the place since July of last year.  Perhaps then this isn't news to some .

It is Hockenheim 'Sachs-Kurve' in '67 Russ. Was it the only season Peter Williams did a bit of 'Continental Circus' biz ?

Well done Renn, you spotted the diliberate mistake.  Ah, good qustion on Peter ; have to say I instinctively think he did more than the one year.  It seems youre right, Renn, which is surprising, erm you know what I mean.   I can recall a report in one of the comics around that time claiming Peter had wrItten to MV asking for a contract.

Although, here he is at Spa in '68.....

A shot taken at the Sachsenring '68? Is Ago faking a battle or is he lapping the lot? Re Peter Williams, I think I once read that he was supposed to support SMBH in the 500 cc class in '68 if Honda had continued. Possibly not only as a rider but more than an engineer to tame the beast

That would have been a good selection I rekon, with Alan Barnett included a year or two later ;)  Yes, '69 must be right.  He could have got away slowly, somehow though I rekon he's lapping them.

I would like to have one (title ' designed to race') , Russ, but I can find only e-book offers, the 'real' books are sold out. High on my list, together with Francis Beart's 'single purpose' memories...

Yes,i can confirm that unfortunately Derek is in a care home suffering with memory loss (dementia). The times i have visited him he seems perfectly happy and recognises me after a few minutes, but sadly his long term memory at the moment is not that good. It was his 82nd birthday a couple of weeks ago!!!!!!.

Two Wheel Worship....(worth watching just for the crisp sound of the thumper :-)

Mount Druitt! What a ripper! Is the rider really a young Leonard Teale?

Motorcycle safety film from 1959 called Two Wheel Worship which features Mt Druitt circuit in western Sydney from about 2.29 into the film.

Ah, fell at the first...  Who said time spent on fb can blunt your skills.  I dont' think I've ever seen one of Kirby's bikes looking so well used.   I doubt he would have allowed it out of the paddock at a home meeting.

Nice one, aye. This must be '64 when in addition to the factory Yam Readie rode Uncle Tom's bikes in GP's.  f  I wonder why ?  ....maybe to remind other factory bosses that he could also ride big bikes?

If that's Mike's 7R on the right - who's the one they are working on for I wonder? (Interestingly it has a twin-plug head!).

They're all Hailwood's, Barry.  At least two 7R's, probably a couple of Manxes too, or maybe even three, then the factory Hondas ....

Oh dear Terry, you should have removed the title on that one!!

Having said that, I knew Bob Mac and Smithy (slimline Smith!!!) anyway, but Sparrow Costain threw me.

Let's have lots more please!!!

Hi Larry, I'm Smithy's nephew, Rob Smith, I'm seriously trying to find racing info/any info on Graham but not a lot of luck. Why was he called slimline Smith? Any info U can give me would be highly appreciated. FYI: Graham died a few years ago "in a motorcycle accident" in Westbrooke, Natal, South Africa. Wasn't wearing a helmet, quick ride to village shop, tankslapper, over bars and bike went over his head. By the time my dad Ian and I got down to Entabeni Hospital, they were just keeping him alive, massively swollen head as you can imagine. Anyway, that's life....  Thanks for the bit of info you have already provided above, Kind regards, Rob Smith.

Brilliant shot, Oliman.  I've never seen this before, which is surprising given all the pieces that have been written on Derek over the years.  Currious non recation from the dudes on here, oh well.  Thanks to you and Mrs Minter, Olman.

Thanks Russell. Yes a nice picture, found whilst helping clear Dereks garage, the picture is dated August 1953 Brands Hatch so it may well be Dereks first race. I also wondered why the lack of response to my post, maybe people are on holiday.

A lot seem to have gone over to the dark side (Facebook) - but I'm still faithful to the forum :) !

Yep, great photo, and as Russell said - surprising that it has not been seen much before.

Response here! Just returned from riding my Beemer to Norway and back. I first saw Derek race at the very first motorcycle race on the Brands Hatch GP circuit, and I believe his first race back after his crash with Dave Downer six weeks earlier. I particularly supported him as like me he is a Man of Kent. I later joined the Army and spent time abroad but returned in time to see his later races on a Sealey, again always at Brands. He drove a Formula 4 racing car at the very first car racing at the then new Lydden Hill circuit. What a great shame he never got the works rides he deserved.

Another excellent shot, germanty.  Looks a bit like the Island but the hand painted numbers don't fit for what must be about '59.  Could it be Blanford?

I can confirm that Derek Minter did not come off the bike. He continued the race and won it. I was at this meeting watching from Clearways. Regarding the SMBH MV / Minter Gilera race I was also at this meeting and seem to remember that Mike broke his little finger in the accident and withdrew from the event. Those were the days when crowds of over 60,000 spectators used to get to Brands

Just found this link to Tom Armstrong (61-72)  at  http://www.armstrong...armstrong5.html

shows  some interesting views.

Placed it here as there was a reference to him.

Also found this video of BEMSEE first 50 years called "Fifty Not Out"

Uploaded on YouTube 25 Dec 2013 by Mark Dent (BMCRC).

https://www.youtube....h?v=rMkXEDbB5LA

Just played video again noticed this time there is a popup at the beginning saying "BMCRC copyright 2014". Did not notice first time I watched it. Had spoken with Eddie Bellars (BMCRC) on 6th August about photographers in passing  mentioned  link here, didn't seem a problem.

Period shots of the Drixyl framed bikes are rare in the extreme -  so low, compact and racy. I think this is Eddie Lenz, '68.

Hello Renn, yes Flugplatz Zeltweg with Karl on his G50 on the right.
